(Ghafir:60)
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
[40:60]
There are some verses in the Qur'an that simply make our hearts melt... and this is one of them.
It's so touching that Allah actually doesn't give us an option, rather He commands us to call on Him.
We know that the Qur'an is from Allah anyway, yet to personalise this message He tells 'And Your Lord says...'
Would it be a call that is ignored or missed? Not even close! A response is guaranteed.
One of the very most beautiful thing in this verse is that Allah didn't specify- 'O pious one' or anything like that, this is motivation for us all, its a general address; no matter what mistakes we make, no matter how much we sin- we still have Him to turn to.
And who is He? He's The Lord of the 7 heavens and the earth! Literally, the King of all Kings. But He's a King in where no appointment needs to be made before talking to Him. He is available for us to talk to 24/7.
Any place we find ourself in, any situation where we apparently have no one to our aid, we simply need to raise our hands and make Dua' to him.
Sometimes when we ask people a favour, they maybe willing to do it for us once or twice. But when we keep going to them for everything, ultimately they'll get annoyed. But with Allah? He invites us to keep calling in him! In fact He dislikes it when we don't ask from him, such is His mercy and compassion.
He wants to hear our voice, in difficulty and in good times. Even for the smallest of things, we need to turn to Him.
And at the same time we should never ever make duas half heartedly. Like saying
'O Allah if you wish please give me that car'
This is wrong in so many levels! The fact of the matter is that; we must be certain in the duas we make to Him. Who is He? The One who created us, nourished us with food, placed us on the earth. Whatever He wishes to do He just says 'be' and it becomes. This is His power. This is Allah; The Lord of the worlds.
"Verily your Lord is Generous and Shy. If His servant raises his hands to Him (in supplication) He becomes shy to return them empty."
And then the other extreme could occur. Days may pass and we may not see the outcome of our duas, and we give up hope. Sometimes the things we want and ask for, are not good for us, and who knows us better than we do? Allah does! And He will definitely respond in a way that is good for us.
This also doesn't mean that we make unrealistic duas like: touching the sun. It contradicts the law Allah has set. Because literally can we ever go close to the sun? Though if we really want anything similar to that, remember that in Jannah everything is limitless.
Abu Sa'eed Khudri (Ra) reports that Rasulullah (Sal) said: "Whichever Muslim makes duaa to Allah and supplicates to Him, and his duaa does not contain any sin (i.e. asking for anything which is impermissible) or the severance of family ties, Allah will grant him one of three things. Either He will grant him what he had asked for (in this world), or He will keep the reward of the duaa for him in the Akhirah, or He will avert a calamity from him." The Sahaabah (Ra) said: "In that case, we will engage in abundant duaa."Rasulullah (Sal) replied: "Allah is more than everything (i.e. His power and treasures are more than what you ask for).
As seen from the hadith above, the Sahabas were inclined to ask more because of that, because ultimately it's going to be a win-win. If we make dua, we lose nothing.
Allah loves it when we call unto Him, and He even rewards us for this act which isn't hard to do at all. Despite being the King, we don't need to speak to him through an intermediary- the contact is direct.
And even when the whole world is blind to our pain, He knows it. He knows of every tear we shed, so we shouldn't ever hesitate in asking Him for anything, because there's nothing He cannot do.
Sometimes for a speech we prepare the introduction, the main and then the conclusion. We structure it to make it better, and the same can be done with duas too.
Before making the actual Dua itself;
- Praise Allah a lot
- Send Salawath to the Prophet(sal)
- Ask for forgiveness of sins
- Make the dua
- Use Allah's names that would go with the dua. For instance if asking for forgiveness, we can use Al-Ghafoor(The Most Forgiving). If we're not sure on what name to use, then we should generally call 'Ya Rabb' it means 'O Lord.'
Then as conclusion, wrap it up with Praises to Allah again.
After making the dua we shouldn't count down the days to see how long it has taken, rather we should be patient and continuously keep making Dua'.
We're never under qualified to call on Him, the opportunity is there for the one who wants to avail it.
