Chapter 2: An Android's purpose

Maybe it was the blue eyes that followed every movement Jimin made, or maybe it was the soft smile that buried the uneasy feeling that was pending to drop on the human at any given moment. Jimin couldn't sense how odd this creation was, but he still stood there looking and observing the way his blue eyes brought out many tales that he longed to hear for himself.

By there, the robot's smile deepened until he let out a chuckle and instantly caused Jimin to break away from his mind where this robot already seemed to plague his thoughts. Jimin instantly became anxious being in the presence of a robot and once he snapped out of it, he hoped to run away from this peculiar creation now.

Jimin backed away slowly and only managed to muster up a forced smile before looking away and rushing to his door. However, this didn't stop the robot from staring at him further. His eyes followed Jimin like darts to a target while the young man fumbled his pockets to find his keys. Of course, Jimin knew he was blowing things out of proportion because of how anxious he would get around any living person or creation, so, the young and charming robot only continued to stare out of curiosity. Longing to ask Jimin if he was okay, but he already caught the gist that Jimin had no intention of answering to him after such a weird encounter.

Once Jimin stepped into the comfort of his own home, he quickly closed the door shut and let out a sharp exhale. When he closed his eyes, he could still see the blue eyes of the android engraved into his memories permanently.

"That was a robot..." Jimin said to himself before he opened his eyes and tilted his head. "I've never... seen a robot that was silent and calm while it observed the skies in the presence of a human. Normally they would interact with any human when they're alone but this one... didn't. Why didn't he ask if I was okay like any other would?"

Jimin continued to think as he pulled the curtains to the window slightly apart to peek through the crack where he could see the robot sitting on the snow; not saying a word and not moving another muscle. Jimin knew from the start that no other human with lack of appropriate winter clothing could sit on the snow without trembling. That robot sitting out there was very different from a human, but also a little different than most robots Jimin has ever seen.

"He's still sitting outside...How long has he been out there? How long has he been silent? What is he thinking about? Can he even think?"

Jimin asked as he continued to stare at the robot until he finally snapped out of it and shook his head. Jimin quickly pulled away from the window and took a step back to collect his thoughts after.

"I don't care... I don't even know him! So I don't care what he is or what he thinks," Jimin lashed out and closed the curtains, no longer wishing to see the robot at all. But that didn't stop him from recalling those bright blue eyes that carried the ocean within them.

Even if that moment they exchanged eye contact and observed each other's details as something so mesmerizing, Jimin couldn't help but to feel uncomfortable. It was concerning that the android didn't react in a way others would and the stare the young creation gave him was something that left Jimin speechless when it came to despising those creations only built to love.

"I don't care... I don't care..." Jimin continued to say to himself. "That android is probably defective... they will scrap him in a few days anyway! Of course, that's what they do to those who end up deactivating themselves or act out of line, right?... ah, what am I saying? I don't care!" Jimin continued to tell himself each time he thought back at the robot and trailed off again and again.

The very second they locked eyes, Jimin was desperate to put those thoughts away as if he didn't have any room for it at all. Park Jimin was so sure that he would never see this robot ever again after today so he threw away his thoughts and sat down at an empty table, finally being able to enjoy his order all on his own with no one else around; just the way he liked it.

It was something about being alone that seemed so eerie, yet peaceful to the young man. Since not many things came across his path throughout the day, it was very rare to run into new things, let alone, new faces. But when he did run into the unknown, his mind would replay the encounter over and over again in his head no matter how much he longed to throw away the memory. Jimin just couldn't move on from something so peculiar like that.

While silence filled the room like always, Jimin began to close his eyes to enjoy the silence his thoughts finally came to, completely wiping that robot off his mind for now. As he took a gentle exhale, his eyes remained closed until there was a rhythmic knock at his front door. His heart suddenly began to race as the thoughts of who could be just beyond that door, jumped right onto the robot he ran into a few minutes before.

Jimin's eyes bolted towards the front door as the pause to the following knock took place in only seconds.

"Who... is that?" Jimin questioned in his mind before getting up and approaching the door up ahead. As he reached the door, knocking became consistent until one of his eyes met with the peephole. That's when his eyes latched onto a figure he didn't expect. "Fuck..."

With a shrug and a push of his hand, he unlocked the door and swung it open to see a tall android in a black layered coat. There, the man-like creation raised one of his thick eyebrows that complemented his bright blue eyes and long eyelashes. His face carried a mellow tone of seriousness and silence, but also a tale of deep thinking. As the android stood before Park Jimin, his lips slowly turned into a soft smile as he stepped forward.

