CHAPTER ELEVEN

"Progress demands sacrifice. But who decides what, or whom, must be sacrificed?"
— Unknown

The conference room was sterile, all white walls and glass screens, with a large circular table at its center. The chairs were filled by key members of the Genesis Project. Lisbeth sat near the head of the table, her fingers tapping absently against the surface, while Elena scrolled through a tablet filled with data. Krane was reviewing his own notes, an enigmatic smile playing on his lips. Other doctors, each leading a segment of the project, were present, waiting for the meeting to begin.

Krane cleared his throat and began. "Let's get started. Dr. Helena, I believe you're up first. How's the facility's general status?"

Dr. Helena, a tall woman with graying hair tied in a tight bun, adjusted her glasses and spoke. "The inhibitors continue to function at full capacity. We haven't had any breaches since Subject A-060 attempt two months ago. However, we did have some incidents with Lucas, Ariella, and Roselyn. All three are now confined to the detention area as a precaution."

Lisbeth shifted, her voice cool and clinical. "What were their offenses?"

Helena tapped her tablet. "Lucas was caught siphoning electricity from the main grid. If he had succeeded, he could have disrupted power across the facility. Ariella nearly set fire to an entire wing when she lost control of her pyrokinetic ability, and Roselyn... well, she was caught eavesdropping during a classified meeting. In her case, it was more curiosity than malice, but you know the rules."

Of course Krane knew what Roselyn did, she was eavesdropping from the conversation he had with Lisbeth and Elena last night.

Krane interjected, "We can’t afford any risks. Especially with the Genesis Project reaching a crucial stage."

Elena nodded in agreement. "Our subjects are progressing, but some are growing too confident in their abilities. We need to address that."

Helena continued, "We’ve graded the subjects based on their potential and growth. Group A subjects—those with physical enhancements or abilities directly linked to bodily strength or endurance—have shown significant progress. Subject A-001, Marcus, for example, has developed near-superhuman strength. Subject A-007, Evelyn, has enhanced speed and agility. Their abilities are straightforward and easy to manage."

Elena chimed in, "Group B subjects, who exhibit elemental control, are much more unpredictable. We've seen strong potential with subjects like Lucas and Ariella, but they're volatile. Lucas, or B-004, has shown significant control over electricity but is beginning to tap into nearby electrical sources. Ariella, B-002, has mastered fire manipulation but struggles with emotional control. We need better containment protocols for these two."

Lisbeth added, "And Group C—those with mental abilities—are the most dangerous. Roselyn, or C-003, is a prime example with her telekinesis. Then there's Subject C-008, Talia, who's just beginning to show signs of telepathy. We need to watch her carefully. Mental abilities like theirs can be difficult to predict, and the moment we lose control... well, we’ve all seen the damage they can do."

Dr. Marcus, head of the genetics department, leaned forward. "Which brings us to the genetic modification process. We're seeing solid results with the use of Serum KX, the substance Dr. Krane discovered. It's been highly effective in accelerating mutations, but we’re still running into complications with some subjects whose bodies are rejecting the modifications. Those in Group D, in particular, are showing slower progress, or none at all."

Elena frowned. "Yes, Group D subjects—those with minor or incomplete mutations—are proving difficult to manage. Subject D-005, Jason, for instance, has no control over his partial metamorphosis. His skin hardens sporadically but it’s unpredictable, and we still don’t know if it will develop further."

Lisbeth interjected, "We'll need to consider retagging some of the subjects. A few from Group D have begun showing potential abilities that place them closer to Group A or B. Jason, for example, could be reassigned to A once his physical enhancement stabilizes."

Helena nodded. "We also have a few others that don’t quite fit the mold. Take Subject E-001, Claire. Her abilities are... well, inconsistent. She displays both telekinetic and physical enhancements, but neither fully developed. She could be a hybrid, but we’re still unsure where to place her."

Lisbeth leaned forward. "Maybe it's time we consider a new classification group. Something for the outliers who don't fit neatly into any category. We can't afford to have individuals falling through the cracks."

Dr. Marcus added, "Agreed. We’re seeing more anomalies—subjects who display traits across multiple groups. We could create a Group X for hybrids and anomalies, allowing us to monitor their development without placing them into rigid categories."

Krane, who had been quietly listening, smiled. "Group X. I like that. It acknowledges that we don’t yet understand the full scope of what we're dealing with."

Helena added, "Speaking of anomalies, we'll also need to bring in new subjects. Our latest data indicates that individuals with higher genetic compatibility to the KX Serum are showing up in more remote populations. I propose we start expanding our search zones."

Dr. Reymond, the doctor responsible for scouting and recruitment, spoke up. "That brings us to the matter of genetic compatibility within certain family lines. We've noticed that some families exhibit extraordinary genetic predispositions toward compatibility with the KX Serum. The Rossi-Smiths are a prime example. Kendall, as you know, was taken because of her family's exceptional genetic history. We're also closely monitoring Maya Rossi-Smith, who is showing even stronger markers. It's only a matter of time before we bring her into the project."

