Desperate Times, Desperate Measures

Alright, not a request (shocking, I know), but I really wanted to make this into a oneshot.
This is based on a roleplay I had with
-Sakura_Apuru- , which involved some creatures they created. They are called Usakais, and they're awesome! You should go check them out, just so you're in the know. ;3
Also, this takes place in a universe where Sans and Papy aren't the only ones who shift. In other words, this'll involve one other monster who has the ability to change forms, and that is Undyne. I have put an image of Undyne's beast form above, for those who want to know what she looks like (image drawn by myself).
The appearances of all the Usakais included in this oneshot are pictured below (drawn by above mentioned user).

The 5th Usakai will not be used in this story (as much as I want to include her, because I DESIGNED HER AHH—), since she was not in this scene of the roleplay. And I also realized that the last one doesn't have the number on it. That is number 3 lol.
These guys will be referred to by their numbers, just to make things easier on my writing.
One more thing: Sans is starting this one in partial-blaster form. Just so ya know. :P
   Anyway, enjoy the oneshot! :3
*************************************************

The group of monsters approached the King's castle, bringing along with them a large cage with an aggressive, reptilian creature contained inside.
Sans opened his eyes, finally waking up after falling asleep while his brother carried him throughout the journey from the Lab to here. He had to admit, Papyrus sure made life easier when he was shifted. Not that this was what he always wanted, but it was still nice every once in awhile.
He glanced back over his shoulder, his left eye flashing light blue for a split second. Dear god, he hoped the other Usakais didn't catch up to them.
He anxiously fiddled with the syringe in the pocket of his borrowed lab coat, praying that he wouldn't have to use it. He would only use it as a last resort. He didn't like having to rely on Determination to kick himself into blaster mode, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
The skeleton was aroused from his thoughts by the sound of the castle door opening. Standing in the doorway was none other than King Asgore himself. "Hello Alphys." He glanced over at the monster behind her and nodded his head. "Undyne. What do you two need?"
Usakai 2 dipped his head in an attempt at a bow, showing his respect for the goat monster. Undyne stood up straighter, making herself look a bit more presentable, despite her ragged looks. "We have something we need to inform you of. But we should probably go inside first. It's not safe to be out here at the moment." The fish monster looked over her shoulder, her eyes narrowed.
"Oh! Well of course! Come on in!" Asgore took a step to the side, signaling for the group to follow him.
Alphys wheeled the kennel inside, the creature inside it snarling and hissing, infuriated by the fact that she was being transported from place to place against her will. 2 stuck closer to Undyne, his head held low, clearly intimidated by the king.
Undyne's gaze flickered to the orange and gray reptilian creature, noticing his hesitation. She grinned and nudged him gently with her shoulder. "Hey, punk. Don't worry about him. He's not really a scary guy. You can relax."
2 looked behind him, then back at the fish monster, before finally relaxing. Undyne suddenly perked up at the sound of a faint screech in the distance, presumably from another Usakai.
The creature in the kennel barked, as if trying to threaten all the monsters around her. Asgore glanced sideways at the cage, wondering what could be inside. Papyrus ran up beside Undyne, trying to keep pace with her.
The king shut the door once everyone was inside. "What was it that you were going to tell me?"
2's gaze locked onto the kennel, a hint of doubt shining in his light blue eyes. He hoped she didn't get out. If she did, he knew that he couldn't hold her off for long. Undyne briefly followed the reptile's gaze before focusing back on Asgore.
"Well, there are several creatures that must have been released down here by someone, and they are tracking down and killing monsters," The fish monster replied, her expression grim.
Asgore frowned, running a paw through his beard. "Have there been any casualties?"
Undyne glanced at Sans, who's eye sockets went blank at the memory of Lucy, an innocent Snowdin resident who was mercilessly slaughtered by the Usakais. "Only one that we know of, your Majesty."
"W-We were a-able to c-capture one! W-We have her r-right here!" Alphys slowly began to pull the towel off the kennel, which hid the creature from the outside world. "Th-They're called U-Usakai Projects. W-We believe there are s-six."
The scientist handed the king a collar, which she had taken off the captive Usakai.
