No Forgiveness Without Sacrifice

Ok, I seriously need to move on to some actual requests, but I couldn't help but write another Saw oneshot cuz I binge-watched all the movies with Crystel semi-recently lmao.
But unlike the last one, this one involves Papyrus. Yes, I'm gonna torture Papyrus even more now. Fite meh. >:3
Oh, also furbyandfriends , this one's kinda for you. Just cuz you mentioned wanting Sans and Papy, and I'd already had this one written lol.
Btw, the above artwork is by guppys-paw on tumblr! :D
********************************************

Papyrus awoke in a dark room, his memory foggy. Where was he right now? How did he get here?
The tall, lanky skeleton sat upright, holding a gloved hand to his head. After a few moments, he tried to stand up, but was immediately alerted to the fact that he was chained to something by the sound of clattering chains.
"What the-" Papyrus trailed off as he heard a voice from the other end of the room.
   "Papyrus?"
The skeleton looked around, his gaze landing on two pinpricks of light glowing in the darkness of the room. "Sans? Is that you?"
Suddenly, the lights came on, revealing that the two brothers were in a large room, each chained to a pipe on opposite ends of the room.
"Wh-What's going on?! Where are we?!" Papyrus blurted out, his eye sockets wide with fear.
"I-I dunno! I'm just as confused as you are, Pap!" Sans answered, his left eye flaring blue.
Papyrus looked around, finally resting his gaze on a tape player lying on the ground by his foot. He picked it up, pressing a button to see if it would play anything. Much to his surprise, a dark-sounding voice, deep and scratchy, came through, causing him to flinch.
"Greetings, Papyrus. I wanna play a game."
"How does he know my name?"
"For years, you have watched over your brother, loving and caring for him. But it seems recently, you have started to take him for granted. Yelling at him for his laziness, calling him out for slacking off..."
"Wh-What?!" Papyrus exclaimed, his right eye glowing orange.
"Today, you will prove how much you truly care about him. I have implanted a device into Sans's ribcage that is set to go off in one hour. When it does, your brother will be blown to bits from the inside out."
Papyrus winced, his gaze trailing up to his brother, who's breathing was gradually becoming more rapid as he gripped his sternum with his hand.
"There is only one way it can be stopped. I am aware of a strange power you possess. One that you have kept under lock-and-key every day of your life. I'm certain you know what I am talking about."
Sans flinched, the light fading from his eye sockets. "How'd this guy find out about that..?"
"The device implanted into Sans's ribcage is directly linked to one inside of yourself. But whereas your brother's will be lethal to him, yours is more of a sensor. When you activate your power, it will pick up on it."
"Wh-What are you getting at?!" Papyrus whimpered, a fearful expression on his face.
"In order to save your brother, you must shift into your alternate form. However, as you change forms, your brother will be forced to do so as well. But, you must do this quickly. You only have one hour to disarm the trap."
Papyrus instinctively clutched a hand to his chest, sweat forming on his skull.
"Make your choice. Live or die. The fate of your brother is in your hands."
"Oh god... I-I dunno how to do this!" Papyrus exclaimed, his eye glowing orange.
"It just told you how! Didn't ya listen?!" Sans snapped, his eyes narrowed. "You have to transform to save me. How much simpler can ya get?!"
"You don't have to shout at me! I heard the damn tape! I just don't know how to get this started!" Papyrus retorted.
He'd done it so many times on his own free-will that it should have come easy. However, in times of stress, he had trouble trying to kick things into action.
"Well, just... Think about your other form. Imagine it in your mind. Imagine what it feels like to be in that body. That helps me," Sans suggested, shrugging his shoulders.
Papyrus opened his mouth to respond, but quickly closed it again as he reconsidered what Sans had said. That could work.
"Okay. It's worth a shot," Papyrus said finally, sitting down on the floor with his back against the wall.
"Cool. Just be quick about it. I don't wanna be blown to bits," Sans sighed, a hint of fear in his usually calm voice.
"Don't worry. I won't let you die. I promise," Papyrus assured, though deep-down, he was doubting himself.
The taller skeleton closed his eyes, inhaling deeply. In his mind, he tried to picture his alternate form. Once he had the image of it in his thoughts, he imagined how it felt to be in his other form.
"Sans?"
