5. Marina's Graduation Day
Marina looks at herself in the mirror as today is her final day of high school...Graduation Day.
Marina couldn't wait to celebrate with her family during the day and with the gargoyles at night. But it wouldn't be long before Elisa had to work the night shift, but luckily the trio had a surprise for Marina and looked forward to today.
As Marina got ready for her graduation, she looked at the tiara she had received from Prom and thought about Brooklyn's words. " From now on you're Marina Maza, Princess of New York." Marina couldn't stop smiling and felt her cheeks burning up.
"*Knock, Knock*"
" Come in." Marina said as she put her tiara down to see Elisa coming in.
" Hey, there she is. Ready to take on as a graduate?"
" More than ready. You know I wish they could be there." Marina wanted her friends to see her graduate.
" Don't worry Dad will record everything so they can watch you. I know it won't be the same, but once you grab that diploma, you are heading to your future."
" I wish I knew what I wanted to do. You knew what you wanted when you were my age."
" Yes, but you have time to think about what you want to do. Don't pressure yourself so much. Now let's get you in your cap and gown, and head over to your school."
Marina nodded her head as she put on her cap and gown and looked at herself in the mirror for the last time as the next chapter of her life would start tomorrow.
Everyone had arrived at the high school and friends and family were taking pictures of the graduates.
" There she is!" Mrs. Maza said as she came over to Marina and hugged her daughter happily. " I'm so proud of you."
" Thank you, Mom. I can't believe this is finally happening." Marina said as she looked around as she was ready to graduate. The heat from outside started to get worse. everyone tries to cool off from inside the gym, but then the power shuts down since everyone in the city is using their air conditioners.
" Oh no, how long is the power going to be down?" Marina asked.
" I just talked to the janitor, he said it's going to be hours since most of the city has their electricity off as well. But I'm gonna see if I can help out to see if can help to get it up and running. I shouldn't be long, I would say at least an hour top. I'll be back." Derek said as he headed out to go to fix the generator.
But that hour turned out to be four hours and it was nighttime, which means...
The gargoyles wake up from their sleep and head over to Elisa's apartment, but once they get there the place is empty.
" Where's all the decorations? And the food?" Broadway asked as he didn't understand what was going on.
" I don't know, do you think the ceremony ran late? I mean this heat wave sure is bad." Brooklyn said as he thought about checking out the ceremony.
"Let's leave the presents here, and head over to the school to see what's going on." Lexington said as he headed inside, and put his gift on the table as the others followed. Everyone except Bronx left the apartment and headed over to the school. It only took the gargoyles a few minutes to arrive at the school to see everyone was still there.
" I wonder what happened." Lexington asked.
"Let us worry about that later, we're gonna watch Marina graduate from high school." Brooklyn said as everyone agreed and sat down to see everyone taking pictures as the ceremony started. The students came out one at a time as their family and friends cheered for the graduates.
" Look there's Marina." Broadway said as he pointed out they all heard Marina's family cheering for her then she sat down at her seat.
After a while, the principal gave his opening speech, and the valedictorian, and also some of the students were given awards for honor roll, Marina was one of the students who got her award and sat back down at her seat as the ceremony continued.
Once everything was finished it was time for the students to grab their diplomas. Each student went up to the stage and took their diploma, took the tassel, and put it on the other side of their cap. Marina could feel her heart racing as she was up next as this is her big moment.
" Marina Maza!" The principal tells the crowd as everyone in the audience claps for Marina.
Marina got up on the stage and walked on as she grabbed her diploma, shook everyone's hands, and put her tassel on the left side as she finally did it. She heard her family cheer for her in the crowd as Marina couldn't help but smile and headed back to her seat.
As minutes pass by all the students have gotten their diplomas and are ready for the final speech.
" To all of these students, I wish the best of luck to them, and the future guide them to the person they are meant to be. I'm happy to announce this year's graduating class of 1995." The principal said as everyone cheered as the students tossed their caps in the air as graduation was finally over and ready for the future.
The gargoyles watched the whole ceremony and were very proud of Marina for her hard work at school.
Once everyone heads outside Marina looks around to find her family, but can't find them right away something catches her eye as she sees some figures flying in the sky which makes her smile happily even more.
" Marina!" Elisa called her out and Marina came over to her family and hugged every one of them.
" I'm so proud of you honey." Peter said.
" Thank you, Daddy."