Sans, more alert than he had been a few moments ago, added to the conversation. "I've seen all the others. There's a blue one in Waterfall somewhere, a yellow one and a red one back in Snowdin last I saw, and there was a green one that tried to attack us in the Lab. Plus, there's this purple one we caught, which is number 6, and the orange one, but he's friendly."
Asgore ran his claw along the golden engraving on the inside of the collar. "How long have they been here? And how has this not come to my attention yet?"
2 purred as Alphys took the towel completely off the kennel, the captive Usakai inside hissing, her pupils dilating as she scurried into the corner of the cage.
Sans shrugged. "No idea. They literally just showed up. Probably came in through the Ruins. There's no way in hell they coulda gotten through the Barrier." He dropped down from his brother's back, landing on his feet with a soft this, his claws clicking against the floor.
Asgore hummed, crouching down next to the kennel and staring at the reptilian creature in slight awe. She snapped at the goat monster, hissing aggressively. 2 came up behind the king, clicking to his sister in an attempt to calm her down.
Sans's gaze trailed to his misshapen feet, his expression blank. Sora climbed down from Papyrus's ribcage (which was how she got around when either of the bros were in their blaster forms), dropping to the floor and scurrying over to Sans, throwing her arms around his neck.
2's tail flicked side to side anxiously as 6 stood up, arching her back while trying to make herself appear larger. Asgore finally stood up and sighed. "I would like to get the others captured. I don't want any more monsters dying. That disease was bad enough on Monsterkind."
Undyne visibly twitched at the mention of the sickness that had granted her the ability to shift forms. Sure, it had turned out to be a blessing in disguise, but it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience at first.
"I will see to it that it gets done."
"Hey, so how am I not dead yet?" Sans asked suddenly, catching everyone off guard. "I was bitten by those things so many times I can't even count..."
The group turned to look at the skeleton, who was staring off into nothing, his eyes narrowed as though he were extremely focused on something else.
Alphys was first to respond. "U-Uhh... Well, b-based on your th-theory about their v-venom, it only w-works if it's inside a b-bloodstream... A-And the only way for it t-to get into the bloodstream of a s-skeleton would be through a, uh, fracture or a b-break in the bone... S-So maybe you have a s-slight i-immunity to it, since it's harder for the v-venom to actually get into your s-system?"
He appeared thoughtful for a moment. "Makes sense. So as long as there's no break, I'm good..."
2 suddenly sat up straight, his attention focused on the entrance. Faint barking could be heard from the other side of the door, but it was unlikely that the other Usakais were actually there. However, they were still definitely close.
Sans's gaze snapped up, his left eye flashing ice-blue as he stuffed his hand into his pocket, grabbing ahold of the syringe, but not pulling it out just yet. Papyrus turned his head to look at the door, a low growl rumbling deep within his throat.
6 barked, and everything went silent for a moment. But then, another bark answered hers, the sound coming from behind the door, accompanied by several scratching sounds.
"Th-They're here... B-But how d-did they...?" Alphys whispered, the color draining from her face as pure horror overtook her.
"Who's here? The other creatures?" Asgore asked, his expression worried.
Sans narrowed his eyes, his teeth bared as his gaze fixated on the door. Sora chirped, hiding behind the skeleton and clinging to his lab coat. The scratching continued, as did the muffled barks and screeches of the Usakais on the other side. 6 butted the cage with her head, trying to break free as 2 barked weakly at the door.
Sans kept his attention focused on the door as he shoved Sora back with one hand. "Go back with Papyrus. Now."
The dragon squeaked in complaint before finally obeying, rushing over to the tall skeletal beast and scurrying up his leg and into his expanded ribcage. Everything fell silent once more, before suddenly...
BANG!
BANG!
Two continuous thuds against the door sounded, one after the other. It was Usakais 1 and 4, as they were the only ones with skulls thick enough to be able to bust through doors. It was obvious that they weren't the only two there, as a third Usakai, number 3, started dragging his claws down the door, screeching as he did so.
6 grabbed the bars of her cage in her mouth and began violently tugging backwards, trying to break it. 2, too shaken to do anything, just stood there, his tail curled around his body as a weak form of defense.
Sans gripped the syringe tighter, pulling it closer to the edge of his pocket, ready to pull it out at a moment's notice.
