Chapter 2
I woke up in my room, alone thankfully, and then I noticed the pain. Indescribable pain that ravaged along the entirety of my arms, back, sides, chest, everywhere really, and I involuntarily let out a hiss of pain.
Either someone heard me or they were just coming in to check on me or something, but a soldier suddenly came into the room and stopped, looking at me with surprise. What in the world could they possibly be surprised about? It wasn't like I had changed or anything. I lifted up my shirt as they left and yelled down the hall for someone to run and get the commander. I gasped as I saw them, all one hundred bite marks, only around forty-eight of them lined my sides, going halfway down my chest, and more than likely halfway across my back as well. I pulled up my sleeves to see the same thing, but it didn't look like bite marks as much as it did dots all the way up, down, and around my arms.
I sat up and checked my back with my hands to find out that they didn't even bother trying to patch me up and the scabs were jagged reminders of what a whip does to the skin. I heard the door open once again and the same commander I saw last time stepped into the room. I tried to leap off of the bed to get into a salute, but the second my feet touched the carpet I crumpled to the ground.
The commander sighed and came over, picked me up, and set me on the bed. Set me on the bed.
What?!
I couldn't speak, I couldn't think, why wasn't he rough with me? Why, well how was I even alive still? I felt an unsettling feeling in my stomach, but I just brushed it away, it wasn't as bad as the pain from my other wounds. I looked at the commander in shock and slight fear, I didn't understand what I did to deserve such nice treatment.
"So you're probably wondering why I am treating you better now?" he said and I just continued to stare at him, shocked. "I was wrong about you, you're much stronger than I realized. You're probably stronger than most of the other Furs from what I've seen, and I am going to start to give you a chance. If you screw this up you are done, and I will kill you myself, understand."
I nodded and tried to speak, but I couldn't for some reason, I touched my neck gingerly and found a bandage around it. I tried to take it off to feel what was underneath the bandage and regretted it immediately. It instantly felt like my neck was being ripped apart by talons. I looked at him for an explanation, and found him looking at my neck grimly.
"The four that I let torture you went a little further than instructed" he said and I gaped at him, and tried to speak again, but remembered that I physically couldn't. I gripped my neck lightly and looked at him cautiously. He walked to the foot of the bed and looked out the window, not able to look at me for some reason.
"No, the damage that they did is permanent" he said and everything flushed into the darkness of despair. I looked out the ceiling in despair, a tear escaping my eyes before I have the chance to even try to hold them back. I heard the door and I knew that the commander was about to leave.
"I am going to be putting you back into training with the others in three weeks" he said, and then added, "this way the others won't be able to use an excuse to beat you as severely. Use this time to recover, but don't fall behind."
And with that he stepped out of the room, and I was swallowed in my sorrows, thinking about the thing that I had neglected to use for eighteen years of my life. I would never speak again.
------------------------------------
The next three weeks went by fast: my injuries were healing faster than they should've as a regular human, but I dismissed it as a part of their advanced technologies, the commander dropped by about once a week, I was made to get out of bed every day twice a day to keep my muscles strong and used, and by the time I was able to walk out of the Fur hospital on my own, all I saw were the pity or horror filled faces of the Furs that I passed as they saw my injuries.
I was flanked by two Fur soldiers, the same ones that always stood outside my door, as even the commander knew that someone would be able to get in and try to kill me in my vulnerable state. I was 'brought', more like escorted, to my cot to pack up my things and then I was brought to an actual cabin, an empty one surprisingly. I didn't even know that the Fur Army even any empty cabins, I always thought that they were always kept filled with new recruits.
I took this opportunity to take a warm shower, being careful of my still healing scars, and making sure that my back was healing properly. I got out of the bathroom dressed and ready to see a female black, grey, and white Panther Fur staring at me with wide eyes and a bag in her hands. Then another female walked in, a Purple and Black Wolf Fur with a cold stare, one that slightly, only slightly held surprise in it when she saw me. Then two Blue, white, husky Furs with different tail tips walked in, the left one had a red tipped white tail, and the left one had a black tipped white tail.
They both dropped their bags and pulled guns on me, and I just looked at them bored, obviously twins, their eyes even matched, Sky blue, and I didn't really care about dying at the moment. I just walked up to them, brushing past the female Purple and black Wolf Fur in the process and standing in-front of their guns with a dare. Shoot me, I dare you. My life means nothing anymore.