"Yeah bro?"
"What if this doesn't work? What if we run out of time?"
Sans averted his gaze from his brother, thinking hard. "Heh... Dammit, I wish I could go over there and give you a hug..."
"Let's just get through this. You can hug me all you want later," Papyrus replied, his left eye sliding open.
The light in Sans's eye sockets flickered slightly as a doubtful look crossed his face. "I hope you're right bro."
There was a moment of silence as Papyrus forced himself to concentrate once more. After a few minutes, the taller skeleton winced, causing Sans to look up.
"You okay?" Sans asked, blinking slowly.
"Y-Yeah. I think I got it now..." Papyrus answered, tugging at his scarf.
   "I can tell that."
   "How-"
"The sensor. Remember? The device in me is linked to one in you. In other words, when you start transforming, it's gonna force me to do it as well," Sans explained, his voice surprisingly calm.
"Oh... Yeah. I forgot about that..." Papyrus trailed off, as if losing his train of thought.
"You forgot what you were doing, didn't ya?"
"Wh-What? No! I just..." Papyrus's expression grew slightly annoyed. "Yes. Yes I did. Let me guess, you felt that too?"
Sans nodded, a slight smirk on his face. "Aww~ Ya don't like me being aware of your feelings~?"
"No! That's not it!" Papyrus whined defensively.
Sans chuckled. "This is pretty entertaining."
Suddenly, Papyrus doubled over with a grunt of pain, his hand instinctively clutching his wrist. At that same moment, Sans winced and held a hand to his chest.
"M'kay... Not so entertaining now... Forget I said that..." Sans huffed, a weak grin on his face.
"L-Let's just stop talking. M-Maybe it'll help us f-focus more..." Papyrus suggested, idly digging his fingertips into his wrist.
"Talking h-helps me though..." Sans muttered.
"You're not the one who has to force yourself into doing this though. You basically just have to sit there and endure the suffering while I do this," Papyrus pointed out.
"I'm being forced to transform too, ya know," Sans argued.
"You aren't doing most of the work here!" Papyrus snapped, his right eye flaring orange.
Without warning, Papyrus lurched forward with a cry of agony, his hands twitching in response to a sharp pain that shot through them. Sans flinched, partly because of the muffled sound of bones cracking from the other side of the room, but also due to a jolt of pain that ran through his chest.
"G-God... I forgot wh-what it was like to be forced into doing th-this against my will..." Sans murmured softly, resting the back of his skull against the wall behind him and closing his eyes.
"J-Just let it happen... It'll go by quicker, trust me..." Papyrus replied, his voice weak.
Sans screamed in anguish, arching his back as pain shot down his spine.  "I-I know... B-But it's hard to just s-stand by and let it h-happen..."
"Just-" Papyrus cut off with another pained grunt, his grip tightening on his wrist.
"I-I'm sorry, bro... I-It reminds me of when G-Gaster still had control over us..." Sans said quietly.
Papyrus inhaled sharply, clenching his hand into a fist and slamming it against the wall, growling softly as he did so.
Sans flinched. "You okay bro?"
"No."
The smaller skeleton was taken aback by the tone of his brother's voice. He hadn't expected that such a forceful voice could have come from Papyrus.
"Talk to yourself all you want... Just stop talking to me," Papyrus muttered, his voice hoarse.
"What the hell did I do wrong??"
Papyrus shot a fierce glare at his brother, his right eye sparking with neon-orange flames. Sans twitched and looked away as he noticed that his teeth had grown sharper and his skull had become warped; much more like the creature he was turning into than the usual, friendly skeleton he knew and loved.
The smaller skeleton sighed. "Never mind... It doesn't matter-" He broke off with a groan, doubling over while grasping his ribcage with both arms.
Papyrus glanced at his brother, a weak gleam in his eye. "Look, I-I'm sorry. I just wanna f-focus and get out as f-fast as we c-can."
"I understand th-that. Ya don't have ta be a j-jerk," Sans growled, his eyes narrowing.
"I-I'm not trying to be a jerk. B-Back off."
Sans's eye flickered blue. "Well it f-feels like you are."
"Shut up," Papyrus hissed, his voice slightly more animalistic than it had been previously.
