Chapter - 26 : Falling Apart

"What happened to her now?" Sujata mumbled to herself with concern filled tone on breakfast table when Swara informed her about Sanskar's call with Rohan and he left in hurry early in morning.

"Mom what exactly had happened with Rohan's aunty? I mean, you would have met her right?" Swara asked being perplexed looking at worried Sujata.

"No Beta. We could never meet her, when we got to know about her, she was in terrible condition. Actually, she is facing nervous breakdown. She prefers to be in isolation, she is suffering with severe depression. I am not sure, but she had some issues with her husband's family. Sanskar visits Sinha family, just to give emotional support. He is too close to Rohan and Neil from his childhood." Ram gave her idea about reasons behind his son's frequent visits to Lonavala.

"Yes, he is right, we asked Sanskar lot of times that we could accompany him, but he declined as Gayatri ji gets panic attack looking at new faces" Sujata provided additional information.

Swara completed her breakfast discussing on different topics with her family but her mind was going back towards Sanskar's morning talks with Rohan. It was something alarming for her. His grieve, his anxiety can be clearly seen on his face and voice, it was more than simple emotional support for his friend's family. Swara was aware about Sanskar's deep bonding with his friends but still her logical mind was not able to digest his utmost concern for someone outside of his family. With these thoughts running in her mind she left for her office.

"I don't remember our team discussing anything about this discount anytime when we finalised the quote price, then why we added it?" Swara demanded explanations from her team members. It's been one week and she had finally received papers for deal which were not matching with her expectations.

"Mam looks like there is discrepancy" Chief of CFA's replied earning all attention from Swara and other team members, he continued in professional tone turning his attention on projector which was displaying difference between two quote prices on excel sheet "When we came up with expected Capital and Operational cost for the project and gave our sign off for the quote it was different amount. Even the papers which was circulated among all heads of department had the quote price which was discussed and confirmed. But the papers which government has ...it has totally different quote price. I have never recommended this additional discount."

Swara was astonished with revelations, she had all details in front of her.

"How is this possible" Swara scrunched her eyebrows and drowned in deep thoughts, but she diverted her attention towards current burning issue. First she needed to figure out how to compensate for additional project cost.

After long hours of discussions on next plan of action Swara came back to her cabin, now it was her time to figure out what went wrong. She was sure someone had changed final quote amount but then question was who?

She picked up her intercome and called her new secretary, "Shirin, can you please send Payal in my cabin."

Shirin Pinto was new PA for Swara, previously she used to work under Payal to manage Swara's daily schedules and paperwork. But last week Payal resigned from her job giving some lame excuse which Swara found suspicious, she accepted her resignation as her focus was on Amanera Project Cost escalation. But now she wanted to have detail talks with her ex-secretary who was on her notice period of 3 weeks.

"Sure Mam" Shirin replied professionally.

"May I come in Mam?" Payal knocked and asked permission opening Swara's cabin door after some time. She prayed to her lord when she was informed by Shirin. She was well aware about how everyone from office was alarmed due to escalations.

"Yes Payal, please come in. Have a seat" Swara offered passing soft smile.

"Thanks Mam." Payal took seat passing small smile. She crossed her fingers with hope the lioness sitting in front of her to be in her good mood.

"I accepted your resignation that day, and we couldn't talk as I was busy with Amanera but now that we have everyone's hands on it so I thought to discuss about it. Is there anything I can do for you? I mean you are working with me from long time and you were really efficient but suddenly you put down your papers. What happened?" Swara asked casually still maintaining her professionalism.

"Mam its personal reason. I have to leave this job. I really love working with you but actually my parents are persuading me to get married and ..." Payal tried her best to provide excuses which she thought would be acceptable by Swara.

"Come on Payal you can do this job post marriage as well" Swara suggested trying to sound friendly with her.

"No Mam, actually my fiancée is not ok with me doing job. So, I don't have any option" Payal lied masking her face with fakeness.

"In which century you are living Payal? If I was at your place. I would have shown him doors on his unrealistic demand." Swara did not remove her analyzing gaze from her scared face and continued "by the way you it's your personal choice. Let's be in touch as friends. We should catch up some time over coffee once this issue with Amanera gets completely sorted out I will plan something for both of us. I am really gonna miss you here as the issue with project cost and quote price is getting on my nerves. What is your opinion? What must have gone wrong?"