We stayed that way, even after the commander walked in and I looked up at him and then turned away as his eyes told me to back off, and not aggravate the Furs here. I guessed that he had a lot worse news to tell them other than just the fact that I was living with the four of them, and apparently he did. I noticed the female Purple and Black Fur looking at me with an expression of intrigue. Something that immediately disappeared as the commander told us all the news.
"As you can tell, there is a human here with you" he said motioning to me, making everyone look at me once again, "this team is something that takes orders directly from the higher ups, and all of you are a part of it, which means that you'll train together, live and eat together, fight together, and I expect each of you to know the others well by the time our training is done."
The two huskies went absolutely insane at this, apparently they were fine working with a cat and a wolf Fur, but not with a human.
"Sir, permission to speak freely?" the Red tipped one asked and the commander nodded letting out a small growl of annoyance.
"Okay. What in the Great Fur World are you thinking? We can't work with a human, especially not one of his...stature" the Red tipped one yelled, and the commander shut him up with a glare. The female Panther Fur raised her hand for attention and agreed.
"I agree, why are we working with a human? He looks like he's been through a meat grinder" she asked, and it seemed a little bit nicer, but maybe that was my mind just playing tricks on me.
I also looked at the commander wondering why I was in a special divisions unit, and what I could possibly do to match them. They were all seasoned soldiers, I wouldn't even be able to match a tenth of what they could do, and the commander himself knew that, but seemed to not care.
"Well this human is stronger than he looks, all of the bite marks, scars, and the determination in his eyes should tell you all something about how hard he works" the commander made the all look at me...again, "and hopefully you will grow to understand him, as he is unable to speak anymore due to unfortunate circumstances. He'll share that with you when the time comes."
I grabbed my bag from the bottom bunk and moved it to the top of the one I was at, which was surprisingly still across from the female Panther Fur's bunk. She hadn't moved, in fact she and the Purple and Black Wolf Fur seemed even more interested in me.
"I expect everyone here to know each other's names by the end of this week" the commander said and I internally growled at him, of course he would do that, but at least he didn't say that we had to do something together as a team just yet, "one last thing, there is going to be another addition to this team, but you won't meet him until the day of your first mission."
At that the commander left us and I looked at the door for a second before turning to my bed and unpacking the little amount of things that I had on top of it and then putting the blanket over the top, and my second blanket over that one, and then dropping my empty bag at the top to serve as a pillow. Then I climbed in and closed my eyes, it was midday, but I didn't plan on staying up and 'hanging out' with these four Furs that I didn't even know.
---------------------------------
When I woke up the four Furs were still sleeping, I tried to climb down the ladder from the top bunk as quietly as I could, skipping the last three steps down and immediately regretted it. All of my wounds didn't like the impact with the ground and I crumbled to the floor. Gritting my teeth and hissing in pain, and it stayed flaring for a good three minutes. Once it stopped I lay there, on my back, fighting to steady my breathing, the pressure in my chest had increased slightly since three weeks ago.
I got onto my hands and knees, and then to my feet and I walked to the back of the cabin, where the others wouldn't be able to hear me strain...hopefully. I did as much as I could for push ups, sit ups, pull ups on the bar above the door, planks, and any other thing that I thought of. I was just getting into the bathroom as the female Purple and Black Wolf Fur was getting dressed.
I looked at my watch just as I got out of my shower and saw that I still had about another hour before an early awakening would be set to happen, as is normal for any new recruit or routine change. I stepped out of the bathroom to see the female Purple and Black Wolf Fur standing in-front of the bathroom door with a towel in her hands. I looked at her, she met my eyes with her forest green ones, and I turned away and sat on the bottom bunk waiting till five-hundred hours to hit.
I noticed as I waited that the brother huskies were slight snorers and the female Panther Fur moved and moaned a lot in her sleep. The commander walked in at exactly a minute before five and looked around to see me and the female Purple and Black Wolf Fur were the only ones awake. I may have imagined it but I swear I saw him smirk at me just before he drew out a whistle and blew his lungs into it.
"GET UP YOU SLEEPING LOGS!! I EXPECT YOU DRESSED AND OUTSIDE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES!!" he then opened the door, stepped out, and me and the female Purple and Black Wolf Fur stepped out with him, walking past the three other Furs that were cursing and running around to get ready.