Sans was about to respond when he felt a sharp surge of pain rush through his legs, causing him to collapse to the floor as his feet began to restructure themselves. He moaned in agony, his clawed fingertips digging into the ground.
He could feel the metal cuff around his ankle getting tighter before it finally broke, freeing him from the corner he'd been forced to remain in.
Papyrus himself had fallen forward, almost mirroring Sans's actions. The two brothers exchanged dreary glances, saying nothing. They didn't need to. They always seemed to have some sort of mental link. It was a brotherly kind of thing.
The pain was getting worse. Papyrus could feel control slipping from his grasp. Sans didn't have any control to lose. Nothing about this was his to command. It frightened him.
The smaller skeleton choked a scream as the transformation overtook him, his awareness of the the world around him fading. He didn't even hear Papyrus shrieking in agony, his usually high-pitched voice deepening mid-screech.
Sans stole one final glance at his brother before he lost himself, exactly at the same moment Papyrus lost the final thread of control he'd held onto.
Sans heard a small bleep as the device in his ribcage deactivated, sensing the end of his transformation. He breathed a sigh of relief. It was over.
It didn't take him long to realize that this, however, was not nearly the end of the test. His gaze trailed up to Papyrus, who wasn't acting at all like himself.
Usually, Pap had incredible control over his blaster form. His own free-will was so powerful that it was easily able to suppress the beast's primal instincts to keep fighting. He'd spent years practicing this special kind of magic, and as a result, his own ability to take command was almost unreal.
But this time, it didn't seem that Papyrus was in control at all.
Sans looked down, noticing for the first time, a tape player of his own. His name was scrawled out in big letters on a duct tape label. He curiously tapped the play button with a single claw, flinching as the same loud voice from before boomed out from the device.
"Greetings Sans. As you should already know, I want to play a game. The rules are simple. Don't get killed."
   Sans growled, his eyes narrowed.
"You are probably wondering why you are here. You see, I've seen the way you act towards your brother, especially with a certain power you both possess. It is blatantly obvious how much you hate that he has to endure everything you do."
Sans froze as Papyrus roared, sending chills down his spine.
"You've even walked away from him in times when he needs you more than ever, even though he stays by your side no matter what. He does not care for how terrifying the situation might be. He always wants to be there for you. But it seems you are never there for him in return."
Sans rumbled softly, lowering his head guiltily. He'd known that his brother suffered during transformations just as much as he did, but he never stayed by to make sure he was alright.
"Today, we will see if your love is enough to overpower the hatred that has built up in your brother over the past few years. The device implanted into your brother was not just a sensor for picking up his transformation, but also a mental trap, holding him hostage in the mind of the feral beast he has become. You and I both know that the blaster only has one motive: To kill relentlessly, no matter the victim."
Sans shuddered, glancing up at his brother, who had turned to face him, a terrifying madness gleaming in his glowing orange eyes.
"In order to save him, as well as yourself, you must fight back against him. You must convince him of who he truly is. Since it presumably only took you around 15 minutes to complete the first part of the trap, you have been given 45 minutes to complete this task. If you do not succeed, Papyrus's consciousness will die, leaving only the untamed creature that stands before you."
Sans's pupils dilated to slits, giving his eyes a distinct feline appearance. He could feel his soul pounding frantically within his ribcage, lashing out in panic.
   "Let the game begin."
Papyrus snarled, orange smoke pouring from his partly-opened jaws as he crept forward, his claws clicking against the tiled floor. Sans flinched away, his tail swaying from side to side.
The taller beast roared as he leapt into the air, talons outstretched as he tried to tackle his brother. Sans's eyes widened, instinctively darting out of the way before Papyrus could land his attack.
He used his smaller size to his advantage, shooting underneath the taller skeleton and quickly flipping over onto his back, landing a strong kick to his brother's sternum and sending him flying backwards. Papyrus slammed against the wall, denting it on impact. He screeched wildly, scrambling frantically to get back on his feet.
Sans stood up straight in an attempt to make himself look larger than he was. "Papyrruss! Sstop! Thiss issn't the rreal you!"
Papyrus snarled, clawing at his skull helplessly. Sans's confidence faltered as the larger beast rose up taller, looming over him. His neon-orange gaze was fixated on Sans, his stare unblinking.
