Summer

The last week of school flew by. Steven had terrible grades.

But he still had fun. Connie and him performed their little skit and laughed all the way through it. It didn't matter that kids like Petey gave the two of them death stares all throughout the school day. They were having fun. They were happy.

And isn't that the real goal in life?

Amethyst sure wasn't happy right about now.

She was being chased down an alley way through Beta street, a sniper's gun firmly in her grasp. Not the best situation, of we're being honest here. She was supposed to shoot the kid called Peridot to keep her from building weapons for the Gem gang. Not enough to kill her, no, they wanted her to bring the girl home with them to interrogate her.

Instead, her cousin Jasper was running after her with a revolver pointed straight at her head.

Now she would never hear the end of it from Garnet and Pearl. They thought she couldn't handle this mission on her own.

A gunshot rang through the alley as it just missed Amethyst's ear, a sly plan forming in Amethyst's head. "Nice shot cuz!"

A growl escaped Jasper's lips, a snarl contorting her face into a knot. Powerful legs began pounding against the floor even harder, now focusing only on her running, instead of shooting at the squat girl. The end of the alley was drawing closer, so Amethyst sprinted for it, spinning herself expertly over her heel and careening into the store right next to her, bolting to the back door, and escaping into the alley behind it. She threw herself into the next shop's bathroom, squatting, and catching her breath. The gun was still in her hands, but thankfully the shop she barged into was a restaurant, a bubble tea café, in fact. No one had seen her enter. Jasper was probably still searching the first shop. Now all she had to do was find a place to hide her gun, so she didn't look suspicious.

There were a lot of things she needed to blend in.

So she pulled out her phone to text Steven, who she knew was out from school now.

Then she waited.

As the young boy and his best friend walked into the shop, they looked ridiculous. Connie wore a large floppy straw hat, and Steven was wearing his favorite star shirt, his belly poking out slightly. He held a backpack shaped like a cheeseburger slung across his body.

As they wandered around the shop, Steven called Amethyst's name, until he got the response he needed.

The bathroom door swung open, and a short arm reached out for the two kids.

As soon as the door was shut and locked, Amethyst pulled the black sweatshirt that she had asked for over her head. Flipping the hood up, she carefully tucked every strand of her ghostly lavender hair away.

She shoved the sniper into the Cheeseburger backpack, and handed it back to Steven.

Connie watched in awe.

"W....Was that a" the little girl gulped, eyes widening, "gun?

"Yup." Amethyst shoved the door open. "Coming out?"