Undyne turned to look at the king for a brief instant. "Ya might wanna find cover. These things are literal killing machines."
Asgore nodded in response, speed-walking out of the room and motioning for the others to follow. Alphys scurried after the king, pushing the kennel in front of her as she fled the scene.
It wasn't long before a loud cracking sound could be heard, a small crack becoming visible in the door. Sans flinched, his tail flicking out behind him. "Ya might wanna get outta here, Undyne. These things'll kill you."
The fish monster narrowed her eyes before nodding her head reluctantly. "Fair enough. I'll see ya on the other side, punk. Don't get too beat up, okay?"
Sans sighed as she ran off in the direction of the group, leaving him alone with 2. "No promises..."
2 paced next to the skeleton, gaining a wide stance, his tail snaking behind him. The crack in the door continued to widen, until the intruders could be seen on the other side. Gray flesh and colored manes confirmed that the creature's identities were indeed Usakais, but it was still difficult to tell what exactly what was going on.
Sans lowered his head, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. The Usakais had stopped head butting the door and instead started clawing at the small hole that they'd created.
The scratching continued for several minutes, until 1 grew impatient, backing away from the door and getting a running start at it, leaping forward and bursting right through it, landing in a somersault-like style.
2 growled softly, taking a step back as Sans sprung backwards as well, his eyes snapping open. The skeleton pulled the DT-filled syringe out from his pocket, quickly yanking off the cap that kept the needle from stabbing him and tossing it aside as he began to roll up the sleeve of his lab coat, his left eye blazing.
1 lifted his head, shaking it a bit and recollecting himself. 3 and 4 followed close behind, snarling aggressively as they went to stand behind their brother. 1 and 3's eyes had turned a dark maroon color, while 4's eyes remained their usual colors; green and pink. 2 barked at them, his back arched and his once-smooth neck fluff bristling up.
"Okay... Here goes..." Sans murmured, closing his eyes once more and somehow managing to remain calm as he suddenly jabbed the needle into his arm, wincing as he did so.
The skeleton gritted his teeth as he injected the Determination into his system, collapsing to the floor once it was done. He dropped the syringe, causing it to shatter.
2's gaze snapped to Sans as he heard the shattering sound, jumping a little at the sudden noise. He began walking slowly towards the skeleton, his eyes fixated on his siblings until he reached Sans's side. The Usakai nudged him gently with his snout, checking to see if he was okay.
4 snarled, moving in front of her two brothers as she crept towards Sans and 2. 1 and 3 spread out on either side of their sister, making a "V" formation.
Almost immediately, the effects of the Determination began to take its toll on Sans, who was barely able to stay quiet in that moment. He somehow managed to choke down a cry of agony as the searing pain flared up to an almost unbearable level.
The skeleton's breathing became frantic as he dug his claws into the ground, trying to keep himself in a somewhat upright position.
The Usakais continued to advance, the group spreading apart and circling the pair. 2 growled lowly at them, his orange colors brightening up as he glared at his siblings. The other Usakais barked and screeched back at him, the circle getting smaller and smaller with each step they took.
Sans looked up, his eyes glazed over slightly. Acting upon instinct, he tried to stand up and face the threat, but he couldn't seem to find his balance. After a few pitiful attempts to stand, he gave up and instead chose to focus on the task at hand, which was to try and get the transformation done as quickly as possible.
2 glanced at the monster, making sure he was okay. But as he turned his attention away from 4, she took the opportunity to make a move, lunging forward and grabbing ahold of 2's collar with her mouth.
She tugged him backwards, throwing him onto the ground a short distance away before calling to her brothers to take care of him. 1 and 3 wasted no time in launching their attack on 2, the three boys scrambling off to the side while 2 desperately fought for his life.
4 silently turned to face Sans, slowly beginning to creep towards him. She idly licked where her tusk was missing, her eyes remaining fixated on the skeleton.
Sans's gaze locked onto hers, his eye sockets going wide as he stared up at her. He quickly scrambled backward, trying to get away just long enough to finish what he'd initiated. He barely managed to get a short distance away before the horrible, searing pain of the Determination overtook him once more, forcing him to stop.
The skeleton tried to hold back a scream of anguish, but failed miserably. He cringed as he heard the all-too-familiar sound of bones cracking, alerting him that the changes were beginning.
