Chapter 6

RECAP*******************I noticed as we all ventured deeper into the tunnel that it sloped downward slightly and that its ceiling was lined glowing white moss. A few feet back it then widened out into a small cave.

Will placed Kevin gently against a wall and I placed Kelly next to him. "I'll go see if I can find some firewood or something." Kendal said. "And I'll search for food." Jacob said. They both left and the rest of us laid down. I quickly fell into a deep dreamless sleep.**********************

I awoke to the smell of cooking meat, and a warm fire brightening up the cave. I sat up and stretched the sleep from my aching muscles. Everyone except for Kelly was awake and they were sitting around the fire, eating meat skewers. Will noticed that I was awake and extended me one.

I dug into it ravenously, whatever this meat is it tasted amazing. "What is this?" I said in between bites. "It's really good, tastes like....hmmmm... chicken, but fruity?" "Well that's the strange thing, it looked like a dog sized chicken with  really long tail feathers. Its feathers were all these different colors mostly different hues of blues, reds, and golds.

The strange thing is that yesterday I could have sworn that we were the only living things in this place. But now, you can barely go a few feet in this place without seeing something out of this world." Kevin said. "It's like this place is waking up. The ecosystem is has been flipped on somehow. It's whole different world from yesterday."

Pondering this I went to go check on Kelly, she was muttering unintelligible things under her breath, a deep frown on her face, her skin was slick with sweat and she kept twitching. "How long has she been sleeping?" I ask. "she hasn't woken up since you brought her here. she's been tossing and turning only for a few minutes. Maybe she's having a nightmare."

I closed my eyes and opened my mind and reached out to Kelly. I was immediately hit with an onslaught of fear and panic. I sent her calming emotions through the mental link and she calmed down a little. I closed off my mind once again and opened my eyes. She has stopped twitching and wore a serene expression on her face.

I turned back to the rest of our group. "So what are we doing today?" "I think we should head back to the tower. it's the only thing that seems like it would have clues in it." Will replied. "we searched high and low around that thing and found zilch." James argued. "yeah but like Kevin said it's like the ecosystem has been rebooted so what about the tower? Maybe there's been a change. We won't know until check it out." Will rebuked. "I think Blondie has a point and it's not like we have anything better to do." Kendal interjected. The rest nodded our heads in agreement.

"Sounds like a plan, when do we leave?" said Kelly. I hadn't even noticed her get up and sit by Jason. "Are you sure that you're up for it though? Maybe we should take a day to rest?" I asked, even though everyone looked determined the look tired.

Tara looked paler than normal and despite her relaxed expression I could see the bruise like circles under Kendal's eyes. "Naw, I'll be fine. I'll make sure not to push myself too much. I swear no mind jacking killer wasp swarms." she promised. I glanced at the rest of the group and they all confirmed they wanted to leave.

"Well let's move out." I said. Everyone proceeded to make their way to the entrance. As we left I cave I noticed that someone had placed vines and other foliage over the entrance to obscure it. Unless someone knew what they were looking for no one could find it.

As the moved further into the forest it sounded like a whole new place. You could hear various animal noises and new, vibrant, foliage was all around. The wind now seemed stronger. Many clouds now covered the sky in the distance, dark and swollen with rain, lightning streaking from them.

"Wow Kev. you really weren't kidding when you said it was a different world from yesterday." I said, my voice filled with awe. "Guys we need to get a move on, cause that storm looks real bad. I sure wouldn't want to be caught in that." Kendal pointed out. "I agree lets get a move on" Will said, trudging ahead with Kevin at his side.

As our group moved on, I noticed something. While Will pointed out interesting wildlife making Kevin smile. Kendal, cracking cheesy jokes, trying to make Tara laugh. James and Kelly walking shoulder to shoulder, quietly talking to one another. Despite all we've been through we could still manage to be friends and act like regular teenagers. Observing this made me think that we have a chance of making it home, wherever that may be.

I quickly realized that everyone had paired off leaving me alone. It caused a slight ache in my chest that I pushed down. It only settled in my stick, creating a heavy feeling there.
