Chapter 1 ==> Be Bored In School

You'll have no trouble with that. School's for chumps anyway.
Hm. Aren't you a rebellious, sarcastic little shit. What's your name, anyway?

==> COOLKID POSER

Oh, please. Let's get serious here.

==> DAVE STRIDER

That's better. Your name is DAVE STRIDER. You have a great fondness for PRESERVED DEAD THINGS. You might even say you love them enough to want to pursue a career in PALEONTOLOGY. You also take a great liking to MUSIC, especially when it involves SICK BEATS and ILL RHYMES. DRAWING is another passion of yours, as well as the exquisite art of IRONY. One of your more lowkey interests is PHOTOGRAPHY. Your bedroom wall at home is SET ASIDE SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR SELFIES.
In truth, no one cares about any of this. Not even you care at this particular point in time. Currently, your only real objective is to stay awake through the rest of social studies so you can go to study hall, do your homework, and then take a nap before going home. Speaking of which, isn't that the bell?
Brrrrrrrrrrrring!
Well you'll be damned. It is the bell. Shoving your things into your bag unceremoniously, you trudge to your study hall. As you do so, you begin to let your mind wander. Yes, it's accurate to say that COOLKID POSER is a somewhat correct assumption as to what you are. It isn't that you're a poser, really. You're more of a social pariah who's one wish is to be accepted by your peers. Two years back when your brother, DIRK, was a senior, he'd been one of the most popular kids in school. Apparently, popularity doesn't always transfer over to siblings. You suppose everyone was waiting until your brother was gone to tell you how much they hated you. That way, he couldn't protect you.
It also isn't a matter of you not having friends. You have your two best friends, John and Jade, and your cousin, Rose. However, none of you are very liked, which doesn't help. John and Jade are siblings. Both of them are incredibly dorky yet extremely nice. You're not sure how anyone could hate them. Your cousin, Rose, is pretty goth. She's into some dark shit, which freaks a lot of people out. Personally, you find it kind of cool. You're all juniors this year, which you're happy about. It means you only legally have to live at home for another year.
That's another thing. Your home life isn't the best. Your oldest brother, whom you and Dirk simply call BRO, can be somewhat abusive at times. It's mostly sneak attacks when you come home or on your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but sometimes he really fucks you up. It isn't that Dirk doesn't try to help, it's just that what he does isn't enough.
You digress.
By now, you've made it to your study hall and slide into a seat beside John and Jade. Both of them grin when you sit. "Hey, Dave!" Your best friend, John, chirps happily.
You offer him a half wave as you dig around in your pocket for your earbuds. This time, Jade speaks up. "So, guess who has a date with Vriska tonight?"
Your head snaps up to look at her. A blonde eyebrow raises from over your shades. "I didn't know you swung that way."
Jade makes a face at you as John laughs. "Not her! Me!"
You can feel yourself involuntary frown. "Vriska? Dude, she's a bitch. Not only that, but she's been known to sleep around and cheat."
Now John frowns. "You don't even know her personally!"
That may be true, but you know her well enough. She's like the Dirk of her family. Vriska's the superstar while her older sister is a lowly backup dancer. Though she's more talented and has more potential, she's cast aside because she isn't beautiful enough for the public. It makes you sick.
You cross your arms over your chest and scoff. "John, please. Like you know her any better."
"I know her way better than you! She's a good person!" He counters.
"Have you forgotten what tonight is? We always hang out as a group and rent a movie to watch on Friday's. It's your turn." John wasn't seriously ditching you for this bimbo, was he?
"Too bad! I'm going on my date!" He snaps back.
The words that leave your mouth next will haunt you for all eternity.
"Why would she want to date you?! You're a nobody just like us! She can have anyone she wants! You're nothing to her!" As soon as those words leave your lips, you slap a hand over your mouth, your eyes widening in shock.
"Dave!" Jade gasps, covering her own mouth as she glares at you. You can tell by the empty look in John's eyes that you fucked up. He doesn't say a word. He simply stands, grabs his things, and moves to the back of the room. Jade stands and gathers her things, narrowing her eyes at you. "You can be a real dick, you know that? I don't like her either, but the least you could've done was be nice about it." Spinning around on her heel, she goes to sit with John. You slip in your earbuds and blast your sad playlist for the rest of class.
When the bell finally rings, you watch as John and Jade leave without even a second glance to you. Sighing heavily in defeat, your grab your things and lower the volume on your music. As you expected, Rose is waiting for you by the door with a bewildered look on her face. "I ran into John and Jade. Neither of them even looked at me. What's the matter?"
You frown, slinging your bag over your shoulder. "Nothing. John's being stupid and is ditching us for Vriska."
"So that wasn't a rumor? Hm." She walks by your side down the hall to the front entrance as she goes on. "Are you sure it has nothing to do with your little crush on John?"
You grimace. You've always told Rose everything. You'd even told her how you'd begun to find him attractive back in 9th grade. Those feelings haven't really ever left, even though you know John is straight. "Of course not. Even if it did, John isn't gay, so what's the use?"
"You and I can still do movie night?" She offers, but you shake your head.
"That was a three year tradition that's now broken. I kind of just want to sit at home tonight." You grumble as you push open the front doors and walk out.
She sighs softly and hugs you. You don't even protest, even going as far as to hug her in return. "We don't say it often, but I love you. Please let me know if you want to come over, okay?" You nod, offering her a weak smile as she pulls back. Her mother honks from the curb and Rose sighs. "I'll talk to you later."
"Alright," you murmur with a wave as you watch her go. With every footstep she takes, you feel yourself grow more and more alone.
