TWENTY-THREE

My leg bounces up and down nervously as I wait for the hour to be up. At this rate, I just want to hand in my chemistry paper and go for lunch because it seems that no matter how hard I study to do well in this class, I don't. I was up late last night trying to go over the work and I've probably still flunked the paper.

Why did I ever take chemistry?

The bell signals that our time is up and my teacher stands up to begin collecting the papers "Times up everyone. Pens down or I'll deduct marks." She says sternly and I don't hesitate to drop mine and hand my paper in. Once she's finished collecting all of the papers, I sprint out of class with Kelcy following close behind but far enough that we don't have to talk to each other.

After arriving at our table we take our seat and wait for everyone in an awkward silence. I take this moment to go on my phone and play Temple Run before everyone arrives too. However, Logan appears to be in a shitty ass mood and when Courtney arrives last, she doesn't even spare him a glance.

As soon as she takes a seat, the tension that fills the air could be cut with a knife. I try to act as casual as possible mainly because it's not that surprising that there's tension in the group although the fact that it's between Courtney and Logan is a little concerning..

"How was the chemistry test?" Tyler pipes in an attempt to make conversation.
"Probably failed." I mutter with a dejected pout.

Courtney sighs heavily, rubbing her temples as she does so. Megan nudges her and whispers something in her ear causing Courtney to roll her eyes.

"How about we go out this Friday?" James suggests.

"Where?" Ashleigh asks and he looks down at her with a smirk before saying something softly to her. She blushes at him before laughing.

"Bro, when was the last time we went to that diner near your house?" Tyler asks James and he shrugs.

"Would be cool to go there again, actually." He says and I cast Courtney a subtle glance. I'm generally curious as to what got her so mad that she isn't even taking part in making plans. Usually Courtney jumps at the opportunity to organise something for the other students to gossip about. A scowl is settled on her face and Logan's blue eyes are colder than normal today.

"They make the best french frie-"

A call from Logan's phone interrupts Ashleigh from continuing and Courtney immediately focuses on Logan before glaring at him.

"It's that same bitch isn't it?" Courtney snarls when he puts his phone back down. Logan sighs frustratedly and after checking the caller ID, declines the call.

"Get the fuck over it Courtney." He says with a shrug, his voice lacking any hint of humour.

Courtney scrapes her chair back as she abruptly stands up, slamming her hands on the table in anger.

"I will not 'get the fuck over it' Logan!" She hisses. Logan's eyes harden and he narrows them Courtney. "You don't fucking own me. I will do whatever the fuck I want. " Logan says, his voice low and filled with venom. His hands that are in front of him, clench tightly and I look between the two of them who stare heatedly at one another. That is until Courtney straightens and fixes her shirt while grabbing her bag.

"You are such a dick, I have so much dirt on you." She whispers venomously. Stepping around the table in an attempt to leave. That immediately makes my eyebrows raise because Courtney never walks away from a fight. Unless it's Logan, obviously.

Somehow when it comes to Logan, he can make her shut up and sit down. She always lets him win and sit back in victory. Maybe it's because he's just as
malicious as her.

And in Sophomore year when Courtney did an exchange student program for about a year and a few months, Logan made sure to run everything. Since then, they've being equally as powerful and due to them dating, their control and popularity has only increased.

As Courtney make a move to walk to the exit, in fury and pure frustration, Logan stands up and grabs her by her wrist, pulling her towards him.
"You aren't getting the last word," He mutters.

He whispers something in her ear which makes her eyes widen and, if I'm not imagine things, a sliver of fear run through them before it's quickly masked over with an emotionless expression.

Nobody ever scares Courtney, ever.

Except Logan.

Nor can anyone but him make her keep quiet.

Her heels clattering against the floor is the last sound we hear before the cafeteria starts to whisper again, no doubt talking about what just happened. Megan runs after her and the rest of us simply return to making small talk although it's even a lot more tense than before. The students that that continue to glance at Logan makes him groan.

"Shows over!" He shouts although not everyone obliges. "I said, shows over!" He yells once more, his warning tone not one to be taken lightly. With his last command everyone goes back to what they were doing before, leaving me with one question...

What did Logan say to Courtney?