"Ho...How...How would...I know...I know Mam?" Payal stammered looking down and not meeting Swara's scrutinising gaze.

"Payal you were there with me during announcement. Do you remember, when we checked last time final quote price, it was what we discussed with team just before presentation. But when papers went for signoff with government, they had different quote amount. Quote amount was known only to handful of people, you were one of them and at the time of announcement you were there along with me and Papa who knew the quote price. Other assisting members did not know the consolidated quote price but about their department only. Right or am I missing something?" Swara asked draining all colours from Payal's face.

"Mam, wh...what are ...what are you saying? I did not do anything...I was always loyal to you...Trust me Mam. I was not the one who added extra discount percentage" Payal was terrified and she blurted out the truth in her nervousness.

"How do you know that the price changed was due to extra discount percentage offered to government?" Swara quried in calm yet dangerous tone raising her eyebrows.

"You only told me Mam other day" Payal tried save her sinking ship. She could not dare to look back in Swara's furious stare.

"Enough Payal. I had doubt on you on the day when you did not share the file with me immediately and tried to divert my attention, i hade started looking into it but I wanted to listen it from you." Swara roared in anger on top of her voice. Payal flinched at her place.

"You betrayed me. I was thinking we got the project because we deserved it but no it was you who bribed government officials. You knew I hate to do such things. These are not my ways; my father and grandfather did not teach me this way of doing business."

"Mam...I ...am ...I am so...sorry Mam...I had my reasons" Payal begged, tears started rolling on her cheeks. She was shivering under Swara's unwavering gaze.

"I am not accepting your resignation, but you are FIRED Ms. Payal Rastogi" Swara responded in stern yet dangerous tone.

"Mam" Payal tried to plead, she actions were reason of her wreckage.

"Get out" Swara spat venomously.

Payal got up from her seat defeatedly and started taking steps towards door when she was halted in her tracks listening Swara's threatening voice.

"And one more thing...do not even dare to search for any new job... because whatever you do...you will not get it. I will make sure of it... I will put your name on blacklist...I promise you that you won't be able to betray anyone like this. Now get out of my cabin and don't you dare to show your face to me in your entire life." Swara was in her most furious avatar.

"Shirin, block Payal's remaining salary and also her employee fund. I don't want her to receive any dues from our company. Also make sure she would not get any testimony or reference check from anyone from our office" Swara instructed over call in determined tone. She leaned back her head on head rest and her mind went on the day when she got Amanera project.

'Did Sanskar ever thought that I betray him with Amanera Project? Did he know Amanera was fixed bet for Mehra's. But how he would know, I also got to know after long time. No, I don't think he would know. But how can I forget... he is Sanskar Maheshwari, the shrewdest businessman ever. I still remember the way he looked at me before leaving conference hall. When we met in his office, he called me as betrayer indirectly. I need to talk to him. Why do I feel he knew about it' Swara dialed his number from recent call list, but his phone was busy with other call, 'Let him come back home today...I have to talk to him. It should be in person face to face.'

Sanskar parked his car in reserved parking area of hospital. He ran inside crossing glass doors. He moved towards elevators. Receptionist greeted him with smile which was totally ignored by him. He was one of the trustees of this hospital and also best friend of their senior doctor, so nobody dared to stop or question him for his frequent visits.

He reached for 12th floor which was also residence of Sinha father and son. He moved towards corridor crossing wooden door. Security guards wished him. Except designated handful of people, nobody was allowed to enter in south side of building of this floor. This floor had tight security with fully armed guards who used to restrict any person who does not have required permission to visit this side of floor.

Sanskar ran inside and witnessed Rohan standing in front of door dropping his shoulder but staring at the monitor hanged beside door.

"What happened?" Sanskar enquired panting heavily.

"Aunty's regular nurse had some emergency at her home so yesterday I appointed another nurse to care of her. As I had emergency surgery at night, she went inside to give her dinner but then ... by mistakenly she switched on the lights of the room" Rohan informed last day's happenings.

"Shit man..." Sanskar ruffled his hairs in frustration tightly closing his eyes.

"She had panic attack. I tried my best, but she is still zoned out" Rohan informed dropping his shoulders but pointing towards monitor.

"Do we need to give her injection?" Sanskar asked being perplexed.

