Chapter 1: The 'Boy' Next Door
A delicate brown eyed stare danced over every soul right outside of the window at a small coffee house tucked away in the city of Seoul. It was a cold afternoon; a sheet of white snow covered all corners of the vast street just outside of a coffee shop. With only a bit of the warm sun fighting through layers of the cold weather, it was enough to shine through the glass of the window and kiss the skin of the pale man sitting at a table; far from many other customers within the shop.
Park Jimin was the name of this lonely man isolated from many other customers. His eyes that carried fears and innocence were tied into one while his charming face carried many stories he dared to speak of through his plump and gentle pink lips. His fair skin was smooth and as pale as the white snow sitting outside on the ground. Park Jimin was an absolute showstopper! Many people adored looking at him, but never approached him as he sat alone in every public place. Far from humankind as if they carried a disease.
His hands locked around his own body; with the black turtleneck he had under his beige winter coat, he felt no cold within the warm coffee shop. However, it wasn't the cold he was protecting himself from, it was the anxiety he had while looking at other people standing around and laughing with others. Jimin's cautious and innocent stare became lost at the way many people held hands with blue-eyed creations that only kept a stiff posture and moved abnormally. This was their world today. Androids living with humans peacefully.
Many could tell who was an Android by the way they moved and held off from blinking longer than they should. There were new versions, which were very realistic to humans to the point where they would even have a built-in heartbeat, they would simulate big sighs but have no lungs to hand the air to, they would also be programmed to empathize, but it was never enough. As humans would have their limits, so did robots. The young man sitting alone despised the idea that some people would choose to be in a relationship with Androids. Of course, that was their sole purpose when functional Androids were all created. They were all made to keep others from being alone in relationships and become the perfect creation. Far different than the flaws a human being would have.
"Why do we rely on a creation by man to fulfill the loneliness we have? Why not another living and breathing person? It's like... loving a computer that only does what it's told..." The man whispered as he continued to look out the window where he could see more people become happier than ever with their hands held by their own Androids or Gynoids.
With the sight of love being thrown around everywhere outside, Jimin sighed and held up his phone where his eyes were set onto his own lock screen. Within his lockscreen, a photo of the beach was shown but nothing more. It was a calming photo for him. But the reasoning behind why it was his favorite, was something so personal, he never even tried to think about it out loud.
"Loving creations like that can only... leave you feeling more isolated than before..." Jimin whispered again and as he continued to look at the beach through his lockscreen, the small coaster-shaped device sitting on the table began to vibrate. Causing him to snap out of his thoughts instantly when his order was ready.
With the sound of the heavy vibrations on the coaster causing Jimin to flinch, his hands were thrown over the coaster as he quickly picked it into his trembling hands and stood up. Causing a few stares from people and of course, a few androids looking over at the young man sitting far away.
"Fuck... everyone is so nosy..." Jimin bickered in his head, still trembling at the sight of everyone staring at him.
When everyone looked away on their own, Jimin could feel as if the eyes doubled while they were on him. Of course, this was his social anxiety. He would feel as if he was being watched whenever he was in a public place filled with other people. Jimin's fears of being noticed doubled out in public to the point where he would rarely go out for this reason. But when he did step out to be alone, his anxiety would never let him hear the end of it.
Jimin walked down the path of many tables, anxiously holding onto the coaster that kept vibrating in his hands as he could feel stares lock onto his every movement. Of course, it wasn't reality, but he wouldn't dare to look up and see where the feeling was coming from or if it was just his fear taking control of his actions again. Eventually, he made it to the counter and threw the coaster down suddenly where the worker was there to hand over his order.
"Thank you so much for your patience!" A cheery voice called out to him. Jimin only dared to keep staring at the counter and nod his head. Pushing himself to smile at the tone of the worker's voice. "Here's your S'mores Frappuccino along with a chocolate macaron."
"Thank...you..." Jimin said with a bow before gathering his order, but before he could walk off and escape the endless fears clawing their way into his mind, the worker spoke out to grab his attention.
"Park Jimin, right? I knew you looked familiar..." the man continued as Jimin couldn't help but to keep picking at the cheery tone to his voice. This alone made Jimin fight to look up to the man. Surely he must have known him from somewhere, right?
"Uhh... yes..?" Jimin hesitated at first until he was finally able to break away from the fear of looking at the worker before him.
His cautious eyes latched onto a bright smile with perfectly white pearls sitting within them. Jimin couldn't help but to notice his perfectly sculpted nose and a gentle brown gaze that told many stories of glee when that man smiled as if he had no stress weighing down his shoulders. Daring, happy, and positive was painted on the outside, but a true mystery was embedded behind that bright smile of his.
"That's good to know, my name is Jung Hoseok! I noticed we lived right next to each other. Of course, it's hard to recognize you up close so I thought I was wrong at first."
