Sand burned his feet as Thomas trudged through the desert. Holding his head down, he tried to keep the blazing sun out of his eyes. His knees buckled with each step threatening to collapse from under him. Looking back, he saw Egypt. He had to keep moving before his taskmaster could find him and bring him back.

"Thomas." A voice called out. Raising his head, Thomas saw a figure of his history teacher. Smiling, he picked up the pace. It was nice to finally see a familiar face. The wind whipped against his bare back. It stung like a hundred bees were stabbing into his back. He pressed forward. He hoped once he reached Mr. Del Mastro, the tear could help him.

Arriving at the dune where the teacher stood, the teen looked around. The teacher was gone. Disappointment rushed through his body, weariness dragged his body down. Falling to his knees, he needed a break. "Thomas," the voice called out once more.

Letting out a puff of hot air, Thomas picked his head up. He smiled as he saw the teacher once more. "Mr. Del Mastro!" He cried as he rose to his feet. Sweat damped his forehead as he forced his legs to move.

"There he is!" A male voice called out to a partner. Forcing his legs to move, Thomas broke into a run. He continued to run till he reached the next spot. He looked around, again not seeing him there. Spotting the teacher, he continued to run. A large dune came into view as ran.

Smiling, a cave had been carved out of the dune. Thomas quickly rushed inside. Voices echoed from outside as his taskmasters appeared. "Thomas," growled a voice. Fear rushed through his body as he looked down into the cave. Nothing was there just darkness. "Thomas," the voice said once more.

Thomas was about to announcer when a hand grabbed his arm. Whirling his head around, he saw the Egyptian he had been working was lifting his arm up. Grunting, Thomas tried to pull away. "Let go of me!" He cried out. The man tightened his grip as the boy struggled.

Pulling on his arm, the man forced him to his feet. He smirked as he pulled him out of the cave. Thomas pulled harder against him. Pain shot through his arm. Tears welled up in his eyes. It felt like the man was about to pull his arm off. He didn't care. All Thomas wanted was to run away. He was bought several days ago by this cruel man.

Echoing through the cave, a roar sounded out. Blasts of air followed by a low growl rushed past them. The man softened his grip. Thomas watched as the man's face was overtaken by fear. Thomas looked back at the cave wondering what was deep within its exterior.

The sand below their feet started to move. The growl started soft then grew louder. The ground beneath their feet started to split apart. Letting go of his arm, the man jumped to the side. Thomas fell forward, hitting the sand with a hard smack.

Looking back, he watched as the ground split open. A beast blasted out of the cracks up towards the sky. Thomas' eyes widened with fear. A dragon soared above his head. Its brown scales glistened in the sunlight as if they were made of pure gold.

Pulling back, Thomas hustled to his feet. The dragon changed direction. Thomas watched as it pulled its wings close to its body to help it descend faster. Thomas turned to ti run. It was too late. Sand flew up around the monster's claws as it landed on the ground. Its wings were opened to soften it's landing.

Opening its maw, the dragon lunged towards the man and his helpers. Grabbing a nearby master, the dragon flicked his head up sending the man flying in the air. Flailing his arms, the man screamed as he hurtled downwards towards the beast.

Pushing on his back hunches, the dragon jumped. Catching the human in its open maw, he clamped down hard. The man's screams were silenced. Blood dripped from the corner of the creature's mouth as he faced the others. Thomas watched as the men spun on the heels and took off. They were screaming like children.

Turning towards Thomas, the dragon approached the teen. "Wh - Who are you?" The teen's voice quivered.

"I am Malchrome." The dragon grumbled in his throat. "Come inside the dune, before they came back."

Nodding, Thomas did as he was told and disappeared inside.