He quietly mumbled something in a strange language; something not spoken by any other monster besides skeletons. "❄♒︎♓︎💧 ✋💧 ✋❄📬︎ ☠⚐ ❄◆︎❒︎■︎♓︎■︎☝ 👌♋︎♍︎😐 ☠□︎♦📬︎"
4 continued to advance, stopping only a short distance away from the skeletal monster. Her stance, oddly enough, didn't seem aggressive, even though her back was arched.
Maybe she wasn't as hostile or bloodthirsty as her brothers...
Or maybe it was all an act.
Waiting for that perfect opportunity when Sans finally let his guard down. When he was distracted enough for her to take advantage of his obvious vulnerability.
Sans continued to mumble, his left eye socket completely flooded with ice-blue light as he clutched at his skull. "👍□︎❍︎☜ ⚐■︎💧♋︎■︎💧📬︎ ✡□︎✞ 🙂◆︎⬧︎❄ ☝□︎⧫︎⧫︎✌ ♦♏︎♋︎⧫︎♒︎♏︎☼ ✋❄📬"
4 tilted her head in confusion, making an attempt at mimicking the mysterious language in her own animalistic tone. But she soon determined that it didn't sound all that great, so she simply dropped it and returned her focus to the monster, growling softly.
The three other Usakais were still off fighting on the side, with 2 luckily not being injured too badly just yet.
Sans glanced up at 4, trying to hold her gaze so he had something to think about other than the sheer amount of unbearable agony he was in.
After a few moments, however, he collapsed once more, not getting back up this time. The pain was too much for him to handle. He was used to the usual suffering that accompanied a transformation, but to have it induced by something as harmful as Determination brought on a whole new meaning of torture.
He began to shudder uncontrollably as he drew his knees up to his face, curling up into a ball and covering his mouth with the sleeves of his lab coat in a desperate attempt to muffle his increasingly loud wails of anguish.
4 took a step back, taking a moment to consider her options. This could be the perfect opportunity for her to strike.
She looked over at her brothers, before turning back to the skeleton, crawling towards him cautiously, but with a slight hint of aggression this time.
Sans didn't have the mental stability to notice her. He hardly even knew she was there anymore. He'd completely lost awareness of the world around him, so focused on the burning pain that was radiating throughout his body to even care that 4 was so close.
The Usakai, noticing the monster's lack of attention towards her, stopped crawling and suddenly leapt forward onto the skeleton's back, trying to pin him down with her front pair of limbs. She nipped at his lab coat, trying to get through it so she could bite him.
Sans's eyes abruptly snapped open as he somehow managed to fight against 4, flipping over onto his back and kicking her in the face with all the strength he could muster. The action caused the lab coat to be completely torn in half, but he could care less about it.
4 screeched as the skeleton's clawed feet struck her, the reptilian creature stumbling backwards while tossing her head. She closed her eyes for a few moments, taking a couple of deep breaths before opening her eyes once more.
4 barked at him before quickly advancing towards him in a zig-zag motion. Sans sprung to his feet, barely able to hold the upright stance for a couple seconds before he dropped down to all fours, which suddenly seemed so much more natural to him.
The Usakai jumped forward, front limbs outstretched as she tried to tackle him. The skeleton darted underneath her before she could get to him, ignoring the sharp stab of pain that shot through his body as he did so.
But he wasn't able to fight it long. Shortly after he made his move, he collapsed back to the ground, crying out in anguish once more as his spine began to distend, the sound of bones cracking causing the skeleton to cringe.
Suddenly, he picked up on the faint, yet distinct sound of heavy footsteps approaching. He lifted his head wearily, just before none other than his brother came rushing in, barreling into 4 and knocking her aside.
The Usakai tumbled to the side, quickly regaining her footing and standing back up in a crouched position, snarling angrily. Her gaze darted between the two skeletons, trying to analyze their body language so she could form a new tactic.
Papyrus glanced back at his brother, a determined gleam in his glowing orange eyes. "Don't worry, brother. I've got your back." He turned back to 4, standing his ground.
Sans grinned weakly before finally giving in to what he'd been forced to hold back. He somehow managed to remain calm as the transformation began to truly take its hold, his form rapidly beginning to change.
