GAMEOVER
Chapter 3 [9]
~~~~~
"A lab experiment? What kind?"
"A neat one, of course," Jason wiggled his eyebrows, "That little amulet in your hand is a very important device I crafted, something to revolutionize the future!" Jason exclaimed in glee. He spun himself in a circle with arms open wide, there was a hop in his step and wonder in his eyes. Adam was captivated by his gleeful attitude.
Jason balanced on his heels and pointed at Adam, "You see, I designed that amulet to look for specific qualities in the human genome, in order to increase the percent of success. Put it on."
Adam nodded and placed the necklace around his neck.
Beep.
"Whoa! It made a noise!"
"Hmm, you're shocked by that? It should've made a noise the moment it activated."
"I guess I didn't notice, whoops."
"Oh, whatever," Jason waved it off. He jotted down a few notes on his pad before moving to the other side of the room. He opened a few cabinets and looked through several files before pulling out a folder. He walked back and handed the folder to Adam.
"What's this?" Adam opened the folder and pulled out a stapled stack of papers. The words Contract spelled out in bold, giant letters.
"A simple agreement in order for this test to be legal. I'll just need you to fill out the asked information, including first and last name, address, emergency contact, and your Drive link. Also any list of medical problems would be good. Though you probably have none since the necklace wouldn't have activated if you did," Jason laughed.
Adam felt overwhelmed by the swarm of information, "So what would have happened if it didn't accept me?"
"Electrocution."
"What??"
"Nothing, anyways, just quickly read through that. Here," Jason pushed the packet closer to Adam and handed him his pen, "I'll go make preparations while you read that over," Jason waved and skipped away giggling with excitement.
Adam glanced down at the packet and started to read through it curiously. Honestly he couldn't focus on the words or their meaning, he was bubbling with excitement. The only thoughts running through his head were, Oh boy! Oh boy! This is so cool! He couldn't believe the Jason Stars is asking him for help on some amazing, probably top secret experiment! If this is a dream, he never wanted to wake up! Please, please let this be real!
The entire document seemed normal enough, and Adam didn't notice anything odd or life threatening in the entire 70 page document. Then again he could hardly focus on the words and was fidgeting excitedly with the ideas of the cool things he would do. He was still confused as to the reason he was brought here, but did it really matter?
"Ahem," Adam looked up to see Jason standing in front of him with a young lady.
"Did you actually read the entire thing?" Adam shook his head no. Jason suppressed a laugh, "Well if everything is in order and you have no questions, just place that contract back in it's folder and let's begin!"
Adam did as he told, he handed the folder to Jason who handed it to the woman beside him.
Jason gestured for Adam to follow him and he got up and walked quickly after the short, but speedy man.
"First things first, this is one of my many assistance around the AHD, and if all things go well, you'll likely see her quite often. This is Dr. Sparklez, she will be helping me with the variety of test we need to perform. Oh, and try to keep up with everything I say, I dislike having to repeat myself--OH, and also, don't touch anything, don't move anything, and lastly don't interrupt me. Clear?"
Adam was already struggling to keep up to Dr. Sparklez and Jason, and his head was already spinning due to the fast pace in which Jason spoke to him, but he quickly nodded and said, "Yes sir!"
"Good!" Jason grinned. They exited the dull and boring stone building and out into the sunshine. The sky was cloudless and a pristine blue, the sun had risen high enough into the sky to rid itself of the mix of purple, pink, and orange glow. More people were out and about. Adam took a moment to take in the full sights.
The camp was split by a large ravine that stretched into the distance on either side. If Adam had the chance to get a closer look, he would have seen the interconnecting wooden bridges and steep stone paths alongside the ravine that seemed to lead all the way down to the bottom. The ravine has many doors and openings that lead to many rooms and storages and other important facilities within the ravine walls.
Above ground were more building similar to the one Jason stayed in, all dull, stone buildings.
"Hurry up now!" Adam ran after Jason and followed him into another building. The walls were white and clean, several rows of beds with red sheets were placed neatly against both walls. This place had a hospital like feel to them.
"Well then, first thing is the blood test and physical check up, just to clarify your health and want not." Jason pointed to the nearest bed and let Adam take a seat.
The bed was comfy, "Please lay down for a minute and close your eyes" Dr. Sparklez directed kindly. Adam did as he was told. He wasn't sure what this would do.
Link Complete.
Beep.
"Alright go ahead and sit up," Adam did so.
"What was that?"
"Just a creation of a link, don't worry," Jason said, "Continue," he nodded to Dr. Sparklez.
"Hold out your arm so I can draw some blood, thank you," Dr. Sparklez spoke up and Adam did as he was told. The drawing was quick and a small patch was placed on his arm, the slight pain vanished.