"Yes, we have to. She needs to calm down. I don't want to force her for injection with the help of other nurses...she would go in her shell again and that is not good for her current treatment. You know...except you nobody can handle her in this state" Rohan shook his head in denial.

"I will handle her...where is she now?" Sanskar asked taking a step towards door but he stared at monitor for a moment which was showing screen of some dark room.

"Look she is over there" Rohan pointed towards monitor.

"I will keep my phone on... just come once she is ok" Sanskar confirmed and dialed Rohan's number and kept phone in his pant pocket so he can hear their conversation.

Sanskar opened the door of that dark room and stepped inside with heavy heart. He moved towards cupboard. He saw one petit figure sitting on the ground, in the corner of wall and cupboard, touching her back with cupboard but trying to hide herself from this world. Her hairs were tied in loose braid and she was wearing light sky blue Punjabi with white salwar. She pulled her legs near her chest as she heard some footsteps behind her. She dug her head in the crook of her knees closing her eyes tightly. She was shivering with extreme fear in the presence of an intruder.

Sanskar dropped his shoulders looking at her, his eyes turned moist. He closed them for a moment taking deep sigh. He needed to maintain his calm and composed attitude to deal with her.

He sat down in front of her folding his legs. "Aunty, it's me Sanskar."

She recognised his voice; she slightly raised her head and from corner of her eyes she looked at him. Even it was full sun outside, this room was dark, not a single window was there. But room was illuminated with dim night lamp. In that dim light, Sanskar could see extreme fear in her eyes.

"Aunty, that doctor uncle told me you did not eat your dinner yesterday. Why? What happened? You should eat something. You must be hungry. Please, should I bring your food here. I will make you eat. We both will eat together." Sanskar was trying to convince her like she is small innocent child. She was looking at floor with emotionless face, but her eyes were moving towards him every now and then.

She nodded her head in no still bowing her head.

"Please Aunty for me... just little food else how you will get strength? We have to do lot of work right. We have to find her. If you will not eat, then how can you help me in finding her?" Sanskar pointed towards the doll which she had clutched near her chest like her life dependent on her.

"Shona" She whispered and raised her head but not meeting her eyes with Sanskar's. She caressed her doll's hairs with love and then again, she clutched doll against her chest.

"Aunty, we need to find her right? I had promised you that I will bring her back to you. But you also need to help me. Else how would I be able to search for her. You have to be strong for that. You have to eat healthy food to become strong" Sanskar kept on talking with her in soothing words.

"Shona" she kept on mumbling the same word again and again. She showed him her doll and asked in her pale yet melodious voice with pleading eyes "Shona."

"Yes, Aunty I will bring her back to you. Your Shona" Sanskar nodded his head in assurance and caressed fake hairs of doll.

"Shona" she clutched doll again to her chest.

Sanskar kept on talking with her. After some time, Rohan entered in the room carefully not disturbing their talks. He sat beside Sanskar who had kept her busy in his assured words. Rohan inserted needle in her wrist, she winched in pain for a moment. Soon medicine started their work and her eyelashes started getting heavy.

Soon she slipped in deep slumber resting her head on cupboard. Even in her deep slumber she kept her tight hold on her doll clutching her more tightly near her chest. Sanskar picked her fragile figure up in his arms and then lied her on the bed.

Soon other nurses came inside room to help Rohan with treatment attaching all medical equipments to her fragile body. They put her on glucose drip and added required medicines.

Sanskar was staring at her pale and tired face with blank gaze standing in one corner. Once staff was out of her room, he came near her bed to caress her hairs with moist eyes and left from the room without saying a word.

Rohan looked at his retreating figure in defeat. He knew his best friend, for world he the shrewdest, arrogant, cold businessman who knows how to bend each and every one infront of him. But in front of this lady he does not even think for once to get on his knees. If anyone outside of this room would have witness the scene happened just few moments ago, they would not have believed he was the same Sanskar Maheshwari, brutal to compete with.

Rohan was aware that his best friend still blames himself for her this condition. He checked her once again and instructed further treatment procedure to nurse and left to look for his best friend who needed him at the most.

Sanskar came in the balcony to take fresh air. He was feeling breathless remembering incident happened 5 years back.