4 growled, breathing heavily before pushing off the ground with her front limbs and standing up on her hind legs, barely able to make level eye contact with the skeletal beast. Intimidation was usually the first thing she tried when fighting, and if it didn't work, she resorted to violence.
Papyrus tried his best to ignore the chilling sounds of his brother's transformation and tried instead to keep his attention on 4.
Sans's screams of pain began to turn into growls, his voice gradually growing deeper and more animalistic with each cry of agony that escaped him.
He toned out the fight that was going on all around him, his ability to focus waning as he began to lose control of himself. But maybe that was what he needed. A little uncontrolled rage was nice every once in awhile. Especially in a situation like this.
The once-smaller skeleton could feel his body beginning to draw on a mass that it didn't normally have as his bones began to distend and thicken all at once. Large spikes burst through what remained of his tattered lab coat, specifically from his shoulder blades, elbows, and down the length of his spine.
The sound of bones cracking and fabric tearing seemed to drown out his agonized screams as the transformation began to slow down.
He closed his eyes, letting the beast take over as his own consciousness faded to the back of his mind, all while the changes finally came to an end.
Sans remained lying on the floor for a few minutes, taking a moment to rest and regain his strength while he readjusted to the feeling of his alternate form.
Meanwhile, Papyrus had managed to keep 4 distracted, holding his ground and keeping his gaze locked onto hers, trying like hell not to show fear.
After a few moments, Sans shakily rose to his feet, his gaze dreary as he glanced at 4. The Usakai had crept towards Papyrus, and she was standing there waiting impatiently for someone to strike first, tapping her claws against the ground idly as she did so.
Papyrus snarled, taking a step forward, his tail flicking out behind him like a whip. 4 mirrored his actions, her gaze flickering between the two skeletons as she growled.
Sans slunk over to his brother's side, keeping low to the ground with his stare fixated to 4. Papyrus glances at him, slightly unnerved by the slight feral gleam in the smaller beast's glowing blue eyes.
4 screeched at the brothers, analyzing the situation one last time. She knew that if she attacked one, the other would be quick to fight back.
She backed away uncertainly, unsure of what the best action was. She didn't know how strong either of the skeletons were. She had no idea about how they'd respond to an attack, or even how fast they'd be to react.
Sans scraped his claws against the floor impatiently, much like a bull about to charge. He roared and tossed his head, his ice-blue eyes leaving trails of cyan light in the dim light of the room.
4 lowered her head and barked twice. It wasn't long before one of her brothers responded.
1 crept up next to his sister, panting heavily. He was covered in scratches and bite marks, which were leaking an almost neon-blue liquid (presumably blood), but despite his injuries, he was down for another fight.
Papyrus kept his gaze locked onto 4, who hissed and snapped at the taller creature in response, causing him to flinch back instinctively. 1 screeched at Sans before walking up to the brothers, his head held high and his stance aggressive. 4 followed with a slower pace, her head lowered.
Sans moved in front of Papyrus, as if shielding him from the incoming threats. The taller skeleton gave him an annoyed look before he murmured something to him in the same strange language Sans had used not too long ago.
"💧♋︎■︎💧 ✋ 👍♋︎☠ ☞♏︎■︎👎 ☞□︎☼ 💣⍓︎⬧︎♏︎●︎☞📬︎ ❄♒︎♏︎❒︎♏︎💧 ☠⚐ ☠♏︎♏︎👎 ❄⚐ ◘❒︎□︎⧫︎♏︎♍︎❄ 💣☜📬︎"
Sans hesitated for a moment before backing away, turning his gaze to 1. The Usakai screeched at him again, lowering his head so that his neck and spine were aligned. 4 clicked quietly to her brother, but kept her attention focused on Papyrus.
The taller skeleton took a step back, anxiously awaiting 4's next move. Sans flashed 1 a defiant look, as if challenging him. The Usakai snorted, his mane of dark red fur bristling.
4 advanced slowly, oddly silent. The only sounds that came from her were her claws tapping against the floor and her own breathing.
Sans's gaze flickered between the two Usakais, unsure of which one he should be more wary of. He hadn't had much interaction with 4, but he knew from experience that 1 was very powerful.