"Whoa! The stinging is gone!" Adam gasped.
"A specially designed health patch, created using magic and science!" Jason exclaimed with a hint of proudness and arrogance.
"Wow!" Adam was easily sucked in by the grandeur of that comment.
Several more tests were taken, weight, height, blood pressure, it almost felt like a regular doctor's check up...Jason also forced him to take an academic test.
"Alright, so you are quite healthy, however physically it will take you some time to get you to the proper levels, your academic skills are quite average unfortunately, but we still have one more test. Not really a test of your compatibility, but a test of function."
"Huh?" Jason hooked his arm around Adam's and yanked him to his feet.
"Come, come! This test will be way more fun! The moment of truth awaits!" Jason smiled and laughed light-heartedly.
Adam had no choice but to follow him. Dr. Sparklez followed quietly behind. They left the facility and were out in the open air once more. Adam noticed there were way more people about. Adam hardly had a chance to look as Jason halted causing him to stumble into him.
"Alright, so here we'll be testing the the necklace function, though I'm sure that it will work, because in the 500 years I've been here I've had less failures than the number of fingers and toes I have!" Jason grinned, he hardly noticed Adam had stumbled into him.
"Wow! That's so cool! So what are we testing here!" Currently they were standing by the edge of the ravine, Adam couldn't help but glance down. The place looked so cool!
Jason nodded. Dr. Sparkles shoved Adam, and Jason answered, "The Respawn function of course!"
~~~~~
It took him a few moments to understand he was plummeting to his death, heading straight to y=0. The pull of gravity, the feeling of his hair being blown away, his clothes rippling along the shape of his body, his eyes watered from the feeling of air being forced past him. He screamed as he fell.
He fumbled in the air, he could hardly move his body as he froze up, only his arms moved freely in a wild attempt to grab something.
Dr. Sparklez stood beside Jason with a cheery smile, "Is that all sir?"
"Yes, thank, head back to the ward. I'll need you to monitor the time it takes him to respawn, if at all of course." Jason muttered. He was laying flat on the grassy ground beside the cliff with his head peeking out over the edge, his legs were swinging in the air in a carefree manner, much like a silly child.. He listened to Adam's screams and thought they were funny.
Adam was hardly a suitable subject, but it would be a pain to look for a better one. Adam's physical capabilities weren't even close to a Players, he was plenty smart, but not good enough, and his clingy attitude towards him and others was already a bother. But again, searching for a better candidate would be a pain when he already had a person available.
So to put it bluntly for the slow-witted folks, if the test was successful and Adam remained cooperative after this, Adam would continue to be the wearer of his amulet.
Adam stopped screaming, he turned his attention back to the ravine below him, he expected to catch the glimpse of the smoke and dust, "AH! Seto! What are you doing! You're ruining my experiment!" Jason huffed, he pouted as he looked upon the purple eyed sorcerer. A staff in his left hand and an Adam floating beside him.
~~~~~
Adam screamed more as he fell, suddenly he stopped and thought he had died.
"Damn, quit your squealing already! It's 9 in the morning, to early for idiots like you to be yelling!" Adam peeked open his eyes that he had squeezed shut. He squeaked and flailed around before a mysterious force forced him to look into the eyes of a sour-faced man. Clothed in purple, red, and assortment of grey, his piercing yet emotionless purple eyes stared into Adam's, many purple marks visibly covered his body and face.
Adam was to stunned for words, if he had the energy he'd be panicking to be face to face with yet another amazing person! Not just any person, Seto Magi, the one and only sorcerer for the kingdom.
To explain, there are Humans, which obviously enough are quite common, the rank of course, the human race is everywhere technically. Next, the Players, a ratio of 30 Players for every 1000 Humans, so to speak. OP's are pretty rare too, they're abilities are very different than a Players. With a finite invincibility and a skill known as Permission their ratios are even lower. In fact, hardly any OP's exist in Rekrium. To name a few, Tyler Brotato, of course, and a woman Adam has not yet met, Jess Mau. Seto himself would be considered an OP, but he is more accurately called an Exception.
Exceptions are people of ranks that can belong to more than one category, common Exceptions being the Player-Mob, or Human-Mob. Human or Players with Mob like characteristics or looks. What are Mobs one may ask? Well, they are essentially the animals and creatures of this world, excluding the Morvic rank of course. Morvics being like Humans, a single life to their name, but animal like in appearance.
But this is all besides the point, for Seto Magi is the rarest of all possible human related ranks. He is an Exception known as the OP-Player.
