Logan let out a soft huff as he looked over the study guide he had been provided by his tutor. Ever since the threat on his life he had been relegated to studying from home and his tutor couldn't seem to grasp the concept of an accelerated course. Half of the material on the guide he had been delegated was information he had reviewed no later than the year prior.
Shaking his head, Logan placed his books in a small pile before standing and making his way out of the room and down the stairs. He had gotten his morning work started, so it was time for a meal break. Gathering enough food that had a decent amount of sustenance, he sat at the kitchen island and dug into his meal.
After finishing his fruits, he was startled out of his seat as there was a crash followed by the glass of water in front of him shattering into bits. Dropping the bit of toast he held in his fingers, Logan threw himself onto the floor- hands covering his head as he curled into a ball. He laid still, listening for any further shots or movement coming through the newly opened window; he debated on the benefits of moving because at present he had his vitals covered- but a bullet would rip through what little protection he was providing himself. Lifting his head slightly, he glanced around until his eyes landed on the landline.
Mere moments later, he had crawled across the floor and yanked the cord on the charging base, knocking the phone off the hook and to the floor. The sound causing another flurry of bullets to come through the window. Curling low against the nearest cabinet, he shakily dialed the emergency services number and pressed the phone to his ear. The instant the phone was answered he relayed the current situation in hushed whispers, shuddering as a happy trigger finger shattered the plate and bowl he had been eating from just minutes prior.
Time seemed to stretch out in excess, seconds felt like minutes, and he was stuck shaking against the cabinets until he heard the sirens barreling down the street- safety. Tears he hadn't been aware of repressing finally slid down his cheeks and he pressed a hand to his mouth to suppress the soft sobs that made their way up his throat. Minutes later he heard the hollers of clear before an officer found his way to Logan and gently coerced him up. The coast was clear, and he was safe once again.
That evening, Logan found himself sitting with his parents in the lounge, back straight, but his gaze locked on the ground; the slight shaking in his movements the only real indication that the events of that morning still had him reeling. His high-strung emotions leaving little hope that he would be able to comfortably make it through the upcoming conversation. So he kept silent and nodded as his parent laid before him the new plan.
Security detail. His parents had reached out to a trusted company and signed a contract with them to allow Logan his own security detail. His parents were already covered due to the nature of their jobs, but since he was just a univeristy student, they were going to make sure he was safe.
Within an hour, there was a gentleman at the door, his bright demeanor fairly off-putting, but Logan knew better than to let instantaneous opinions weigh anchor on his final judgment of a person. Leading the way back upstairs, he spoke with his new security guard for a few moments before the other man pulled out a phone and dialed a number before putting it on speaker.
"Hey Storm, Royalty, you guys there?" He said quickly, his cheery demeanor fading into one of utter seriousness.
"Affirmative."
"Forever and always!"
"Great! Logan, Storm, Royalty, and myself-"
"Empathy!" Came a shout from the phone.
"Yes, Empathy, thank you Royalty- are your security detail. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe."
"And kill the bad guys!" Royalty exclaimed through the device.
"Correction, without killing anyone; imprisoning first and foremost if it comes to it." Storm's low voice corrected.
Logan was a little confused, "Why are there three of you...?"
"Well, I'm here to keep you safe from immediate threats and to keep you calm!" Empathy spoke first, giving a reassuring smile.
Royalty interjected next, "I am the muscle and sharp shooter. My task is to keep everyone at bay when Empathy is otherwise occupied!"
There was a soft sigh before Storm spoke up, "I'm the everything guy. I keep an eye on the cameras, but I can jump into a fray when necessary. We keep each other as well as our ward safe."
Now it was Logan's turn to groan, "I don't see how this is going to work out, you lot seem to have a lot of basic knowledge, and possibly you even make a good team. But this is just... it's weird. You lot realize the most interesting thing I do in a day is switch from studying mathematics to studying physics, right?"
"Well, maybe we can fix that for you!" Empathy interjected, smiling brightly, "In the mean time you need a nickname so that no one knows who we are referencing!"
"The Brain." Storm suddenly spoke up, Logan had nearly forgotten about the other two security members being on the device until then.
"I'm sorry, what?"
Empathy let out a soft squeal st the name though, "It's so cute! It's perfect! Okay, Logie, you are now 'The Brain,' okay?"
"I would prefer if you called me Logan instead of Logie, and if 'The Brain' makes you all feel more comfortable, I can accept that, I suppose."
"Well, Brain, if you keep up this amount of positivity you'll have Storm fighting to keep his top position." Royalty sassed.
Logan let out an affronted sound as Storm hollered, "I'm realistic, Princey!"
"Princey?" Logan was quick to question, curiosity getting the better of him as Empathy shot him a quick smirk.
"Storm struggles with keeping his cool around Royalty." He explained to the college student, fighting back a chuckle, "I guess you could say he even gets a little extra passionate where Royalty is involved."
"Empathy bite your tongue or I will install cameras in your house that you will never find."
"Wait, Empathy, are you implying something?" Royalty was quick to jump in.
"It's getting late- we should man our stations! Royalty you take first watch!" Storm shouted into the receiver before disconnecting the line.
Emotions are a fickle thing; but without them, Logan doubted he would feel half as safe with this trio.
