The Calm Before the Storm
True to his word Jaime did as his wife had asked. They ate breakfast, walked the garden, rode horses around the castle, and much to his amazement practiced sword fighting. She was good, better than most of the men he had taught or trained. Dare he say, he actually had fun, and grew to feel guilty for the cheating he was doing. The dishonor he was giving his marriage and his word to remain true to her.
Maybe Tyrion was right all those months ago, she was the way to take off all of his stresses and fears, just by being herself. Despite being in an entirely different environment she seems to be flourishing, as if this was her home. The people around her drew into her like bees to a freshly bloomed flower. They were always nice to her and kind to her, seeing her as a pure of heart. He would have to do well to protect her.
Her last request was one that was very strange to him. She has requested to go into the city with the leftover food from the past evening. When he had inquired why, she simply smiled and said “you’ll see”. This woman was going to possibly be the best thing for him, if he allowed her to be, if not then she was going to be his death.
They had a few of the staff members load up a small cart, which she helped to fill up, despite his request not to, before they took it into town. As they rode in, they weren’t as nicely dressed as usual, and Jaime was now keeping a very mindful eye on his wife and a hand on his sword. They stopped infront of a old building that looked to be falling apart from lack of care. Arabella got off her horse and went to the door. Before she could knock Jaime stopped her by grabbing her wrist and looking at her in confusion.
“Trust me,” she said, looking up at him, a smile still on her face before removing his hand from her wrist and knocking on the door. Within moments it opened up and a weathered down lady answered the door. You could tell that she has been kept busy all night with the bags under her eyes, but he did not know the cause.
“Lady Stark, back again I see,” she called out before looking at Jaime, “Brought a visitor today”.
“Sorry it’s been a while since I last came. It’s Lady Lannnister, now, but you know I would prefer you to call me Bella or Arabella if it makes you feel better. This man beside me is my husband, Lord Jaime Lannister. How are the children doing? I brought you and them some more food to give out. Do you need any help with the children or want me to tell them a story while you get the older ones to help unload,” Arabella talked to the woman as if she knew her personally and was really concerned about her children, how ever many she had.
“Would you mind, they loved your stories last time and couldn’t wait until you came back to tell another,” the woman told his wife, her eyes lighting up with hope.
“It would be my pleasure, Martha. Jaime, would you like to come as well? I’m sure the children would love to meet a real knight,” Arabella told him, he could see the excitement written on her face. Who was he to tell her no, seeing her smile made everything seem lighter and free.
“Of course,” he told her, nodding and chuckling at her.
“The children are in the sitting room,” Martha told the pair. She held the door open to allow the pair in before calling out names to help her bring the food in.
“That’s a lot of names,” Jaime said aloud.
“Yes, its an orphanage," she said without looking back.
"Why are we here, there are people to care for them," he asked confused.
"Because there isn't anything here to help them. The crown sees it as a waste of coin, and these girls often end up in the whore house or in the kings bed to help pay for the kids here to get food. Its not fair that they have to suffer because the crown is too worried about hosting tournaments, weddings, or fighting wars to care about the children who become orphans due to illness, wars, or crimes. If I can help lessen that burden then I feel that it is my duty to do so,"
"How did I ever end up with an such a giving, selfless, and kind wife"
"How did I ever end up with a husband who's older than me, that has so much I can teach him,"
"I can teach you something as well. But I'd rather teach you this in private and in our bed," he told her. He could see the blush grace her cheeks. He brought his mouth close to her ear and grabbed her arm stopping her movements, "have I ever told you I like making you blush. Seeing you the color red excites me, and I can't to show you how much when we get back in our room".
This time her cheeks and neck turned red and he could feel her stiffen. Which made him smile even more in delight. He quickly let her go and walked back giving her space, a smile still upon his face.
"Lady Arabella, you've returned," a small voice squeaked out in excitement, "have you come to tell another tale"?”.
“Of course, Elizabeth. I’ll meet you in the main hall if you want to gather up the rest of the children,” Arabella tells the young girl.
“Yes ma’am. I’ll gather everyone. They will be so excited," Elizabeth said running downtown the hall yelling out for everyone to come to the hall for story time.
Jaime at that moment had a flashback to when he was to guard Rhegar when he went into town to help with their chores or sing songs to the children. He did it because he cared for his kingdom's people. He would have been the best king for the realm, had he not kidnapped Lyanna Stark and raped her. Jaime himself could not believe it when he was told of the news, but who was he to say what was what.
The couple walked down the rest of the hall into an open room. The room was bare except for one chair towards the front of the room. Children were starting to gather in the room sitting on the floor, smiles upon their faces as they realized what was about to happen.
"What kind of story are we hearing about today," Arabella asked as she sat in the chair. Jaime stood beside her as if he was watching over her.
"The story about the prince and his troubles," a voice called out.
"I told that one last time," Arabella said with a chuckle.
"Yes, but you never finished it. You stopped when he met the girl he decided he was going to marry," another called out.
"That's right, I did, didn't I," she said, "well then. I guess I'll pick up from there".
As Arabella told the story of the prince she was animated with life as if it was her story to tell. He could see the kids soaking up every word. He couldn't blame them. He wanted to know more about this prince and his lady. They faced great consequences for their relationship and married in secret. The pair talked about leaving the kingdom where they lived but never had the chance because his wife fell pregnant. The prince had to leave to fight and defend his kingdom, but never made it back to his wife. She ended up giving birth to 2 children. One boy and one girl. Both destined for more than they were aware of. The wife died shortly after, and the children, who were born in secret were never seen or heard about again.
Jaime wondered how she came upon this story but at its end he was wanting to know more origin and truth if any behind it.
The pair departed from the orphanage shortly after its end and went back to the chambers to relax before dinner. Neither pair knowing that the story told was the truth.
