39 Love

"You ladies can go to sleep first; I will take care of this." I said. In silence they nodded in agreement, then they took their leave. Then I turned my attention back to Charlotte who was still crying a river.

"Charlotte." I said as I moved to sit beside her. Her face remained buried.

"Charlotte, look at me." I said again. This time she lifted her head up slowly and turned to face me. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, but it was still not enough to ruin her image.

"Leave me alone..."

"I've come to talk to you."

"I don't want to listen to you..."

"Don't expect any pretty words from me, because what you are about to hear is the truth, and nothing but the truth."

"No! I don't want to listen to you! Leave me alone!" she covered her ears like a child trying to shut out the world.

"I am not your daddy first of all. And this is not home."

She still kept on screaming repeatedly the last few sentences.

"Don't get me confused. I am not planning to stay here any longer than I have to. Don't worry, we will be saved and get out of this place, before you even know it."

"You're obviously lying!" She screamed. Well that was half a lie.

"Partially, but that's because you're giving up already. Back at home you had servants to take care of you; here we are the best you got, so all you have to do is rely on us. Ok?" I said, and she seemed much calmer now.

"No, I don't like this place... I still want to go home..." she said trying to wipe away her tears. I grabbed some toilet paper from the case and gave it to her.

"But this isn't tissue!" she complained.

"There are all the same." I said.

"No! A tissue is used for wiping away tears, toilet paper is used for your..."

"Ok, I get it." I cut her of short before she embarrassed the life from herself.

She became quiet.

"Charlotte, are you following me?"

"Yes, it's just that...I am so tired but I can't fall asleep..."

"You want me to tell you a bedtime story?" I joked.

She blushed, and there was a brief silence before she continued:

"My mother used to read me them, until she..."

"Alright, I tell you a bedtime story. So what do you want to hear?" I realized I was helping her follow her childish footsteps, but it didn't matter to me. It was Charlotte anyways.

"You tell me one I haven't heard." She did not cry, which was a miracle.

"The Three Little Pigs?" I suggested.

"Heard that one already."

"Red Riding Hood?"

"Heard it too."

"Pinocchio?"

"That too."

"Fine I will make up one." then gears began turning in my head, as I fashioned a great story, one that actually made me proud.

"Alright, I just thought of the story, though I you need to help me make up the names."

"Ok!" she sounded like an enthusiastic child again.

"Once upon a time, there was a boy named..."

"Hobbleton!" she almost screamed. Her eyes were shimmering with pure excitement.

"Ok...why that name though?"

"I...I had a classmate named that, and he was really charming." She made a huge smiled with her eyelids closed... though I had no idea how the name Hobbleton sounded cute.

"Very well, continuing on. He was stranded on an island with a girl named..."

"Peregrine!" she yelled with pure excitement again.

"Why the complicated names?"

"She was the only friend I had in school, though I haven't seen her for a long, long time."

"Fine, moving on. The two of them had no idea how they got here, but there wish was the same. They both wanted to go home."

"That sounds...familiar."

"Maybe." I said and I was once again, truly fascinated how stubborn a person can be, a brief moment later I continued:

"Anyhow, the whole entire time, Peregrine...can I just call her Peg?" I was kind of regretting letting her make up the names.

"No!"

"Peg was complaining the whole entire time, while Hob was trying to figure out how to get of the island."

"Why are you changing their names!"

"They don't want to waste time with their names as much as I bother to."

"I don't believe you."

"Can you please let me finish the story?"

"Fine." She quieted down again.

"Hob was very annoyed by the presence of Peg, but even so he tolerated her much. Because he didn't want to leave the island without her."

"But why?"

"Let's not be picky with details."

"But give me a good reason..."

"Anyways, they always got into arguments. Even though Hob won all of them in the end, he gained nothing. So one day he gave up on arguing and surrendered to her."

Charlotte sat still for once as her eyes poured on the attention on me... I looked away, since I can't afford to be side tracked again or else I will forget what I am doing again.

"He did everything to please her, and in the end she agreed him. Then with teamwork, they built a pair of wings and flew away together, back into their own houses, happily ever after."

"Terrible ending." She said. I was quite taken aback.

"Then tell me a good ending." I challenged her.

"They flew back and built new house together, and they lived there together, happily ever after."

"What makes you think that?"

"Because in the beginning of the story you said, Hob didn't want to leave the island without her. So that means...they are meant to be together."

I was speechless.

"Ling?" Charlotte asked.

For a moment the ending almost had me, it couldn't be possible! Charlotte and me? Not in a bajillion years. We were more than galaxies apart, we were dimensions apart. For a moment I felt some sort of joy leaped from my heart...meant to be together... I kept on repeating those words in my mind thousand times a second, but they made no sense to me.

"Oh sorry, my mind went blank for a moment." I said, as I turned my head away.

"I kind of feel sleepy now..." she yawned. Then she continued:

"So are you... going to sleep too?" she yawned several more times after that.

"Tell Silk and Yumi and that I am going to take the watch for tonight."

"Ling..."

"Don't worry about me."

"I am not!" she yawned again.

"Unless you'd care to hear another brilliant story from a genius like me." I joked.

"I am sleeping now." she turned around and went away.

I was too hyped to sleep so I took the first watch, I kept repeating those words in my mind. Noises came from the jungle every once and a while, but it didn't bother me. Most of it was just bloody howls and whimpering cries from who knows what? I yawned for the first time during the watch, I looked at the sky the shower of stars looked like a smile and the moon had a sly smile too it. Then I under the shower of moonlight, I swear I saw something that resembled a...Kinlin? Maybe, perhaps I am becoming crazy now. love is crazy, thought popped in my head. And I shook my head to get rid of the idea. Then afterwards I completely forget about my "job", as I closed my eyes and fell asleep, thinking about being in love.