Lisbeth raised an eyebrow. "So we’re dealing with entire family lines now?"

Reymond nodded. "In some cases, yes. We’ve seen similar results with other family groups. The potential for hereditary traits is becoming increasingly clear. It’s why subjects like Kendall are in Group X—her abilities are unpredictable, but there’s something more there."

As Dr. Reymond discussed the Rossi-smiths' remarkable genetic lineage, Krane's mind drifted, though outwardly he remained composed. His eyes grew distant for a moment, memories flickering in the depths.

The Rossi-smiths — one of the most genetically gifted families they'd ever encountered — were indeed extraordinary, but his thoughts lingered on Clara Rossi-Smith, the one who got away. Clara had once been his colleague, a brilliant mind in genetic sciences, with a family history steeped in cutting edge research. Her departure from the genesis project still gnawed on him. She was a brilliant geneticist whose work had laid the foundation for much of the Genesis Project. She had been pivotal in the early stages of their genetic experimentation, but when the lines between scientific discovery and ethical boundaries blurred, Clara walked away. Krane never did. He had the vision. She was the one who had walked away from it all, leaving both the project and Krane behind.

He could still recall the countless nights in the lab, their hands stained with ink and chemicals as they poured over genetic codes and experimental results. Clara's insights into gene editing and manipulation were unparalleled. Together, they had dreamed of pushing the boundaries of human potential. Well that's what he had thought, Clara however was short sighted — she couldn't see the bigger picture.

She was the one that had begun to question the ethical implications of their work. She grew concerned about the consequences, the morality of altering human genetics on such a fundamental level. Krane had tried to persuade her, to show her the possibilities, but her conscience wouldn't allow it. In the end, she chose to leave, abandoning the project—and him.

A flicker of something—was it regret?—passed over Krane's face before he masked it. The sting of her departure hadn't lessened over the years. If anything, it fueled his determination.

He still remembered the last words she said to him her eyes filled with a mix of disappointment and sadness."You're playing with forces we don't fully understand Viktor, I won't be a part of this anymore."

That conversation haunted him not just because of her words, but because of the emotions he had never expressed to her. Despite everything, he still cared for her. He resented her too, because she had betrayed him by leaving. It wasn't his fault she was so short-sighted. And now her children — Kendall and soon Maya — were under his control. It was an ironic twist of fate that brought him some satisfaction. The Rossi-smiths genes were too important to the project for them to slip away.

As he refocused on the conversation, Lisbeth was speaking again.

"The Rossi-smiths aren't the only family we've been tracking. We've identified a few others with strong genetic potential."

Dr. Reymond nodded. "Yes, the Brenners and the Takahashi's are prime examples. The Brenners have shown extraordinary resilience, with one subject already In Group A showing accelerated healing abilities. As for the Takahashis they have displayed high compatibility with the KX serum, resulting in enhanced reflexes and sensory perception. We've already tagged two of their children as potential subjects."

Krane's interest piqued. "Are the Takahashis already enrolled in the program?"

Reymond checked his tablet. "Not yet, but they're being monitored. We expect them to join within the next six months."

Elena leaned in. "It's incredible how certain family lines consistently produce subjects with high genetic potential . We should focus more resources on identifying these families early — before they're aware of their potential. Clara may have left us but we have her family, we can't let any other valuable families slip through cracks."

Krane's jaw tightened at the mention of Clara again, though he masked it with a casual response. "Clara's departure was unfortunate. But her genes are still here, through Kendall, and soon, Maya. In the end, the project will continue. Nothing can stop what we're building here."

He blinked, twice. "And yes, of course. Maya Rossi-Smith. Keep me updated on her status. If her genetic potential is as significant as we believe, she may warrant special attention."

Lisbeth smirked, as if sensing krane's lingering feelings. "Still not over her, Victor?"

He shot her a sharp look, and Lisbeth backed off, though her smirk remained. She enjoyed pushing his buttons. Elena glanced between Krane and Lisbeth noting the tension before she steered the conversation back to the progress report.

"As I was saying", Elena began "we should keep eyes on the Montgomerys as well. Their lineage has shown some unique traits—psychic abilities similar to Group C subjects. One of their youngest Jasper Montgomery is already showing signs of telepathy."

Helena added, "These families are key to ensuring the future of this project. The more we understand about the genetic factors at play, The more we understand about the genetic factors at play, the better we refine the KX Serum. We need these exceptional subjects.
Krane nodded, his mind briefly returning to Clara. If only she could see the progress they had made — how her family's work had laid the foundation for something greater they had ever imagined. But she was gone, and now, he would continue the work without her, ensuring that her legacy, whether she liked it or not, was part of the Genesis project's success.

The conversation continued as they discussed other important families and potential recruits. Each name was a puzzle piece in the grand design of the Genesis project — a design Krane was determined to see through the end, no matter the cost.

Elena spoke again looking at her tablet. "Are there other families we should be considering?"

