The Sorting Ceremony

When the boats came to shore all of the first years walked up the large stone steps to the castle. The massive door was already open. They filed into a large room and squeezed closer than preferred. The room was filled with whispers of the Sorting and what house they'd be in. Finally, a woman with a stern face, hair pulled back in a tight bun and had rectangular spectacles led them in a straight line, into another room. The massive room had five tables. One for each house and one for the professors and staff. They were led up to the stage. All eyes were on them. Above them looked like an open sly and the room was lit with thousands of candles. The woman started talking but few of the first years were paying attention. They were too busy looking around. Next to the line was a stool with a very old wizard hat. When the woman stopped talking a tear near the brim of the hat opened like a mouth.

It broke out into song. All of the first years' jaws dropped. When it finished, the woman started reading names off a list. When she called on them they sat on the stool and put the Sorting Hat on. The times differed from person to person, but it always shouted one of the houses. Serena was one of the first people and definitely one of the most nervous.

She slowly walked to the stool and sat down. The Sorting Hat was placed on her head and very quickly shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Her face lit up as the Gryffindor table cheered. She ran and sat down. A few more people went, then Renae's name was called. She looked like she did this everyday. She sat down and was declared Gryffindor, just like she said. Serena patted her back as they sat beside each other. Shortly after Jane's name was called. Her palms were sweating. She walked fast and sat down eagerly. The hat fell on her head.

"Oh, my. Definitely GRYFFINDOR!" said the Sorting Hat. Everything but the last word was only said in Jane's head. She took off the Hat proudly and strutted to the Gryffindor table. Many others were called and sorted. Finally, Pepper was up. She was visibly shaking. She sat down and grabbed the edges of the stool. The Sorting Hat was on head the longest. After five minutes of silence the Sorting Hat finally shouted "GRYFFINDOR!" Jane, Renae, and Serena cheered the loudest. They all were together. They couldn't have been happier.