"When are you going to stop blaming yourself?" Rohan asked in calm standing beside Sanskar who was looking at mountains with blank gaze.

"Never, it was my mistake" Sanskar shook his head not turning his eyes towards Rohan.

"Why don't you accept it Sanskar? IT WAS NOT YOUR MISTAKE" Rohan tried his best to maintain his cool.

"I was the one who was on wheels Rohan. That accident happened because of my negligence. She is suffering for my deeds." Sanskar drowned in guilt, events happened five years back on that stormy night replayed in front of his eyes.

It was new year eve, Sanskar and Neil had come back to India after completing their MBA and had joined Maheshwari Business house as board of directors. They had planned to celebrate new year with Rohan, in Singhania's Panchgani farmhouse. It was 31st December and all three friends had gala time after long duration. Neil and Rohan were total dramebaaz. Sanskar was the only one who was sensible among all three of them. Late night they decided to visit Table Point to start their new year.

Neil and Rohan were already quite high with their drinks, so Sanskar decided to take wheels in his hands. When they had started their journey, it started pouring heavily. Roads were emptied due to heavy rain, even visibility was low due to fog.

Sanskar was concentrating on road, hearing loud singing of Neil and Rohan in dissonant voice. They both were trying to give him tough competition in singing.

He took sharp turn going upwards direction on hill. Suddenly one figure dressed in white came in front of the car. He turned steering wheel swiftly to save her, but still car had dashed her. He stopped the car abruptly breathing heavily. Rohan and Neil could not understand sudden jolt. They both were lost in their own world to witness someone coming infront of their car.

Sanskar hurriedly came out of car followed by Neil and Rohan. They saw one figure lying on the road and blood oozing out from her body and mixing with rainwater.

Sanskar moved towards her taking long strides and turned her. She was injured badly but still holding her doll in her embrace tightly. Rohan checked her pulse; she was breathing but it was dropping by every passing minute.

"We need to take her to hospital" Sanskar lifted her and moved towards car's back door.

He instructed Neil to drive car while Rohan and he himself settle down on backseat keeping her fragile body between them. Neil drove to the nearest hospital and Rohan himself started treating her. He was visiting faculty for that hospital, staff was familiar with him so they did not ask him about registering police complaint but focused on the treatment.

Sanskar and Neil were waiting outside of operation theatre, their shirts were drenched in water as well as her blood.

"What happed? How is she?" Neil asked when he saw Rohan coming out of OT.

"She had two shots on her shoulder" Rohan mumbled being perplexed.

"Shots? You mean gun shots?" Neil asked in horrified.

Sanskar was numb with revelations.

"Yes, chances of her survival are minimal" Rohan replied leaving deep sigh.

"No, she has to survive. Else I won't be able to forgive myself ever" Sanskar whispered being determinant.

Two days later, trio shifted her to Lonavala's hospital for better medical support. Sanskar and Neil talked to local police to find her whereabouts filing unofficial complaint. They knew someone was behind her life, they needed to safeguard her first. They were waiting for her to gain consciousness. But unfortunately, she slipped in coma due to heavy blood loss.

Sanskar started blaming himself for the mishap when Rohan declared about her being slipped in coma.

"Sanskar, her condition is not due to the accident. Because of accident she got bruises and some wounds, but her condition is because she got shot two times and we found some drugs in her body which is deteriorating her health. Her organs are impacted severely due to consumption of these drugs over the years." Rohan confirmed after thorough check of her recent reports.

"What do you mean by drugs? Does she drug addict?" Neil asked in disbelief.

"Over the years?" Sanskar mumbled scrunching his eyebrows.

"Not exactly Neil, the drugs which we found in her body are not normal, consuming them will have the most painful death. It's like slow poison. I think... some one is behind her life...who will take such drugs even after knowing their side effects." Rohan informed giving additional insights

"And she was shot as well. You are right someone is behind her life" Neil whisper yelled.

"Yes, we need to file a police complaint officially, let's put her story on media. We will be able to track her family" Rohan responded.

"No... We shouldn't" Sanskar said shaking his head in denial and continued looking at his friends confused faces "If we file a case or put her on media, we won't be sure who will come up. There is chance her enemies who are behind her life will come for her after knowing she is alive. This will put her life again in danger."

"But Sanskar her family?" Neil reasoned out not understanding his point of view.

