Chapter 13
"Here you are, boys. Most discreet B'n'B in town. No one will bother you for miles." The big bellied driver beamed at them. "I could check you boys in. The guy who runs the place is a good friend of mine. I could get him into giving you a discount."
"Thank you sir but..." Mic began.
"It won't be necessary." Michael interrupted.
He turned his head slightly so he was facing his twin.
I'll be right behind you. He spoke mentally to his brother.
"Michael?" Mic enquired curiously.
Go.
No! I'm staying right here with you! Mic shot back. We're in this together, remember?
"Uh.. Boys?" Came the truck driver's voice.
Michael turned from facing his brother to look at the man. They must have looked weird just seating there and staring at each given the driver had no clue about their mental conversation.
Fine. You can stay. Michael said mentally to his twin without turning his attention away from the driver.
Most of the time he put a lot of energy into shutting out the stray thoughts of others but this time he welcomed them. He purposely opened his mind to welcome the driver's thoughts, melding their minds together. It was a delicate process, so delicate but very dangerous. If he wasn't careful, he could drive the poor man insane so he had found the best way to do it, the best way to erase a person's mind without causing permanent damage was to entangle it with his own temporarily.
The driver wouldn't even notice. They never did. Even the blond girl Lily hadn't noticed what was happening to her. Although he always found this strange because for that short while, when his mind was linked to theirs, they could see the things he saw and hear what he could hear but they never acted as if things were out of the ordinary. And this driver wasn't any different.
When their minds were in perfect sync, he molded the driver's thoughts like they were made of strings as, reaching out to those memories that had him and Mic, he slowly began to cut them off. He would have no memory of them. Sure, he'd remember his trip. He just wouldn't remember the twins.
When it was done, he detached his mind from the driver's and whilst the poor man simply stared ahead in a daze, Michael turned to Mic.
"Let's go before he snaps out of it." He said.
He unlocked the passenger door and slowly got out.
"Snaps out of it?" Mic called after him. "What exactly did you do to him?"
"Nothing. I only made him forget us." Michael replied.
Mic opened his mouth to argue but decided against.
"We should hurry up and leave." He mumbled instead.
"You don't approve." Michael said.
"I didn't say that." Mic replied.
"You thought it." Michael pointed out.
"I understand why you have to do these things, Michael." Mic said with a sigh. "I don't have to like it but I understand. Now come on. Let's get out of here before someone sees us."
Michael didn't say anything but simply nodded at his twin. They made their way into the cute little bed and breakfast. It didn't look at all like a B'n'B. Rather, it looked like a small comfortable cottage with a white picket fence.
The floor was tiled neatly with granite coloured tiles. There were charcoal, cozy couches by the reception. The reception desk itself was a polished beech wood desk. By the reception stood a short, chubby and bald headed man who looked like he was in his mid forties. He wore a bored expression but when he saw them, he straightened up and beamed at them.
"Hello boys. My names Sal. How may I help you?" He asked with his best salesman smile.
"How much for a room?" Michael asked.
"A single is fifty a night with a complementary breakfast. The double is eighty." Sal said.
"And if we're staying indefinitely?" Michael asked.
"Uh, well... I'd need to charge per night for that." He said whilst scratching his hold head.
"That's fine. We'll pay each night." Mic put in before his brother could say anything.
He pulled out four one hundred dollar notes from his wallet, scoring a brow raised in surprise from his brother, and handed the cash to Sal.
"We'd like a double. That's for the next three days." Mic said to Sal. "We'd appreciate some discretion."
Sal scooped the money into his hands and licked his lips in excitement.
"One double room with complementary meals coming right up. Room 10A is just perfect for you two." He said as he gave them a key.
Michael noticed he also conveniently forgot to note their names down in the register. He decided that this was what his twin meant by discretion and that he would go along with it.
Sal showed then to their room but rather that use the stairs which would have been convenient, he had them use the fire exit. When they got to 10A, he bid them goodnight and left the boys to themselves.
"Finally we're here. I'm beat. I'm going straight to bed." Mic said ad he jumped into the queen sized bed.
"Where'd you get the cash?" Michael asked curiously.
"The truck driver had some in his compartment. I doubt he'll miss it." Mic said with a shrug.
"Wait, you stole from him?" Michael asked with interest.
"It was that or let you talk this guy into letting us stay here for free." Mic said. "I chose the lesser evil."
"The lesser evil. By stealing from the poor man." Michael asked with a smirk. "Who are you and what have you done to my brother."
"Oh shut up." Mic said, his cheeks reddening in embarrassment.
Michael simply smiled whilst shaking his head.
"So, what now?" Mic asked his brother. "They're coming after us, aren't they?"
"They are." Michael replied. "For now we just have to stay low. Stay out of sight."
"How long are we going to do that for?" Mic asked in concern.
"As long as it takes." Michael replied.
"How long will that be? We can't live on the run forever." Mic pointed out.
"No we can't. But until we can figure something out that's the best we got." Michael replied whilst rubbing his temple.
He could feel the impending headache that usually accompanied his countless sleepless nights. Although his insomnia was self imposed, he welcomed it with open arms. It was what one would call a necessary evil.
"You should get some rest." He said to his twin.
"What about you? You look worse than I do." Mic commented.
"I don't sleep much. I'll be fine." Michael replied.
"Why not?" Mic asked curiously. "That can't be healthy."
"You could say that my brain has a mind of it's own. So, every time I try to go to sleep it wanders." Michael explained. "And when that happens it breaks down every wall, every restriction I put on my abilities. In short, bad things happen when I fall asleep."
"But you can't stay awake forever." Mic pointed out.
"No. I can't." Michael replied. "So instead I go dream walking. At least that way even if my mind's awake at least my body's resting."
"Dream walking? Is that what you were doing when you came into my dream last night?" Mic asked curiously.
"Yes." Michael replied.
"What's it like?" Mic asked curiously.
This drew a smile from Michael. He knew his brother was genuinely interested. It was so like him.
"It's... Well, interesting is one word for it." He replied. "Especially since people have weird imaginations."
"Don't you ever get caught?" Mic asked.
"No." Michael replied with a snort. "Most people are too dumb to realise the difference between reality and imagination when it comes to dreams. Others just don't remember what they were dreaming about as soon as they wake up."
"Yeah, that makes sense." Mic said thoughtfully. "Well then, I'll try to get some sleep."
Michael simply nodded at his twin.
