Swinging in an Autumn Haven
Dominic has known Amy since childhood. They've been forcibly put together ever since their birth years. They've been neighbors, classmates, and rivals. Dominic was the blonde, charismatic, but he couldn't speak publicly and had no real talent for amything. Amy was a brunette, impulsive, and stubborn with her ideals. They didn't mix well, like oil and water, but got along because they had to.
Dominic was in class, the rain coming down for the past few days was finally letting up as the afternoon began. He was taking notes, growing bored. Whenever Dominic was bored at school, he always liked looking at the weather and thinking about how he'd rather be anywhere but here.
"Psst. Dominic. Hey, Dominic." a voice whispered, poking Dominic.
"What is it, Amy?" he asked back.
"Do you get this?" she asked, whispering.
"This Calculus stuff? Yeah, if theta is between zero and three hundred sixty degrees and r is greater than or equal to one, then one complex number, z.1, times another complex number, z.2, is equal to r.1 times r.2 times the cosine of theta one plus theta two plus the imaginary number i times the sine of theta one plus theta two. Closed parentheses." Dominic explained.
"What?" Amy asked, thoroughly more confused.
"You want me to explain it again? If theta is between-"
"Stop. Anyway, I'm going to the park while the weather is still clear. Wanna come with?" she asked, cutting him off.
"Sure, but I've got to stop by house first." Dominic answered, agreeing to the proposal.
"Alright. I'll see you there." Amy smiled as the bell rang. Finally, freedom. Or, at least until Monday the next week at eight o'clock in the morning.
"Yeah, I'll meet you at the swing set." Dominic said, waving goodbye. The two then went separate ways, Dominic to the left, Amy to the right, each with their respective friends.
"Hey, Dominic, goin' home? I'll come with 'ya." Matt said, putting a hand on Dominic's shoulder. Dominic sighed as he was caught by his friend, Matt. Matt was this weird but insanely helpful guy who was tall and skinny with an inept memory on what he liked to do. But, he didn't like schoolwork, so he rarely memorizes what he needs to know.
"Remember, Dom," Matt said. 'Dom' was Matt's nickname for Dominic.
"Remember what, I fear?" Dominic asked.
"The ideal zettai ryouiki (A/N: 'Absolute Territory') ratio. Four, one, two point five." Matt said, grinning.
"That's great, Matt." Dominic said, tuning left as he officially left school grounds and was crossing the street.. Both Dominic and Amy lived near the high school they went to, James Garfield High. That way, they didn't have to walk far. And, for even more benefits, a park and gas station were just down the street. It was almost perfectly situated except for the numerous cars that used the street they lived on as a shortcut to the school.
"You know, Dominic, I was thinking." Matt started.
"That's dangerous." Dominic spoke.
"Anyway, what's the deal with you and Amy?" Matt asked.
"What do you mean?" Dominic asked, provoked.
"I mean, you've known her since the beginning. You guys argue over trivial things. You live door next to each other. You've been locked in a storage shed for a day with her." Matt said, counting on his fingers.
"What's your point?" Dominic asked, turning the corner to the street his house was on.
"My point is what's your deal?" Matt asked, rushing to Dominic's left, "Friends? Enemies? Frienemies?" Matt asked.
"I don't know. Never really thought about it." Dominic said calmly, unlocking his door. It was true, he hadn't really thought about it. But was this really the time to do so?
Dominic pulled open the front door and took a quick left on the first door inside. It was his room, and he put his backpack on his bed. He quickly then grabbed an umbrella and dashed back out of the front door.
"Where are you going?" Matt asked him.
"Park! I'll see you later!" Dominic waved and shouted as he jogged down the block. He looked up and saw some dark clouds in the distance, but it didn't bother him much at all.
Dominic was almost out of breath when he could start to see the jungle gym and monkey bars and seesaw that held so many memories of him and Amy as kids. He wondered why she called him out in the first place.
At last, he spotted her on the old, squeaky swing set that no one really ever got too big for. She was staring at the ground, her eyes sad and down, the wind blowing her hair in random patterns to her left, behind her. Dominic had never seen her like this before. She was always so happy, carefree, and alive when Dominic was with her.
"Hey, Amy! What's up?" Dominic asked as he approached the swing set. Amy looked up, shocked, and began to blush to Dominic's surprise.
"Uhh...why are you here?" she asked quickly.
"You invited me. Don't you remember?" Dominic asked.
"Oh yeah, that's right. Hehe..." she stuttered.
"Anyway, what's up? You look down." Dominic asked again.
"I was feeling reminiscent. You remember the storage shack?" she asked him.
"Of course, Amy. How could I forget?"