"We will find it keeping everything under cover" Sanskar assured with determination.

After almost two years she came out of coma, in these two years trio were doing their best to find her household. They searched in all nearby villages sending their investigators to search in each and every household to look for any missing member. They even search old data base of police records for missing people from nearby villages. Roger was assigned with only duty to find any detail about her but till today they were not able to find single lead except someone named 'Shona' is close to her heart.

It's been three years, she was out of coma and was under care of Sanskar and Rohan, she was named as Rohan's aunty Gayatri, to hide her true identity to safeguard her life. Due to heavy dose of drugs and blood loss, she lost her mental health not remembering single thing of her life except one word 'Shona' which she used to mumble everytime and her doll. She used to get freighted with everyone except Sanskar.

Nobody knew why from day one when she was out of coma, she trusted him. His dark brown eyes used to remind her someone very close to her heart. He was the only one in this big bad word who could calm her down when she used to get panic attacks. He was the only one whom she allowed to touch her doll.

Over the period of time Sanskar himself could not understand when she became his mother by choice. Even though she was suffering with her mental disorder, her every tear used to stab his heart. He never understood why he found abundant motherly love in her eyes for him from day one. Whenever he prayed in front of lord almighty he prayed for her wellbeing, he wished and did everything in his might to find her Shona and bring her back to this pious, innocent lady unaware of destiny's plans that he himself was the keeper of her most precious possession named Swara. He was the one whom destiny chose to take care of Mrs. Reva Anurag Mehra.

"Stop blaming yourself Sanskar. Why don't you understand, aunty's condition is not because of you but because of those people who made her life miserable" Rohan had tears in his eyes looking at guilt ridden Sanskar.

Sanskar shook his head in denial "Because of me she is away from her Shona. Away from her loved ones"

"And because of you only she is alive Sanskar. If anybody would have been at your place, he would have left her on the roads to die on that day. But you did not. You are taking care of her like she is your own mother. I don't know what is between you and her but she only gets calm with your voice." Rohan tried to make him understand.

"Even I don't know why I cared for her like I care for Mom. There is abundant love in her shivering eyes for me. Why?" Sanskar agreed with Rohan.

"Did Roger find anything about her?"Rohan asked.

"No, but I have not lost my hopes. One day I will find her Shona and will bring her back to her no matter what. But I also want to know who made her this condition. Once I get hold of that person, I swear Rohan I will show him what is feels like living in hell" Sanskar was determined, he gritted his teeth and tightened his fist that his knuckles became white.

"How is she now?" Sanskar asked diverting his attention.

"She is sleeping m, but I think she is stable now" Rohan confirmed and they kept on discussing about next steps.

It was evening when Swara came back to her home and was roaming in garden, her mind was occupied with thoughts of Sanskar. She was remembering all her incidents with Sanskar post Amanera project announcement, his words were carved on her mind. She was waiting for him desperately to come back home so she would confront him. She was strolling on the path looking up in the sky staring at stars and sharing her worries with her only friends.

Swara stumbled when she dashed with someone, she closed her eyes with thought that she would fall on the ground with thud but someone held her tightly holding her waist.

Swara shivered under his touch and swiftly opened her eyes to see smiling Sahil infront of her. She jerked and stood back on her feet swiftly gritting her teeth. She felt disgusted under his touch and gaze.

"Are you ok Swara?" he asked masking his face with concern.

"Yes, I am fine" Swara replied with tight smile and turned to go back inside home.

"Swara, you can talk to me. I know you are worried about something but..." Sahil moved his palm towards her shoulders but he was halted in his tracks listening loud shout from his back.

"Sahil, what are you doing here?" Divya spat from back. Earlier she came to garden area to take fresh air.

"Mom, I was just..." Sahil could not finish.

"Just what Sahil...? Go back to your room now" Divya barked at her son but giving death glare to Swara.

Swara turned shaking her head to go back inside home. She and Divya were giving silent treatment to each other from the day Swara stepped in this house.

"Don't you feel shame to lure over my son even after being a married girl. Is this your upbringing?" Divya lashed out as Swara. Finally she got a chance to pour her hatred as Sujata and Ram were not at home to protest.

"Mom what are you saying? Please don't say a word to Swara. She is already going through a lot." Sahil tried to defend masking his face with genuine expressions.