"What do you want, Taehyung?" Jimin asked and looked into the blue eyes of the perfect creation before him. His eyes had a bright hue of blue embedded into his gaze that left Jimin looking away constantly. Afraid of the confrontation that came with the Android's stare.

"What's with the attitude? Don't tell me you're tired of me already, I just got here..." Taehyung replied. The fascinating creation invited himself in as Jimin stepped aside, watching this tall android step into his home. Of course, he wasn't opposed to it. At the end of the day, Jimin was very close with the robot before him. "All alone again, Park Jimin?"

      "What's wrong with that?"

"I'm worried about your mental health. You should go outside and make some friends," Taehyung continued before dropping onto a couch and gazing around the living room freely. "I'm always available to you, yet, you stay here all on your own... this house is too vast for a lonely soul... your father purchased this house for a family, not a lonely man."

"Are you going to keep nagging me, Kim Taehyung?" Jimin questioned; folding his arms and constantly breaking eye contact with his friend as he confronted him. "I'm fine just the way I am. Even if I'm lonely, I'm slowly breaking out of my shell... slowly but surely."

"You know... if you need an easy way to make a friend, you can always meet another robot. Us androids are here to make living much easier for those who are alone! You could even custom make a robot and they will be delivered to you-"

      "No."

"No? It's an easy ticket to breaking out of your shell. I mean, what other way-"

"Taehyung, I'm not going through that again..." Jimin replied and ran his hands along his own silk hair before walking away. Pacing around the room with his hands still finding a way to fidget and his eyes never meeting with Taehyung's bright blue eyes again. "I won't put myself through another robot again, It doesn't feel right."

"Another robot... hmm.. it has been a few weeks since he's been here. To tell you the truth, this place has been very eerie without him here," Taehyung whispered and looked around the room once more and noted the spaces in between each picture frame as if a few were missing. "I can see you cleaned the place up as if he never existed."

"I did. I got rid of every trace of him," the lonely man added before sitting on an opposite couch across from Taehyung. This time, pulling out his own phone to latch his beautiful brown eyes onto his own lockscreen where the photo of the beach filled his mind with endless memories. "I... moved... on..."

     "Did you really?"

"Of course I did, Taehyung!" Jimin replied instantly and quickly pulled his gaze away from his lock screen. "How could I ever want another robot? They don't guarantee happiness... Being with something that is built to distract me from my issues will only make the hole even bigger when they're gone..."

"Jimin, we're built differently, from what you told me, what you faced is an Android that couldn't understand! Surely we all aren't built to that extent of understanding, but that doesn't mean you should push everyone away. What about meeting with an actual human? Just say the word and I can find many in this neighborhood within seconds."

"Taehyung, I appreciate your help, but that won't be necessary."

"That won't be necessary? Jimin, I'm concerned."

"You're a very kind and supportive android... but to involve any human or creation into my life at the moment.. isn't the best for me. Especially another android... I don't want to be involved with another android ever again..."

"I...I-I'm sorry. I just don't think I can comprehend..." Taehyung apologized and continued to look at Jimin through his concerned stare. "I guess I can't understand because I don't know what you had with Min Yoongi due to the lack of details in your story with him, I can't come to a conclusion in order to think of anything."

"...Did you have to say his name?" Jimin asked softly into a whisper as his hands ran up to cover his face at the sound of the android he cared about, being brought up in the conversation. "Please, let's not say his name... it does too much damage even if he's no longer here."

"Sorry..." Taehyung apologized again and looked up to see Jimin just covering his face in silence. "I didn't... think you hated him that much."

"I don't hate him... I can never hate him, I can never hate anyone or anything."

"Maybe if you tell me more, I can understand and empathize..."

"No... it will be too much for you. The last thing I want is to see you deactivated for trying so hard to understand. Please don't do it," Jimin's soft voice continued until he finally looked up at the android that was now sitting up and carrying a concerning look in his vibrant blue eyes. "I'm okay now..."

Taehyung continued to look at Jimin and tilt his head. He wanted to ask many questions and fight to make Jimin feel better now, but he remained sitting there, staring at the human as silence drowned the two after the weight of the conversation. Since Taehyung didn't know much to carry on the conversation and since Jimin refused to fill him in on everything in fear of it being too much for him to comprehend, Taehyung desperately looked for something else to bring onto the table in order to cheer Jimin up.

His purpose as an android was to make the human before him happy and forget the many issues that held him back before. In this case, it was the issues that were attached with Jimin's previous android that left him resenting any other creation willing to come into his life now. Taehyung acknowledged Jimin's issues, but unfortunately, he was only limited to doing so much for him. At the end of the day, distracting the humans from their loneliness was an Android's purpose.
