Chapter One

Berrykit groaned quietly as he felt a small paw nudge him awake.

"Berrykit!" Whispered a small voice.

Berrykit reluctantly opened his eyes and saw a pure white kitten in front of him.

"We're going to go explore!" Exclaimed Flickerkit from the corner, eyes wide with excitement.

Berrykit sat up, looking unsure. "Are you sure? We aren't aloud to go outside. We could get in trouble..."

Frostkit huffed. "You're starting to sound like Cherrykit," they meowed.

"Hey!" Protested Cherrykit.

Frostkit rolled their eyes. "It'll be fine, Berrykit. Trust me!"

"Well, if you promise we'll be okay, then I guess I'll come," meowed Berrykit, still a little unsure.

Frostkit looked triumphant. "Let's go, then!"

Frostkit led the way with Flickerkit right next to them. Berrykit and Cherrykit were following a bit behind the other two.

"This way!" Meowed Frostkit, pointing with their extremely long tail.

The kits went on like that for a little bit, slinking through the shadows of the camp and following Frostkit's directions.

"How does Frostkit know where to go when it's this dark?" Cherrykit inquired Berrykit.

Berrykit tilted his head to the side, thinking.

"I dunno. They must come out here to play a lot. They are two moons older than me," Berrykit responded.

Cherrykit didn't seem satisfied with that answer, but dropped the subject.

After what seemed like moons, the four kits arrived at the camp entrance where Pineclaw was guarding.

"Over here!" Whispered Frostkit, heading towards a thorn thicket.

Berrykit looked at it anxiously. "That seems like it could hurt. I heard that one time that Laurelflight got a thorn in her paw and had to stay in the medicine cat den for a whole moon!"

Frostkit rolled his eyes. "C'mon, scaredy mouse."

Frostkit wriggled under the thicket and waited for the others.

Flickerkit followed, then Cherrykit, and finally Berrykit. They then slunk out of the thicket and silently padded to the forest.

The forest was so big to Berrykit. The small tom had never been outside of camp before, and an elder, Goldenbreeze, told him stories about all the dangers outside of the camp; foxes, badgers, bears, two-legs, rogues, evil CliffClan cats, and traitorous GardenClan cats.

But, Frostkit seemed to know what they were doing, and Berrykit trusted Frostkit. Well, that wasn't anything special. Berrykit trusted everyone.

There were a lot of strange smells, too. There were a few familiar smells, like the trees, grass, and redish-yellow leaves. There were strange odors, too. There was a strange, sharp scent that made Berrykit scrunch up his nose in disgust.

"What is that?!" Hissed Frostkit, wrinkling up their nose.

"Maybe it's something dangerous! We should really head back to camp," Berrykit meowed anxiously.

Frostkit rolled their eyes at the russet tom once again. "It's fine, Berrykit. It might be something like prey!"

Flickerkit's eyes lit up. "Imagine if we come back to camp with prey! They'd make us apprentices early for sure!"

"Or we could get in trouble for being outside of camp," pointed out Berrykit. "And then we could be apprentices a moon late."

"It has happened before," agreed Cherrykit. "I heard that Mossleap had his apprentice ceremony delayed because he snuck out as a kit to follow Lilacice, who was an apprentice then."

Frostkit glared at Berrykit and Cherrykit. "Fine, if you two are such scaredy mouses, you can head back to camp by yourselves. C'mon, Flickerkit, let's leave these bee brains alone."

Berrykit shifted uneasily, but stayed next to Cherrykit as the other two padded away.

"Which way leads back to camp, again?" Berrykit asked, hoping Cherrykit knew. To the fluffy tom, Cherrykit seemed to know everything.

But Cherrykit didn't know the answer to that question. Frostkit had taken so many twists and turns in the almost pitch blackness that it was almost impossible for the 3 and 4 moon old kits to remember which way to go.

"This...way?" meowed Cherrykit uncertainly, heading the opposite direction that Frostkit and Flickerkit had gone.

Berrykit followed Cherrykit, trusting her judgement completely.

Just then, they heard a growl from behind them...

"Are you sure we should've left them back there?" Asked Flickerkit.

"They shouldn't have questioned my judgement," growled Frostkit without looking back.

Flickerkit looked at the white kit concerned, but didn't say anything.

Frostkit perked up and tilted their head to the side, as if hearing something.

"Let's head back now," meowed Frostkit. "We have a distraction, so we'll be able to easily sneak back in and pretend we were asleep."

Flickerkit opened their mouth as if to say something, but Frostkit was already walking back towards camp.