1 was first to lose his patience, nearly running towards them in a head butting position. Sans lowered his skull and darted forward, shielding his brother and retaliating to the attacking Usakai.
1 was quick to start biting at Sans's wrists and forearms as the skeletal beast snarled and lashed out blindly, trying to slash at 1 with his claws. 4 looked up at Papyrus, a cold, emotionless glint in her eyes, unlike her brother's, which gleamed with confidence and rage, and possibly a hint of bloodlust as well.
4 sneaked up towards Papyrus while Sans was distracted, her gaze piercing through him. She didn't attack, nor did she make a single noise. She just stood there and stared at him.
Meanwhile, 1 was solely focused on his fight with Sans, darting to the side to dodge his attacks. Sans narrowed his eyes, the sockets flooding with icy-blue light as he turned his full attention towards defending his brother.
The smaller skeleton reared up, letting out a roar that shook the ground with the power of his voice as he prepared to slam his clawed hands down on top of 1.
1 glanced up at the beast, his eyes going wide as he froze in place. 4's gaze darted to him and she barked, telling him to get out of the way. Papyrus, alerted by 4's bark, turned around frantically to look at his brother, his eyes suddenly going wide.
6, who was able to see the fight from where she was, screeched at him desperately, relaying 4's message once more, just as Sans threw all his weight down on top of 1, using every ounce of strength he could muster.
   CRACK!
1 cried out in a high-pitched tone as the skeletal creature came down on him, his lower spine and hip bones snapping under the pressure.
Even with his other four limbs still functional, he certainly wouldn't be able to walk again if he miraculously managed to survive. His middle pair of legs were too weak to support his full body weight.
The downed Usakai just laid there, thin but rapid breaths escaping him as he weakly clawed at the floor. Sans stood just to the side of the injured creature, a blank, emotionless expression on his face as he stared vacantly ahead, his breath rumbling in his throat.
Papyrus shuddered, and, despite the amount of faith he had in his brother, he found himself taking a step back, his glowing neon-orange eyes glinting with fear.
4 approached her brother, laying down next to him and resting her head on his neck. 3, finally abandoning his fight with 2, followed her, clicking gently to his fallen brother. He laid down next to him as well, trying to comfort him in his final moments.
Sans's expression remained ice-cold for a few moments longer before it gradually softened, the feral gleam in his eyes quickly being replaced by a look of pure horror. He backed away slowly, his eyes wide. Papyrus rumbled softly to his brother, his eyes going dark with concern.
It wasn't long before 1 finally succumbed to his injuries and died. 4 eventually stood up and looked over at Sans, remaining silent and still. Sans froze as his gaze locked onto hers, while Papyrus averted his gaze, his expression almost fearful.
4 held the skeletal beast's stare for a moment longer before turning her head and making her way towards the door, with 3 following close behind. 4 growled faintly, but it wasn't out of aggression.
Sans's tail drooped, and he bowed his head, ashamed of his actions. He'd never meant to kill the Usakai; he was just defending his brother, as well as himself. But despite everything, he still felt guilty for what he'd done.
Papyrus inched slowly towards Sans, leaning into him slightly in an attempt to comfort him. 4 crawled through the hole in the door without hesitation, but 3 stopped. He glanced back at his deceased brother one final time before turning away and hopping through the door after his sister.
Sans's gaze slowly trailed back to the corpse of the Usakai he'd murdered, his eyes suddenly going wide. Staring down at the lifeless corpse brought back the memory of someone else he'd killed mercilessly long ago, back when he was a child growing up in the True Labs.
6 screeched as she began to claw and bite at the bars of her kennel, but the tone of her voice was different than it had been before. They were less aggressive, and there was a mixture of anger and sadness behind them.
2 walked over to the skeleton brothers, a bruise forming along the side of his face. He looked at the body of his deceased brother before looking up at Sans. The skeleton rumbled softly, his eyes growing full as he looked away guiltily.
The battle had been won; at least, for now.
Yet Sans did not feel as though he'd been victorious. He hated violence; even when it was necessary.  It frightened him to think about what he was capable of.
He sighed, leaning into his brother and closing his eyes. He couldn't go back now. What was done is done. There was no way to reverse it.

No matter how hard he tried.

Holy frick! That was a long one, huh?