"You don't need to defend me Sahil. I am capable of myself." Swara replied with tight smile even before Divya would come up with her counter attack and continued passing rigid glare at Divya while folding her hands near her chest, "And Divya Aunty, my father taught me how to respect my elders even though they are at fault. If I had not been raised under his upbringing I would not have thought for a single second to insult anyone who badmouth about my character. You are my husband's aunt, so please be like that only. Don't try to become my guardian" Swara raised her eyebrows giving cold look to her and then she turned to leave.

Sahil was astonished looking at her arrogance and sarcasm, she had given perfect reply to his mother still maintaining decorum of their relation.

"Ohh I am sorry, but I have no intentions to become your guardian. But I must say what a game you are playing. Your mother destroyed your father's life and you are ruining life of my son and my nephew. I think betrayal is flooded in every ounce of your blood after all you are a daughter of that betrayer Reva who ran away from her marriage for her own desires and ..." Divya spat venomously as she could not take her insult.

"Enough, dare you Mrs. Sengupta to say a word. You have no right to interfere in my family matters. You are no one to me so keep your mouth shut." Swara turned swiftly to face raged Divya. She pointed her finger but was shaking under extreme anger.

Swara ran away from there wiping her tears inside home, she immediately went to her room crying miserably. Her sufferings, her lonely childhood, her father's downfall and pain, everyone's taunts replayed in front of her eyes.

She slumped down on her bed curling herself. It was total dark in the room and she was crying her heart out sobbing heavily burring her face in pillow.

She felt long fingers in her hairs caressing it. She was tired and exhausted with her life which had become roller coaster ride from her childhood.

"I hate her... she destroyed our life...she destroyed my childhood...she ruined my father...our small family...I hate her from core of my heart" Swara broke down taking his hand in her's not raising her head from pillow.

Sahil smirked inwardly looking at his success.
He had found perfect opportunity to execute his plans for the day, he knew Sujata and Ram were out of Mumbai returning back next day morning where as Sanskar would be reaching home anytime, his man was keeping an eye on Sanskar and updating him about his locations. Swara was shattered because of his mother's harsh words, he had created perfect scene where his mother would be able to see them together.

He kept on caressing her hairs siting on his knees beside her bed. After a moment Swara controlled her tears and wiped them from back of palm. Suddenly lights got switched on of her room, she closed her eyes due to bright light and then blinked to adjust her vision and when she looked at the person in front of her, she widened her eyes like her eyeballs would come out of their sockets. Earlier she thought it would be Sanskar caring for her. She got up, jerking his hands and opened her mouth to ask his sudden unexpected visit to her room.

"What are you doing here Sahil?" Swara turned her back to see Sanskar standing at the doorstep looking at his cousin dangerously.

"She needed me, so I was here as her friend" Sahil replied shrugging his shoulders. He stood on his feet and started taking steps towards door.

Swara's mind went on blank mode that it took few minutes for her to register his words. In flicker of moment she could not figure out whether she needed to lash out at Sahil for his advances or to concentrate on Sanskar, giving him explanations about his cousin's appearance in their room at this hour of night.

"Get out" Sanskar whisper yelled at Sahil

"Swara call me if you need anything" Sahil said bringing the most genuine tone from his vocal cords. He left their room leaving two tormented souls to fight with their inner demons.

Swara's focus was on Sanskar, she was staring at his eyes which were filled with tears and pain. He was not looking at her but still she could feel his eye drifting towards her every now and then. Looking at his eyes, pale face, Swara's heart sunk in guilt for giving him pain.

He closed his burning eyes for a moment and then came towards her and raised his hand to keep it on her head, "I am sorry...I am sorry for everything...I am sorry for coming in your life... I am sorry for forcing you for this marriage...I am sorry for every single thing happened in your life... but please please I beg you Swara don't ruin yourself for my sins... I am sorry...please" Sanskar confessed staring at her eyes, one tear rolled on his cheek. He gave her final glance and then turned to left from their room without saying a single word to her.

Swara kept on looking at his retreating figure being lifeless, he was going away from her taking her breath, her soul, her heart, her existence.

Destiny closed her eyes tightly feeling stream of tears; 'you both cannot fall apart like this. You both are meant to be together. Please god gave them the strength to fight this last test. I don't want history to repeat itself again.'
