Patton had been jumping through figurative hoops in an attempt to get to know all of his classmates. They had all been together for the better part of four years at the least and he figured it couldn't be too difficult. He was the class president, after all; he had a responsibility to make everyone feel like they were heard!
This year he hadn't anticipated any type of change- that is until a new kid arrived. They hadn't had a new student in their graduating class since they had all started high school. No, they had just been the same group of 237 students and now this anxious little bean of a student sitting in front of Patton made that class size go up to 238.
The thing that really was weird to Patton was that even though there was undeniably a new student, he hadn't been given prior warning. As the class president, it was his responsibility to make sure the new kid would be able to stand on his own by the end of the week, but Patton didn't even know what classes he was supposed to be attending!
"You honestly don't have to worry about me." Came a quiet mumbling from underneath the black hood, a slight shifting in the bangs that were sticking out the only real indication that the new kid- Vincent? Virgil?- had actually moved.
Well, Patton could not have that! "No, kiddo, I just have to get some things together really quick!" He paused, looking back and forth quickly, as he tried to register everything he had and what he was still missing, "Okay, okay, okay! I just uh... stay here for one second!"
Rushing about, he gathered a few print outs then he went behind the secretary desk and printed out a couple more pieces of paper before looking up, "Virgil, right?"
"Yeah."
"What's your last name, kiddo?"
"Do you really need to know that?"
"How else am I supposed to get your schedule for you?"
There was an inaudible grumble from the hunched over boy, after being asked to repeat Birgil exhaled heavily before speaking up a little louder, "Himura."
"Himura?" Patton blinked and looked up at the other boy.
"I'm part Japanese, I know, I don't look it!" Virgil was quick to start defending himself, but Patton cut him off.
"I... was actually going to ask you how to spell that..?"
"Oh! I- uh.... H-I-M-U-R-A." He rambled off, his shoulders inching higher as his gaze met the floor.
After all the paperwork was printed, Patton handed Virgil everything and explained that Virgil could look at it all whenever he was ready, but the schedule was the most important thing to focus on for the time being. Patton began leading Virgil through the day telling the other that he'd meet him at the end of every class and lead him to the next for the day.
It didn't take much for Patton to treat anyone (everyone) as though they were an old friend, but Patton's mild insecurities were constantly playing at the forefront of his mind. Especially after knowing that this incident with Virgil wasn't the first time that the school staff had failed to communicate with the student council about something important. So keeping it silent, Patton had kept everything bright and cheery every time he saw Virgil throughout the morning.
As lunch break came, Patton greeted the new student in his usually bright manner only for Virgil to ask if they could talk in private. A quick agreement had Patton lead Virgil to the student council room and invite him to take a seat while dropping his bagged lunch onto the table- before Virgil sat on the table beside the brown paper bag.
"The school staff here sucks. They actually don't want to communicate with the council because they think the student council is a nuisance." Virgil blurted out suddenly, his fingers curling into the surface of the desk in a tight grip.
That was surprising, "What... do you mean?"
"The principal thinks the council is annoying, the vice principal doesn't understand why the valedictorian gave up the president position when he's such an 'outstanding' student, and the secretary is literally looking into job opportunities because she thinks the students here are nothing more than nuisances." Virgil listed off, his eyes closing as though he was overwhelmed with all of the information.
"How do you know all of this?" Patton did his best to keep his voice steady, but his brows were clearly furrowed in confusion.
Virgil, on the other hand looked conflicted. A moment of silence steadied the room until his soft voice came out once more, "I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but I can trust you... right?"
His was a voice that carried a burden that seemed well beyond his years all of a sudden, and it struck a chord deep inside Patton. He didn't understand it- then again, he didn't understand Logan most of the time either- but it made him reach out a gently place a hand on Virgil's arm, just barely resting on the surface. "I would never hurt you, Virgil, not knowingly."
Virgil gave a slight smile at the other and then blinked a few times. It was instantaneous, the new student's brown eyes took on a swirled appearance as a myriad of purples, blues, and pinks danced in his eyes where the blue once was. "I hope so, because my secret is more than most mortals can handle."