****

I put my hair into a high pony as I snuggle into my pillows on my bed. With the movie playing on my TV, I find myself slowly growing more drowsy although the funny scenes of the movie manage to help me keep my eyes open. I check my phone every now and again, making sure that my mom hasn't sent me a message. She's in a meeting today which is the reason why she's not home yet.

Since it's Friday, I didn't have to go to Sunny Smiles either and I sure as hell wasn't going to spend extra time with the Elite. So far Rachel is really good with the kids at Sunny Smiles- which was expected- and a great help. I look forward to seeing Rachel and Alex after school. Rachel was supposed to come over tonight but she had to go back to NYC to get last minute things so she already left last night.

I'm awoken from my reverie of thoughts by the sound of my doorbell and I sit up tensely, wondering who it could be. If it's one of the Elite, they usually message me before randomly pitching up and Rachel isn't in town so it definitely isn't her. Nor is it my mother because, really, why would she ring the doorbell?

I sigh, pushing my sheets off of me and slipping my unicorn slippers onto my feet before padding my way downstairs quietly. I hear a knock again and I jump slightly, shaken by the thought that it could possibly be a burglar. With that thought in my mind, I grab the first thing I can find which is a fork, might I add, and walk to the door gingerly.

My mind races with thoughts of the many possibilities of what could be behind the door. However, I tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear, hold the fork tighter before swinging the door open with baited breath.

That is until I see who is behind the door.

I let out a relieved sigh, visibly relaxing although my eyebrows knit together in confusion. He raises an eyebrow at me, his hands placed casually in his pockets.

"Hey." I greet. "What are you doing here?"

Alex gives me a one shoulder shrug before looking me up and down. I try to ignore the fact that I'm wearing a short shirt and tight shorts, swapping the weight from my one foot to the other.

"I was wondering if you were busy tonight although from the looks of it, you aren't." He teases and I roll my eyes. That's when his gaze drops to the fork in my hand amusement floods his eyes.

"Where you using a fork as self defense?" He asks, his lips quirking at the sides.

"Uh, no?" I ask.

He snorts. "I knocked. Twice." He points out.

"So? Doesn't change the fact that you could be a burglar." I counter and he lets out a breath of air through his nose which could be considered a laugh.

"What kind of burglar knocks, Soph?" He muses.

I don't manage to answer to him because I'm taken aback by his use of my nickname. He didn't call me Cooper, or Sophie, but Soph. I shake my head at myself, ignoring the giddy feeling before leaning against my door.

"And what were you planning on doing if I wasn't busy?" I ask and he shrugs.

"I'm kind of in the mood for a movie or two."

I snort. "Aren't you lucky that I was doing exactly that."

He gives me a crooked smile before I step out of the way to let him into my house. "I'm going to go get some snacks in the kitchen. You can go pick a movie in my room." I inform him.

"Mmh... we doing this in your room?" He asks suggestively. I feel myself blush lightly before glaring at him.

"Stop making that sound so dirty." I scold and he only responds with a laugh before I turn to the direction of the kitchen.

"Oh, and I like your slippers by the way!" I hear him call. I look down at my feet and blush a crimson colour, feeling grateful that he can't see me currently.

After grabbing a few snacks, I return to my room only to see Alex observing my wall that is decorated with pictures. I put the things down and stand beside him, examining the pictures as well.

"You have a lot of memories with them don't you?" He asks softly. I purse my lips.

"Yeah. Yeah I do." I mumble, hoping he can't hear the emotion in my voice. His eyes slide over to a picture of Zoe and he frowns.

"Who's this?"

I smile "Zoe; my cousin."

"The one you met Rachel through?" He asks, glancing at me briefly. I nod with a smile.

"That's the one."

"Where is she now?" He asks, looking at me.

I reluctantly answer, " Australia. She moved there after my dad left. She was from his side of the family."

"Oh." Is all he responds with because I don't think there is much to say to that. I decide to change the topic and turn to face him with a smile.

"So what movie did you pick?" I ask and he smirks.

"Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates."

I chuckle. "Not a bad choice, Rosewood."

