Chapter 23
If you told me that I would be standing in front of a door that led to the council of elves I would have laughed in your face and probably sent you to the loony bin. But this was all too real as I stared down the wooden door that held answers behind it. I couldn't help but feel fear trickling into my veins. I expected exactly what I got. A group of scary individuals that made me want to go hide behind the pillar in the corner and I hadn't even met them yet.
"So here's the deal, they will know you, inside and out once you step into the Reltek. Basically the big circle in the middle that might be surrounded by flames."
I looked at him with wide eyes, this was starting to sound like they would burn me alive.
"But do not talk to them. They hear thoughts and memories and everything in your head. Talking to them just causes pain for them and it will make them some very unhappy people. So smile, don't run and what ever you do, don't give them reason to doubt you."
He smiled and nodded at me as the doors opened, giving way into a glorious ball room. At the end sat a group, ranging from blue skin to pointy ears to wings and I couldn't stop staring at them. They were all so beautiful and held themselves like they knew it all too well.
"So you're the girl that everyone is talking about."
"The human that wasn't really human."
"We can figure out everything and your life."
"Because you stand before us, we can see your past and your present and some of us, even your future."
"You submit to this willingly or you can be forced to do it. It will be painful but you can choose how painful because we need to know and what your punishment should be. "
My head had each voice as clear as day and I could tell where each one came from, this was all too familiar. I looked around me at each one. "And why exactly would I be punished? I haven't done anything wrong."
It was a second too late when they were all screeching that I realized how I had messed up. Once it died down, they all seemed to smile at me and I felt chills run down my body. Those were not happy smiles.
"We shall see."
One by one they all stood up, and began to walk towards me. I could nearly swear they were gliding if I didn't hear the soft pattering of shoes across the floor. I wanted to run from them. They did not look like they meant well and definitely looked like they would enjoy it.
One at a time they put a hand on me, some freezing cold and others were as hot as fire but I didn't even shiver.
A low rumbling came from each one, the next person adding onto the noise until my ears were hurting. I covered my ears and watched them as they grew louder and louder. The humming was obnoxious and yet comforting to hear. It made me want to sleep but something told me if I slept that it would be the very last thing I did.
Swirls of black danced in my eyes and I swayed. The floor rushed up to me and colors exploded in the black.
I was standing in the woods, snow covered the ground and when I turned I saw the prince and me talking. But it wasn't him, it was the imposture that had led me away from Jordan. Well, come to think of it, he probably knew all along.
It was like watching a play. I was there watching myself talk to him, watching myself run and be caught. Watching myself be taken into the clearing and then the view shifted. It was me, sitting in a chair, talking to the Inibrius queen. I was tied up and my hair was as white as it is now.
After a few minutes, a woman came through the door, dressed form head to toe in black. She fought the Vampire queen, while I struggled in the chair.
I didn't remember any of this.
I didn't remember escaping the chair, I didn't remember the Vampire queen fleeing. And I definitely didn't remember he stabbing me as she ran. I was bleeding out onto the floor when the woman picked me up and ran out the door. I followed her, watching as she took me away and into the forest once more. She pulled my shirt up, and the wound was gushing blood. I knew there was no way I'd live.
She mumbled words over me, but I saw the light leaving my eyes.
And then the prince showed up. The right one I assumed, but the woman didn't flinch. They talked and he leaned over me, checking for breath. He leaned up and shook his head, mumbling along with her.
I didn't know whether to be thankful or grossed out as I shot up off the ground. I startled both of them as they jumped back. The shocked looks on their faces told me what I needed to know as I fell back onto the ground.
I shouldn't be alive.
The woman muttered out a few words before touching my head and I was dragged back from that world.
I woke up on the ground, back in the palace, surround by more bodies.
Bodies of the council. One still still sat up, a far away look in his eyes and a pained look on his face. He looked as I felt, drained and in agony.
When his eyes focused on me he screamed. A scream that made my ears burn, and guards come rushing in.
I couldn't move as I stared at them, more and more guards around me. Each one staring at me in fear, as if they were terrified all over again.
"Somebody call the King!"
