"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity..." Edgar Allen Poe
Adam sat in the interview room, Officer Shaw was seated across from him and trying his best lure him into a false sense of security. Once it became evident that Adam wasn't in a talkative mood, Shaw signaled someone from behind the two-way glass mirror.
Adam's heart raced for one split second he thought that Lily had entered the room; the likeness of the female officer was so strong that he opened his mouth to say her name before his weary brain made the connection.
The officer placed a folder in Shaw's nicotine stained fingers and left without speaking. All the while Shaw was watching Adam's body language like he was a living piece of art.
Shaw smiled revealing his yellowed teeth as Adam cleared his throat. He held the folder in one hand and spoke again.
"Let me try this again... Why did you murder her?"
Adam sighed and stared at the folder in Shaw's hands.
"The dogs killed her not me..." He spat.
Shaw shook his head and glared at him.
"Technicalities..."
Adam clenched his jaw and spoke this time his tone had a cutting quality to it.
"How long have you been a cop?"
Shaw stared at him uncertain. Adam had been silent for hours now, and now he was talking, being a wise arse would only silence him once more. Shaw shook his head and decided to answer him just to keep him talking.
"Twelve years..."
Adam nodded and sighed.
"In that time have you had many criminal masterminds who used a pack of dogs to kill their victims...?" He asked once more with hostility.
Shaw ignored the jibe he was already in hot water with his chief for not reading Adam his Miranda rights. Lucky for him the savage nature of the crime scene affected the chief just as much as it had for him.
"I still don't understand why I'm here being questioned like this..." Adam spat.
Shaw spoke but masked his hatred for Adam.
"Normally you wouldn't be but let's say you have a habit of being around dead bodies lately..."
Adam stared at the folder once more before he spoke.
"I'm the victim here... I found the woman I loved torn apart for fuck's sake..."
Shaw clenched his jaw. So he was still playing the victim... Fine.
Shaw opened the folder and began to slide photograph after photograph across the table. Each time Adam's hands trembled.
Shaw spoke.
"A car accident. Acute Renal failure. Suicide. Stroke. And now this. Coincidence or foul play? These cases alone are not considered suspect when they are brought together they paint a very different picture."
Adam stared at each post mortem photograph; each filled him to the core with rage. Every death was his fault. All of this had happened because he had taken his eyes from the wheel.
Adam lifted his teary eyes from the images and glared at Shaw.
"I didn't do it!!!" He screamed and tried to stand. The handcuffs held him in place. Shaw grinned at the display and spoke; as he spoke she appeared from the wall behind him.
Adam watched as Rose walked through the wall, a black ooze stained the wall where she had walked through. She smiled at Adam. For once he was reminded of the Rose that he had loved. She didn't appear sinister in the slightest. His heart pounded in his chest and he smiled at the sight of her.
Rose slowly turned to look at Shaw, the moment she read his aggressive body language was the same moment that her eyes shone with amber light and her lips pursed in rage.
Adam tried to call out to her to tell her to stop but she sneered and hissed at him and placed both her putrid hands on Shaw's cheeks and sharply twisted to the left.
Shaw's neck violently snapped his body fell out of his chair as the light in his eyes faded.
"I'll be back in an hour. Until then I'm leaving you alone with these..." Shaw laughed.
Adam blinked and looked around in a dazed confusion. He didn't fully register what was happening but knew the vision was another symptom of his encroaching madness.
Doubt settled into his mind. Maybe Shaw was right.
Maybe everything that he had witnessed lately was nothing more than a delusion. Maybe he really was a psychopath. A killer who liked to play the victim.
Adam stared down at the photographs and wept.
He didn't know how long he had been left with only the company of those photographs. All he knew was that if he had to look at them any longer he would be driven closer to insanity.
The door opened. Adam turned to see Shaw standing in the doorway. He looked different, almost like a scolded child. When he spoke Adam understood fully.
"Your lawyer wishes to speak with you privately..." He muttered and exited the room.
Adam's jaw dropped when he saw who entered the room.
The boy walked into the room and grinned at him, he saw the photographs and glared at the two-way glass before he quickly gathered them and returned them to the folder.
"You...?" Adam spoke with uncertainty.
The boy sat opposite him and smiled. He pointed at the two way glass with his thumb and made a shushing gesture with his other hand.
Adam's gaze was drawn to whatever the boy wanted him to see and he laughed before quickly coughing to mask his amusement.
Reflected in the glass was the visage of Adam seated opposite a man with short black hair, glasses and a swanky suit. In other words the very epitome of what one would expect to see in a standard stereotype of a lawyer.
The boys oceanic blue eyes remained fixed on Adam and he spoke.
"The police chief would like to express his sincerest apology over your wrongful arrest and has asked me to ask whether you would like to bring charges for misconduct against Officer Shaw."
Adam stared at the boy and back at the two-way glass, he was beyond confused but he understood a get out clause when he saw one.
"That's okay... tell them I won't be taking any further action..."
The boy's eyes narrowed as if he was silently asking him if he was sure.
He spoke.
"And Shaw?"
"He's a shitty excuse for a cop... but no I won't be taking any further action."
The boy nodded and retrieved a key from his pocket. He unlocked Adam's handcuffs and walked over towards the door.
"Let's get you out of here then..."
Adam stared at the two-way glass and swore he could feel the wrath from Shaw from here. He smiled, shook his head and left the room with the boy.
Adam shielded his eyes from the bright rays of the summer sun and walked down the steps. The boy had opened the door for him and was behind him. Adam made it to the bottom of the stone steps and was greeted by silence. He turned around and noticed that the boy was nowhere to be seen.
He felt as if someone was standing behind him. Adam turned on his feet and fell backward with fear. Rose was stood before him and she smiled.
She reached for his hand lovingly, Adam took a step backward and her amber eyes bore into his own. Rose screamed, Adam fell to the floor and held his hands over his ears. Blood was trickling from his hands. The scream stopped, the pain in his head stopped and Adam looked up to see her form be carried away by the wind.
Her voice spoke from the deepest corner of his mind. But he heard it as clear as day.
"Do you still love me?" She asked with laughter.
