Chapter 11
The more he fought it, the more it pulled him in until finally it felt as if he existed on a different plane. He gingerly opened his eyes and took in the scene in front of him.
The moon was high and full. Its light was shining down on the landscape. There were armed soldiers everywhere and they charged past him. In this time, he was a mere spectre so they simply passed through him.
There were no words said. No sound. Yet he knew exactly what all this meant. They were coming.
He had to warn them. If only he could get back. But his mind had other plans. It trapped him in this plane, showing him vivid flashes of scenes he couldn't quite comprehend. The scenes changed quite rapidly and too fast for him to fully grasp.
For a moment, the scene settled into an oh so familiar one. He had seen it a million times now he immediately knew what would happen next. He didn't want to see it again. He wanted out. He pulled desperately at his mind. Urging himself to return to the present. With his eyes shut, he clawed at his own mind, eager to break free from this mental prison.
But even with his eyes closed, he felt the weight of the body in his arms as it became solid for that frozen moment in time and the wet stickiness of blood as it soaked into his clothes.
Stop, please stop, he urged his mind.
He clutched the sides of his hands with both his hands, ignoring the wetness of the blood in them. He had had trouble breaking free of his visions before but this was a thousand times worse. He was trapped in this one. The very future he had tried so desperately to avoid.
And just like that, it was over. He was back to reality. It took him a minute to recollect his hearing.
"Michael!" Came his twin's voice.
He blinks in confusion and looks up at him. Mic had his hand on Michael's shoulder and he was wearing a concerned look.
Just how long had be been out of it?
"Mic." He simply says although he couldn't stop his voice from breaking.
Mic could tell something was wrong. More than that, he could feel it. It was strange that he could feel it but that wasn't what was important. Right now he would concern himself with whatever the heck had just happened to his brother.
"Michael, what's wrong?" He asks in a concerned voice.
Michael's immediate reaction freaks him out even more. He seems put of it. Like he was just seeing everything - him in particular - for the first time. He has to repeat the question before he snaps out of it.
"Michael, what's wrong?" He repeats.
Before he responds, Michael blinks as he is snapped out of his trance.
Something urgent had been on his mind before it had gone astray. What was it by the way? Oh yeah, that's right.
"We need to leave. Right now." He says to his twin. "They know we're here and they are coming."
Whatever emotion he had displayed had vanished. Leaving the usual emotionless mask he had been wearing. Mic decided he'd ask him about it later because right now they had more pressing matters.
"I'll tell Lily..." He says.
"No." Michael cuts in. "She's not coming with us."
"What do you mean? We can't just leave her here!" Mic says in frustration. "We brought her into this! What if we leave her here and something happens to her?"
"I can tell you with certainty, little brother, that if your girlfriend comes with us then something bad will happen to her." Michael says with a stern look. "Now do you want to fight a probability or a certainty?"
Mic opened his mouth to argue but decided against it. With a deep breath, he looked his brother in the eye.
"Okay then." He said slowly. "I trust you. I'll let her know."
With that he turned and left. It didn't take long for him to find Lily. She was helping out the caretaker with a few chores but when she spotted him.
"Hey." She said with a smile as she wiped her hands on a pair of blue jean shorts.
She had changed since the last time he'd seen her. Now she was wearing a maroon T-shirt, shorts and a pair of brown leather boots.
"Hey... Uhm, we - we need to talk." He said to her with a bit of a stutter.
"Uh - oh. Am I in trouble?" She asked with a mischievous smile.
"What? No, of course not!" He replied with a nervous laugh.
"Nah, I am in trouble. Otherwise you wouldn't be getting all worked up trying to tell me whatever it is you want to tell me." She pointed out as she gave him a toothy grin. "Come on, partner. Spill it out."
"Well, see.. About that..." He began. "We're leaving."
"Oh. I see. I'll get ready then." She said.
"Yeah, about that. You can't come with us." He said sadly.
It took a few seconds before she finally processed what he truly meant.
"Oh." Was all she managed to say and it only served to make him feel more guilty.
"I'm sorry. I wish you could, I really do but these people who are after Michael... You saw what happened back at your house." He said. "They are very bad people and I could never forgive myself if anything happened to you because of us and we've already put you in enough danger as it is. Please don't be mad."
She smiled sweetly at him before she replied.
"Why would I be mad, Mic?" She asked him. "You're the single most unselfish person I've ever met and you do all these things and worry about others before you worry about yourself."
This made him blush a little.
"Hey, don't be all weird on me. You know I'm right." She said with a laugh. "Although I must admit, you are kind of cute when you blush."
"Hey!" He complained as he crossed his arms and looked away.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry." She said in between fits of laughter.
When she finally stopped laughing, she looked him in the eye and gave him a fond smile.
"It's alright. Go take care of your brother." She said to him in a sincere voice. "Then when it's all over you can come find me and we can catch up."
With that she gave him a light peck on the cheek.
