Chapter 10
He had found himself a quiet spot to sit. Away from everyone. It was all he needed. Peace and quiet. Maybe then he could finally process what was happening. Together with everything else that had happened. Those feelings and emotions he had kept in cheque threatened to choke him.
Did my father lie to me for the last twelve years? He asked himself. It didn't make sense to him.
For the last twelve years he'd believed his brother had died. There'd been a funeral even. Naturally he had been prevented from doing a body viewing before the funeral. All this time he'd believed that his father had wanted to minimize the emotional trauma it would have given him. But Michael was also his son. Surely his father would have been called to see Michael's body before the funeral. That means he had known the whole time that the whole thing was a flux.
So then why had he lied to him? None of it made sense. He felt conflicted.
"Hey." A voice said from behind him.
Turning, he saw that it was Lily. He did not see her approach but it was quite befitting seeing as he'd been lost in thought.
"Hey, Lily." He said to her with a half hearted smile.
"How are you doing?" She asked as she seats down next to him.
"Honestly, I don't even know." He said with a sigh.
He stared at the horizon. The sun was moving towards the western horizon so he figured it was getting pretty late.
"I can't imagine what you're going through." She said with a low voice.
He pursed his lips. There really was nothing he could say to express the emotional stress he was going through. Somewhere between anger, resentment, excitement and sadness.
"Have you talked to him?" She asked after a moment of silence.
"A little." He replied.
Though he couldn't really call it talking. It was more like a recap of memories that had been taken from him. Talking? That's something the two of them are still yet to do.
"I take it you still have questions after that." She said with a knowing smile.
"Huh, you know me so well." He replied with a grin.
She laughed at him.
"Of course, idiot. You're my best friend." She said whilst poking him in the tummy.
Smiling, he shook his head at her.
"We better get dinner ready." He said to her.
"Oh yeah, I should warn you about that. I'm a terrible cook. All I know how to do is bacon and eggs which is all we eat at home when it's my turn to cook." She said.
She burst into laughter when she saw the cute stink eye that Mic gave her.
"Don't look at me like that." She said in between fits of laughter. "I'm being honest. If it bothers you that much you can teach me how to cook."
"What makes you think I know how to cook?" He asked with a raised brow.
"Because anyone who complains about eating bacon and eggs for dinner knows how to make something else." She repliesy with a smirk.
"What are you talking about? I only know how to make Mac and - never mind." He said, turning away.
This made her laugh even harder at him.
"Fine then. I'll teach you how to make Mac and cheese." He said as he gets up. "Come on."
He quickly helped her up and they headed back to the house. Except someone was already making dinner.
Walking into the kitchen, Lily almost got hit in the face by a tomato. What in the fudge? Since when do vegetables fly? It was like a tornado was swirling in the kitchen. There were vegetables, pots and cups everywhere. And at the very epicenter was the other twin. Michael. She would have totally freaked out if she hadn't been met by that sweet, delicious aroma and if she hadn't realised that he was actually cooking. The funny part was she wasn't exactly frightened by all this. If anything, she was quite intrigued. Then he turned to look at her with a look of absolute confusion.
Oh freckles, she thought to herself, how could I totally forget that he can read minds? Wait, is he reading my mind right now?
"You're cooking?" Mic asked, saving Lily from the embarrassment of whatever answer she would have gotten. "Are you sure that's s good idea? Are you feeling okay?"
Whoa, whoa, she thought, he's okay with what's happening right now. He's not freaking out? What the sweet freckles?!?!
"I'm fine, don't worry about me." Michael replied with a shrug. "If I do this, at least I won't feel absolutely useless."
Lily's eyed widen at this. Useless? She thought. He's a freaking Doctor Strange if Doctor Strange didn't do those weird hand movements he always did. So how the heck is he useless?
He gave her another weird look.
Oh me and my loud mouthed brain! Monkeys, monkeys, monkeys!
She saw the right corner of his mouth go up. Was he amused by her? She felt the blood rush up to her cheeks. Great, now she was blushing. This was the single worst day of her life.
"Do you need help with anything?" Mic asked his brother.
He shook his head.
"Don't worry about it. One of the scientists who handled me was a great fan of Master chef. I had to put up with seeing it in her mind every single day. Over time, some of those recipes stuck." He said with a smirk.
Part of her was impressed by the idea of him cooking. The greater part of her was shocked with what he'd just said. Scientists? Handled? What the hell?!?! A billion thoughts started racing in her mind. Was that who those rude bullies were who'd ambushed them last night? Did they want him because of what he could do? How could he even do all that?
It's none of your business.
She jumped. He hadn't spoken out loud but she was adamant that that was his voice. Which was strange because they sounded pretty much the same. Even still, she thought he was being quite rude so she narrowed her eyes at him. Of course part of her wondered why she was taken this lightly. He had just spoken into her mind. Shouldn't she be freaking out?She shook her head. She needed to clear her head so she decides to go and talk to Josh.
"I'll leave you two to it." She said to then.
Except only Mic acknowledged her with a smile and a wave. Michael completely ignored her. She knew she shouldn't be bothered but for some reason she was. It was like he was deliberately trying to get a reaction from her but she wouldn't bite. Then again she could be reading a little too much into the situation. They didn't know each other after all.
She made her way out of the house.
And that left the two boys alone.
"Are you sure you don't want help?" Mic asked his twin. "Because now I'm the one who feels useless."
"I'm sure." Michael replied, turning to face his brother. "You want to talk."
It wasn't a question. It was a fact they both knew. In response, Mic pulled the chair towards him and took a seat, facing his brother.
"Those people who are after you, who are they?" He asked.
"They are a secret government organization. They handle Bio weapons." Michael replied.
"What does that have to do with you?" Mic asked curiously, although he already had a vague idea.
"Yes, that's precisely why they want me." Michael said, confirming his suspicion. "To them, I am a biological weapon. The things I can do... They want to use me for their own benefit. At first they wanted me to work for them but when I refused they decided they would find a way to replicate my DNA in other more willing - subjects. You've met one of those subjects."
"The shape shifter." Mic said. "But you can't shape shift, can you? If they used your DNA then how come he can?"
"It doesn't work like that." Michael replied. "They can't replicate my abilities into their subjects. They can only replicate the mutant gene. That way, even if these test subjects of theirs don't get my abilities, they still get their own abilities. They can still be used as weapons."
"How many are there?" Mic asked curiously.
"I don't know. Some of them are hidden from me." Michael replied.
"So what do we do?" Mic asked in concern.
"I suppose we have to..." Michael didn't finish what he was saying because his eyes immediately glazed over.
Mic tried not to panic but it was hard to, especially when all the electrical gadgets started acting up.
He grabbed his brother and shook him vigorously.
"Michael? Michael?!?!"
