Chapter 1
"Hey Spark, wake up," a familiar, gentle voice whispered in my ear.
"Huh, uh, wha?" I asked, my vision blurred from sleep. The fuzzy shades of gray, blue, brown, and yellow were taking the form of my 'Gemini' sister, Aqua, hovering a few feet from my face, dripping a constant supply of conjured water from her finger on to my face, burning it like acid. With one flick of my wrist, I flung the water droplets off of myself, watching them glimmer in the morning light before they splattered onto the dull, grey cave floor.
I sat up, inhaling the cool, damp morning air. I stood, stretching the tense muscles until they felt like exploding.
"Your shift, Spark"Aqua mumbled before slumping to the ground, allowing the barrier of water engulfing the entrance to fall. Only a few moments passed until I heard an aggravated voice arise, screaming and cursing about how this suit was brand new. Turning towards Aqua, I burst out laughing. She always made sure to delicately place the water where it wouldn't hurt or annoy people, but rarely did she let it drop, especially on random passersby.
Calming myself, I stalked past Aqua to the right end of the cave where we kept some fire wood. Before I bent down to pick up a couple of logs, it donned on me that I forgot to lay up the barrier. Raising my right arm, I conjured a wall of electricity at the entrance of the cave. After having that task taken care of, I leaned over the scarce pile of logs and picked up the driest one, practically feeling how well it would burn.
I crept back to where Aqua lay, breath slow, shivers shaking her whole body. Laying my hand atop the stack, I ignited it, flames swallowing the logs and spitting out bits of ashes.
Looking out to the horizon, I watched the copious city awake, faint morning light dappling the shadows where the vibrant auras couldn't reach. Loneliness crept upon me, and I felt that singing would banish it. Half way through the third verse, I stopped abruptly when I felt a hand slap my back."Shut up," Aqua murmured still asleep, and I laughed hysterically for a bit. Aqua hated when I sang, for I had an elegant and charming voice, and she had one of a walrus being run over.
A flash of crimson caught my eye as I turned towards the barrier. A cardinal was flying near, and, impossibly, passed through, not flinching, nor falling to the ground electrocuted. I outstretched my finger, creating a perch for the peculiar bird to land on. I watched as it preened its feathers, until I noticed it tugging at a jaggedly-ripped piece of paper tied to its foot. I undid the small knot that attached the note to the bird, and sent him off as I glanced down a the scrawl on the message.
Kristen and Laura,
Please come back, and don't fight
my fellow colleges. We're only trying
to advance the world, and your genes
can help us. Please don't put up a fight,
when they find you, but don't forget I
warned you.
Yours truly,
Jake P. Summers.
I scowled at the paper in my hands before I ignited it and reduced it to a pile of ashes that I spat on, kicked around, tried to burn some more, and zapped a couple more times for good measure. Don't you see how much I love this guy?
Let me explain myself.
One, Jake P. Summers is our wretched father how should go rot in some dark, abandoned corner of the world.
Two, yes, I hate my father. Deal with it.
Three, "who is this Kristen and Laura?" you ask. It's me and Aqua.
Four, Why do I, well, we hate our father so much? Would you like the short version, or the long one? Short it is then. Let's see, Aqua and I were six when, ugh, he discovered our powers and wanted to take us to his research facility, NERA ( the National Environmental Research Association), to conduct painful experiments on us to learn about, and extract our DNA, and clone it for further uses. Our mother tried to save us from the torture, and our father cold heartedly murdered her.
Five, you must be wondering what powers we have. Aqua can control and conjure water, while I can do the same thing with electricity and fire. We both can hover step, and we both have retractable wings, mine dragon and hers dove.
From the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of blue and red, and I heard sirens wailing. The police, never a good sign. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty." I poked Aqua in the cheek, and heard her murmur something like 'gimme a bagel'. I sighed and most literally tasered her in the shoulder, to which she got up quite quickly.
"Time to fly," I said, calmly and coolly, to which we both flicked out our wings in unison. We dashed across our makeshift runway while I deactivated the barrier, and we jumped, allowing the wind to help carry us above the city and away for one of our many make-shift homes.