"Oh...that's nice," Jimin disconnected himself from the conversation. He was too nervous to hold a conversation with his own neighbor, Hoseok caught onto it and only smiled once more and tilted his head carefully.
"Well I need to get back to work, thank you for confirming! Next time, I'll give you a discount," Hoseok added as Jimin nodded his head and walked away.
Jimin thought back at the easy brown eyes of his neighbor. In no way was Hoseok an Android. By the way his genuine smile carried a warm and true feeling, it was far more welcoming than any stare of a soulless robot. Jimin felt better than he usually did when it came to an encounter like that and only thought of continuing the conversation when it was already done. He imagined having the confidence to make a friend, but his shoes kept kissing the ground in the opposite direction from where the counter resided.
Jimin noticed that the sun was only setting now. The afternoon was shifting to the evening where the sun failed to melt away any ice but left with a beautiful orange sunset. Jimin had plans to eat outside for once and get over his anxiety just like this, but he knew deep down that he would never fight off such a fear he developed as a child. And so, he found himself walking out of the coffee shop with his macarons kept in a small brown bag while he carried his Frappuccino in his pale hands that were concealed within his black mittens.
"I should have stayed... I can't even last in a public place without leaving the second someone speaks to me!" Jimin thought to himself and continued to walk alone as everywhere he looked, he noticed many couples holding hands and that just pushed him to walk faster while he held on tightly to the brown bag in his clutches. "I might as well go home... there's nothing else for me to go to at this hour, the sun will set and the last thing that I want is a perfect little robot asking me if I need help."
Jimin continued to bicker to himself as his fears only dragged him home for the day. He walked alone but also took time to enjoy the careful colors of pink and orange in the sky with a hint of a cool blue from the weather. Moments like these, left him feeling more alone when the world was already swept from under their feet when it came to loving robots when they couldn't find love with another living soul. Jimin has heard it all before and despised being with a robot who was only built in order to know empathy and deeper meanings to words that meant a lot to humans. They only knew the definition but never understood it.
"I don't understand... I know how it feels to rely on a robot for love and support, but I lost the understanding of what makes it alright to rely on one completely..." Jimin thought in his silent mind while looking at a few Gynoids here and there latching onto their own partners happily just like a human being would. Jimin continued to hold onto the thought of relying on a robot for emotional support and love before glancing at his phone. Gazing at the picture of a beach that meant so much more than just a photo to him. "I'm such a fool... a fool just like the rest of these people here... I'm no different..."
Jimin continued to walk alone until the streets he approached became familiar. The further he walked, the fewer people he encountered and by then, the sky kept such a beautiful orange color along with the bright and fluffy clouds assisting the big canvas in the sky. Jimin refrained from drinking out of his Frappuccino due to how cold it was and only hoped to enjoy it with his untouched chocolate macaron in the comfort of his own home. Not even daring to stay in a public place to enjoy a few hours away from home.
As the young man reached his neighborhood, his eyes latched onto the sky until he turned to his residence and finally peeled his eyes away. He recalled Hoseok mentioning that they lived right by each other so he longed to gaze at the house of the coffee shop worker since he never did so before. In Jimin's world, he only gazed upon his own home and continued his day without inspecting anything else. Of course, he did this because he didn't want to find someone looking back at him and causing his anxiety to shoot up like a rocket.
With the houses crowded up with its own respectable distance in between each residence, Jimin looked over at Hoseok's house and instantly noticed a young man sitting on the snow and looking up at the beautiful colors in the sky like a child that was first experiencing the world through his own eyes. Jimin's brown gaze locked onto the man and caught onto his features that were heavily amplified in Jimin's focus. Staring at someone like this was something Jimin feared before but now, he just couldn't tell why he was able to do it without being afraid. Was it because the man didn't even notice Jimin at all?
Those bright and wondrous eyes were tinted in only the brightest hues of blue that stood out from the young man sitting on the snow, he didn't tremble nor did he flinch at the cold. All the young creation wore was a black turtleneck shirt that had the hems tucked into his black sweatpants with chunky black platform boots. At that moment, Jimin automatically knew this wasn't a human being, but an android who was just sitting outside; admiring the view of the beautiful skies and not acknowledging anything. That was something Jimin had never seen in an android before.
The charming man continued to stare at the curious Android; practically memorizing his pale and sharp features that made his black silk hair stand out more. With every second Jimin took observing this man, he noticed the Android run his pale fingers along the snow. But, he continued to look up at the sky as if he wasn't being stared at from the very beginning.
When seconds turned into a minute, the robot looked down with his bright blue gaze and made a soft smile to himself before looking to the right where Jimin stood. Sending chills in his direction as a warning but Jimin misread them and dared to keep it up. Finally locking eyes with the man who was standing and staring for quite some time. At that very second, Jimin couldn't say he was anxious, but rather, curious about the 'boy' next door.