Dr. Reymond nodded. "Yes, actually. The Andersons and the Chens have shown promising genetic markers. The Andersons have a history of heightened cognitive abilities—several members are prodigies in their fields. The Chen family exhibits rare genetic mutations that could be beneficial for our Group B and C categories."

He continued. "Recently we captured one of the Andersons. We've started working on her. With her family's genetic markers, she's promising."

"Good". Krane nodded.

Lisbeth added, "We should proceed cautiously. Drawing too much attention to these families could raise suspicions. Discreet acquisition is paramount."

Krane interjected, his tone firm. "Agreed. We can't afford any missteps. As for Maya, we need to ensure her transition into the project is seamless. Given her mother's... sensitivities, we must handle the situation delicately."

He paused, his gaze drifting momentarily. "Clara was always protective of her family. But sometimes, sacrifices must be made for the greater good."

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Do you think Clara suspects anything about Kendall's disappearance?"

Krane's lips curled into a faint smile. "If she does, she hasn't acted on it. Besides that has been two years now. Clara may have left the project, but she knows better than to interfere. Besides, we have measures in place should she become... problematic."

"I was just asking you know... because of the breach that day." Elena said as she looked at Krane again.

Right someone had tried to access Kendall's files but whatever they were searching for a needle in a haystack.

A silence settled over the room, the weight of unspoken threats hanging in the air.

Dr. Marcus cleared his throat, steering the conversation back. "Regarding the genetic advancements, perhaps we should consider integrating Clara's earlier research. Her work on gene expression could enhance the efficacy of the KX Serum."

Krane's eyes hardened. "We're already utilizing the best of her contributions. There's no need to revisit old ground."

Lisbeth sensed the tension and swiftly changed the subject. "What about the classification of new subjects? With families like the Andersons and Chens, we might need to reassess our grouping criteria."

Dr. Helena agreed. "Indeed. If we're seeing unique abilities emerge, especially those that don't fit neatly into Groups A through F or even Group X, perhaps we need a new classification."

Elena suggested, "We could expand on the concept of Group Z, reserved for the most exceptional and potentially dangerous subjects. If Maya or others exhibit abilities beyond our current scope, they would be placed there.

"Lisbeth concurred, "It might be worth thinking about a classification beyond Group X. If Maya’s potential outstrips even our strongest subjects, she could be one of the few placed in Group Z—a category for the most dangerous, volatile individuals. But we’ll wait to see if her genes are as exceptional as they seem."

Krane nodded thoughtfully. "Yes, Group Z. It will be reserved for subjects of unparalleled potential—those who could be instrumental in achieving the ultimate goals of the Genesis Project."

He glanced around the table. "Ensure that all scouting and acquisition efforts are conducted with the utmost discretion. We cannot afford exposure. Remember, our work here is vital for the future of humanity."

The doctors murmured their agreement.

Dr. Reymond hesitated before speaking again. "One more point. We've observed that subjects from these exceptional families sometimes exhibit resistance to the KX Serum's side effects. This could be invaluable in stabilizing the serum for broader application."

Krane's interest piqued. "Resistance, you say? That could be the breakthrough we've been seeking. Focus your efforts on studying these subjects closely."

Helena, seemingly unfazed, moved the conversation forward. "How are we going to handle the fact that some subjects, like Ariella and Lucas, are already developing beyond our expectations? If they keep growing at this pace, we won’t have the infrastructure to control them."

Krane leaned back, fingers steepled. "That's why we’re expanding the facility. New containment units are being designed to suppress their abilities if necessary. Plus, we’ll need more personnel—trained specialists who can handle these subjects once they reach their full potential."

Lisbeth leaned forward. "We also need to accelerate the development of "Project Apex". It’s the next logical step—taking the best of what we’ve learned here and applying it to more controllable, reliable subjects."

Elena shot her a sharp look. "More controllable? You mean subjects that don’t think for themselves?"

Lisbeth’s smile was cold. "Precisely."

Krane rose from his seat, signaling the end of the meeting. "We’ve made tremendous strides, but we need to stay ahead. The world outside has no idea what’s coming. Once the Genesis Project reaches full maturity, nothing will stand in our way."

As the doctors began to gather their things, Helena spoke up one last time. "We should also consider the other groups. We’ve allocated Group A to physical abilities, B to elemental, C to mental abilities, D to minor mutations, E to experimental subjects, F to the least promising, and X for hybrids or anomalies. But with the addition of Group Z, we’ll be able to categorize the most dangerous individuals properly."

Krane smiled darkly. "We’ll deal with them when the time comes. For now, let's focus on perfecting the groups we already have. And remember, we're not just shaping individuals. We're creating something far greater—a new genesis."

As the meeting drew to a close, Krane lingered, his thoughts returning to Clara. Despite everything, a part of him missed their collaboration—the synergy they once shared. But emotions were a distraction. The Genesis Project demanded his full attention.

The meeting ended, the weight of their decisions hanging in the air as they left the room one by one.

He whispered under his breath, almost imperceptibly, "You can't stop progress, Clara."

Well that was if nothing went wrong.