" I'm sorry your graduation party didn't go as well as planned since we're late to them." Beth said as she wanted to do something.
" Don't worry we can try again tomorrow." Marina didn't mind waiting another day to spend time with her family.
" Sounds like a plan." Derek said as he looked forward to tomorrow.
Elisa and Marina head back to the apartment to find the gargoyles there.
" Happy Graduation!" The trio said
" Oh my gosh guys, this is wonderful thank you." Marina looked around and saw the decorations put up.
" When we arrived at the school and heard what happened at the school we stayed for the ceremony, which was great and we decided to put up the decorations for you." Lexington said to Elisa and Marina.
" Aww, that's so sweet. Thank you." Marina couldn't ask for better friends.
" It's no problem, how about you open your presents and the three of us have a big surprise for you." Brooklyn said as he could see how Marina was excited about her surprise.
Marina sat down on the couch and started opening her presents.
" This one is from me." Elisa said as Marina unwrapped something very heavy to find her present.
" Aww Elisa this is so sweet. Thank you. I'm gonna put it on my desk so I can look at it every day." Marina said as she placed it on the table carefully so it didn't break. Marina grabbed the next present and it felt a little heavy and wondered what it was and it was from Lexington. " Wow, Lex thank you. How did you know I needed a new one?"
" I saw you trying to fix it and it completely broke down, so I thought you could use a new one."
" Wow, this is awesome. Now I can listen to all my tapes. Thank you."
" You're welcome." Lexington smiled as Marina opened Goliath's present next.
" *Gasp* A 50th Edition of Little Women? Goliath, how did you find this?" Marina asked as she was shocked.
" I have my ways of finding something special." Goliath said as he smiled at Marina.
Marina smiled as she went to the next present and it was from Broadway.
" Aww Broadway this is wonderful." Marina said as she smelled her perfume. " I think I smell jasmine." Marina sprayed lightly on her wrist. " Wow, that smells lovely. Thank you, Broadway."
" You're very welcome Marina. I'm glad you love it." Broadway said as he watched Marina enjoy her present from him.
Marina finds a small box of jewelry and opens it to find pearl earrings from Hudson.
" Oh, Hudson these are beautiful. Thank you so much. I'm gonna put them on." Marina said as she put on her new earrings.
" I knew you would like those Lass, and they look perfect on you." Hudson said as Marina felt bashful.
" Thank you, Hudson. I love them." Marina said as she fixed her hair after putting on her earrings. Marina takes the last present from the table which is from Brooklyn.
Marina felt speechless when she saw the box and once she opened it up to find out it was a music box. Marina started to tear up as she heard the song " Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz.
" Oh, Brooklyn... I love it. This is so beautiful. Thank you so much." Marina said as she closed the lid and put it on the table to make sure it didn't break. " Thank you all so much for everything I couldn't ask for anything more wonderful."
" Just wait until you see the surprise we have in store for you. But you need to wear something warm it's quite cold outside." Brooklyn said.
" I better go change then." Marina said and quickly changed into a warmer outfit.
" Are you guys going to be okay while we're gone?" Marina asked Elisa, Goliath, and Hudson as she was ready to go to her surprise.
" You four have your fun, Bronx and I will be back at the castle." Hudson said.
" Yeah go have fun. Just don't be out too late." Elisa said to them.
" We will." Marina said as she headed outside with the trio and got ready to glide.
Brooklyn takes Marina in his arms and glides through the air as they head over to her surprise. It took a while for them to arrive and make it to Coney Island. The best part it was a Halloween party. It has taken place today since last year on Halloween it rained so badly no one could celebrate it.
" Oh guys this is awesome, and you guys can be out in the open. This is the best surprise ever! I love it. But wait I don't have a costume on. Oh well, I can find a mask or something around here." Marina didn't mind her outfit and just wanted to have fun with her friends.
Everyone had an amazing time. They tried out the food, games, and rides, and even checked out some of the shows. It was a perfect night for all of them. Then the lights went out for some reason and didn't know what was going on until the fireworks started to go off. Everyone in the crowd was cheering for how fantastic the show was.
" This is amazing. Thank you so much for this surprise." Marina said to her friends and started to feel tired.
" You're welcome Marina." Brooklyn said as he watched Marina enjoy the fireworks show.
Marina thought about today and it was perfect. There was no better way to spend time with her friends in the outside world, but she does think about if there was a way for her friends to enjoy themselves as humans, even for a day.