If a Player has many lives, and an OP a temporary invincibility then Seto has both. Think of it this way, if a regular OP, like Tyler, were to suddenly lose that invincibility of his, he'd be just a regular human, and would thus only have one life. Seto on the other hand would have multiple lives even after a loss of OP status. Not to mention, even more uncommon than an OP is he possessed magic.
In this world magic is a life draining force that would be too costly for anyone other than OP rank and above to have, not only that an OP can only use magic if they were born with it. Which is as one can imagine, rare. Tyler Brotato, and even the woman by the name of Jess are just regular, magicless OP's.
So to Adam, floating in front of this rare, and wonderful legend, said to be the oldest AHD member, he was stunned. One for being frightened by his near death experience, and two because he was floating in front of the one and only Seto Magi.
"Hey! Did you hear me asshole, I said shut up and quit screaming!"
"AH! Seto! What are you doing! You're ruining my experiment!" Adam heard Jason's voice from above and crained his neck to look. There indeed Adam could make out Jason's head poking out from the top of the ravine.
Seto looked up and then at Adam and then back at Jason, "Experiment? What the nether could you possibly be doing with a noisy guy like this?"
"Testing the AA77.32 R3sPaWn of course."
"Hmm? Oh, so he's just a regular Human? That makes more sense, he's never died before, that explains his whining. Sorry to interrupt your experiment. I'll make it up to you and speed up the process," Seto answered bluntly.
"H-huh!" Adam looked at Seto with shock, "W-wait, don't drop me please!"
"I won't, don't worry," For some reason Seto's expressionless voice did not reassure Adam in the slightest. Before he could protest or say another word, or even bat an eye, Seto had swung his arm holding his staff and Adam was flung to the side of the ravine wall.
It was quick, Adam didn't feel a thing. Though blood did splatter and his bones did break, he didn't know that. Seto released his magic on the body and it instantly disintegrated, "Whoops, I forgot Human ranks bleed. I'll have it cleaned up later, is that better Jason?" Seto called to him as he continued walking up the stones paths along the side of the ravine.
Jason nodded with a smile, "Thanks Seto! You're the best! Ooo! I think Tyler is dropping off a delivery of cake for me later, I'll be sure to leave you some if you stop by!"
"Sure, I'll be there." Seto said.
"Okie dokie then! Thanks again, I need to go follow up on the progress!" Jason sat up and waved. He quickly stood up and balanced near the ravine edge before running off. He looked excited to see the results of the experiment, like a child who'd just found a new toy.
~~~~~
Adam screamed and sat up, but he wasn't in the ravine, he wasn't outside or anywhere it looked like. It was completely dark, like and empty void. However that wasn't true either... There was some light, or so he thought. There seemed to be a faint glow behind him, otherwise he shouldn't be able to see his hands.
Adam realized he was sitting, well siting on whatever was below him, it was all black to him. He stood up and glanced at his entire body. There didn't seem to be an injures or marks or blood. He shuddered, thank Notch for that!
Adam turned around and saw a glowing screen. Or something like one.
In large letter it read GAME OVER, below that a short sentence. Adam Azure was splat like a bug! ;P
What the heck was with the winky-tongue face?
Below that was something that said Score: 0
Lastly, below that was the word Respawn.
Was this what Jason meant, he was probably supposed to press it.
Adam walked toward the brightly lit words, he reached out his hand and flinched.
Give him back to me!
Only if you hand over what I rightly deserve! Your power, I want the secrets to your power!
You foolish man, there is no secret! I demand you return my son to me!
Adam shuddered as this feeling washed over him. What was that just now, who were those people? A man and a woman, they were--
Stop this! Listen to me ԍɔuɒԍɓuԍΛ! This will not work!
It will because I will make sure it does! Dammit, out of my way! I will save him!
Adam shook his head and stumbled back, this time he heard two new voices another man and woman. Who are all these people--Oh no! Was this some weird side-effect! He should hurry back to tell Jason! Adam moved forward and pressed the Respawn quickly. There was a flash of bright light and he gasped.
"Oh! Look at that, he did live!" Adam glanced to his right and saw Jason in a rolling chair next to his bed, his hand was around the amulet around Adam's neck.
"That's good, I was just about to remove the amulet, I thought you died for good!" He laughed and Adam felt sick, this is not what he expected of the genius Jason Stars...nor of the sorcerer Seto Magi. Adam was starting to regret signing that contract.
If only he paid attention to the actual contract, he would've known he would be required to stay in the AHD.
:D
Note: Jess Mau is Aphmau, she does not appear for a long while however. Dr. Sparklez holds relation to CaptainSparklez, however he is not in this book, and Dr. Sparklez is NOT a girl friend or wife. Dear god n0!
By the way, I think this story is coming along quite nicely, I enjoy writing Jason's childlike personality, and Seto's angry and often emotionless personality :D