He rolls his eyes at me before taking a seat on my bed gingerly. I take the opposite side and get comfortable, holding the bowl of popcorn in front of us as he presses play. We keep a relative distance between us and I wonder if I'm crazy for wishing it wasn't so big.

The movie puts me in a light mood and due to Alex's presence, I no longer feel sleep draining my body. Throughout the comedy I laugh at some ridiculously hilarious scenes. Alex also laughs but whether it's at me or the movie, I wouldn't know. More than halfway through the movie, I glance at Alex to see him engrossed in the it with his lips quirked at the sides. I commit the moment to memory, enjoying his smile.

Oh Alex... You're so different to what I thought you'd be.

"I can't believed how hilarious it is! Even after the third time." I laugh again.

"I just make amazing movie choices." He chuckles. I roll my eyes but don't deny anything, knowing that it's true.

He starts to surf through the channels again when I decide to ask him something which has been bothering me the whole day, "Did you see what happened at lunch today?" I ask suddenly. He pauses his actions, glancing at me before continuing.

"Between Logan and Courtney?" He asks and I nod as I watch him.

"Yeah."

"Uh-huh." He says absentmindedly, trying to find something else to watch.

"I found it strange how Logan can make her shut up so fast." I mumble.

Alex shrugs, "Well, Logan is just as popular her. Maybe she knows he's not one person she wants to get on the wrong side of." He answers.

"Well obviously. Courtney isn't dumb. But she was scared when Logan whispered in her ear." I remember, thinking back. Alex sets the remote down and looks at me carefully.

"So what about it?" He asks, curiosity evident in his voice.

"I think he has dirt on Courtney."

"Maybe. But we can't dig now, it'd cause suspicions. Has Courtney been okay with you lately?" He asks.

I shrug, "She has been asking me strange questions almost as if she's digging." I furrow my eyebrows together, "You don't think she knows though right?" I ask nervously.

"No. I think she's just... Wary. After all you aren't like them." He answers. I frown at his words, not knowing whether to take it as an insult or a compliment however, I settle with the latter. I'm about to say something when I hear the door open and close downstairs before my mom shouts "I'm home!"

Alex sits up in panic. "Shit." He whispers, worry evident on his face. I laugh at his reaction before getting up from my bed and walking to my wardrobe, pulling out a thin sweater and throwing it on.

"Relax Alex. My mom is not going to be mad." I tell him and he relaxes slightly before I look at him over my shoulder.

"Although you should probably get off of my bed."

Alex jumps off at the speed of light and straightens my sheets.
"I'm here mom!" I yell back, the sound of her footsteps becoming louder.

When she walks into my room, she smiles before stumbling after catching sight of Alex sitting on my bedroom floor casually.

"Oh. Hello Alex." She greets him and he stands up to shake her hand.

"Hello Natalie. How are you?" He asks politely and my mom returns the gesture.

"Well thank you. I didn't know you were here."

"I invited him last minute to watch movies." I tell her and she nods.

"Oh, okay. As long as you two didn't get up to too much nonsense." She teases and I blush, pink dusting Alex's cheeks as well.

"Don't be silly mom."

She laughs. "Are you staying for dinner Alex?"

"I'd love to but I'm sure my mom wants me home by now. Thank you for the offer though." He smiles and my mom nods.

"Of course. I'm going to go climb into some comfortable clothes, I'll see you next time Alex." My mom informs us.

"Have a good evening Miss Cooper." He says before she walks to her room. Alex then gets back to his feet and stretches.

"I should get going." He says, glancing at his watch. I refrain from pouting, slightly disappointed that he has too leave already. I was having a really good time. However, I simply nod before we both head downstairs.

Once we're on my porch, I pull my sweater tighter around myself in attempt to shield the chilly breeze. Alex turns to me with his hands in his pockets. "Thank you for a good evening." He says and I smile, looking up at the handsome boy in front of me.

"Thank you for coming."

He smirks. "Admitting you enjoyed my company?"

I roll my eyes but don't bother to drop the smile from my face. "Don't flatter yourself."

He chuckles at me and I watch him carefully before he just looks at me in the eerily silence, the darkness covering some of his features. "I'll see you around Cooper." He says and I nod.

"Yeah. See you around Rosewood." I respond before he walks to his car and I go back into the warmth of my house.