Papyrus stepped closer, a low growl rumbling from his throat. Sans, without thinking, lunged forward and swept his brother's legs out from under him, causing him to fall to the floor with a loud thud.
Sans wasted no time in pinning him down, pressing his hands against Papyrus's shoulder blades and forcing them to the ground. He shook the taller skeleton roughly, trying to snap him out of his crazed state.
"C'mon brro... Ya gotta fight it. Pleasse. Do it forr me, Pap."
Papyrus howled with fury, surging upwards and knocking his brother backwards, slamming the smaller creature's body onto the tiled floor. Sans yelped slightly at the force of the impact.
"Papyrruss! It'ss me, yourr brrotherr! Pleasse!"
Papyrus drew his head back, opening his mouth as a ball of raw magic began to build up in his maw. The neon glow it produced illuminated his massive form, outlining every cruel, savage detail with orange highlight.
Sans, acting on instinct alone, kicked out his back legs, colliding with the taller beast that had him pinned down and sending him crashing to the ground below. A blast of bright orange energy burst from the creature's jaws, barely missing Sans's head by a couple inches.
Sans lowered his head, waiting for the other skeleton to get up before charging into him, shoving him backwards with his skull. He finally managed to run him into a wall, pinning him there.
"Papyrruss! Ya gotta lissten to me! Ya gotta take back contrrol!" Sans insisted, staring at his brother dead in the eye.
Papyrus roared, shaking his head violently from side to side, his glowing right eye leaving a trail of neon orange light in the dim light of the room.
Without thinking, Sans moved forward, throwing his arms around the taller skeleton's neck in what passed as a hug. Tears, illuminated by the icy-blue glow of his left eye, rolled down his cheeks as he desperately tried to get his brother back.
Papyrus fought against Sans's embrace at first, but he gradually began to realize what was going on. Slowly, he felt the beast's grip on his mind begin to loosen. Control was just within his grasp.
In that moment, the mental trap unlocked itself, allowing Papyrus to take full command of his body. The violent, crazed gleam in his eye faded, and a friendly light replaced it. He returned the hug, a smile spreading across his face.
Sans pulled back, looking his brother in the eyes. "Papyrruss?"
The taller skeleton nodded. "That's right, brother. I'm back."
Sans threw himself back into Papyrus's embrace, relieved that his brother had regained control. "Thank god! I wass afrraid I would losse you!"
Papyrus chuckled, resting his chin on Sans's forehead. "I was afraid I'd lose myself too. Gosh, I don't even know what happened! All I know is that I finished transforming, and I couldn't get ahold of myself!"
The lights in Sans's eyes grew dull. "I'll exxplain it to you laterr. Forr now, let'ss jusst get outta herre."
"Agreed. This place gives me the creeps!" Papyrus shuddered as he glanced around the room. "There's an exit over there."
Sans followed his gaze, spotting a large metal door across the room. "Will that even open? It lookss a bit rrussted..."
Papyrus lit up. "Don't worry, brother! We'll find a way! Nyeh!" He bounded over to the door, pausing for a moment to study it. "You're right, it does look a bit rusty. But it's nothing a little fire-power can't fix!"
Sans grinned, following after his brother, though he did so calmly, unlike Papyrus. He stood by his side, looking up to him. It was almost like the height difference between them in their regular forms hadn't changed at all.
Papyrus stretched in an almost cat-like manner, his joints popping. Sans winced at the painful memory the sound brought, but said nothing as Papyrus charged up another blast attack, carefully aiming it at the door before firing, blasting it off its hinges.
The two brothers crept towards the vacant doorway, finding that an empty hallway lurked outside the door. They looked at each other before going out, trotting through the darkness for what felt like forever before the ground began to slope upwards, leading to the exit.
Papyrus readied himself to blast down the door, but Sans stopped him. "Let me handle thiss one. I don't think blassting it iss the way to go."
Sans approached the door, his tail flicking as he stood up on his back legs, pushing against the metal surface with his front limbs. Using all his strength, he managed to throw it open, revealing a peaceful night sky beyond.
The two skeletal creatures stepped out into the open, the gentle winter breeze bringing a fresh sense of relief to both of them.
   They had survived.
   And they'd done it together.

How was that one? Something different, right? How often do you read these things and have BOTH of these guys going at the exact same time?
