Chapter 4

Later that night, the blue robot packed his belongings and came to the ticket counter at the train station. Garfield and Odie were with him holding their own bags.

Ticket Counter asked "Roundtrip or one-way?"

Rodney replied "One-way."

Just then, Rodney's parents arrived.

Lydia sighed then said "There you are. I told you I'd find them. It's a mother's instinct."

Herb said "Instinct? Rodney left us a note: "I'm leaving. I'll be at the train station.""

Lydia said "Never mind. Pick up that suitcase. You're coming home right now."

Rodney said "No, Mom. We have to do this. We're going to Robot City tonight."

Garfield continued "And we're gonna get a job."

Rodney said "And I'm gonna help Dad pay back Mr. Gunk."

Lydia said to her husband "Talk to him."

Herb tried to speak "Ro..."

Lydia interrupted "Robot City? You're just a kid."

Rodney said "I'm never gonna be someone here. I wanna be an inventor. I wanna meet Bigweld."

Garfield said "And we wanna be somebody."

Lydia said "You and Rodney are somebody." Lydia then picked up their bags "Somebody who's not getting on that train." Odie and Garfield looked at each other confused then back at Lydia.

Rodney said "Yes, we are."

Lydia said to her husband "Talk to him."

Herb walks over to the ticket counter then told the ticket counter "Three tickets for Robot City."

Lydia asked "Where are you going?"

Herb replied holding the tickets "Not me. them."

Lydia said as Rodney, Garfield, Odie were confused "But..."

Herb said "Rodney, did you know that when I was your age, I wanted to be a musician? I played pretty well too...but my dad was worried I wouldn't be able to make a living." They walked a bit to the train "So, I got refitted to be a dishwasher. Now, I'm not complaining. But I've always said to myself... if I could do it over again, I would follow my dream. You've got greatness in you, Rodney. Never doubt it." Herb gave the three their tickets "You, Garfield, and Odie go to Robot City. You three go meet Bigweld, and you show him your big ideas. And Rodney... never, never give up."

At the train, Lydia gave them their suitcases, then Rodney hugs his mother one last time, leaving the conductor touched.

Conductor said as he was about to cry "All aboard."

Rodney said "Mom."

She lets go of her son and the three enter the train.

Rodney said "I won't let you down, Dad. I'll make you proud. "

Garfield said "Don't worry! We'll keep him safe!" Odie and Garifeld waved.

Rodney closed the door.

Herb said "I know you will."

And so, the train chugs off into the night sky as Rodney's parents watched from below.
