Chapter 15: Lost and found

Chapter fifteen: Lost and found (Ellie's POV)

I entered the cafeteria and saw that Zach was staring around the place as if he were looking for someone while I walked over there.

"There you are," he stood up and walked over to me.

"Here I am," I replied, slightly confused as to what was going on.

"I forgot to tell you, I have practice today."

Are you freaking kidding me?

If he would've told me that in the morning then I could have just gone and grabbed my car on the way, but he's telling me now? When he's my only way home and to the grocery store?

"Where does that leave me?" I asked while heading to the table.

"You can either go with Spencer, he's free to take you, or you can wait till after my practice is done," he said, "Spencer lives near Brett anyway," he shrugged.

I was almost a hundred percent sure Spencer had a date planned for tonight with a girl from our class. "Yeah, but he's not free," I said while sitting down.

"Aren't you?" Zach asked Spencer in confusion.

"Mm, yeah. I am free," he nodded.

"No, you're not. Don't you have-" I stopped talking when he realized he didn't want anyone to know. I shrugged it off for the moment but pulled him with me into the lunch line a few minutes later. "You have a date, Spencer. Don't even think about getting out of it because you're nervous. You've liked Molly for a while, you're going on this date. End of," I huffed.

"Jesus, all right," he sighed in defeat but he was grinning like a fool. Like the fool he is.

We sat back down and I turned to Zach. "He's not free," I shook my head.

Zach stared at me, then at Spencer, then let it go. He'll get it out of one of us later. "So, you're going to wait?" he asked me.

"Yup," I replied, "I'll be waiting for you," I sighed.

He parked the car and we got out in front of the grocery store, heading inside with a cart.

"Do you have anything you want to get or am I just like the butler that's buying groceries?" I asked while going through each aisle.

"I'd say you're just the butler," he shrugged while walking beside me.

I rolled my eyes and we got into the first aisle to grab some cereal and of course, we started arguing.

"No, I don't like Rice Krispies, we're not getting that," he put it back.

"Yes, we are," I grabbed it once again.

"No, we're getting Oreo O's."

I love Oreo O's but I want Rice Krispies as well. "Can't we just get both?" I asked.

"Just keep in mind you're paying for your things," he shrugged.

"I want Rice Krispies!" I stomped.

He kept taking the box out of the cart so I grabbed the box and climbed into the car, holding the box to myself. He looked at me, sighing in frustration. "We've been here five minutes," he rolled his eyes before putting the box of Oreo O's in the car as well and pushing it along to the next aisle.

He left me, still in the cart at the beginning of the aisle, and walked along, bringing groceries back, handing them to me. He went into the next aisle, not bothering to push the cart along and I waited there for ten minutes, getting worried when he still didn't show up.

I huffed and climbed out of the cart, pushing it along to the other aisles. I scanned almost every aisle, keep in mind that this store was huge, and he was nowhere to be found. I pulled out my phone and dialed his number only for it to come out as switched off. It must have died.

Now, where the hell am I supposed to look for him?

You would think it's easy, looking for a taller guy that's roughly six foot three, maybe four. But when you look at how many people there are here, it's not that easy. And neither of us come to this store often because it's not closest to our houses, this is closest to Brett's apartment. We don't know this place, and Zach just got lost.

I started back at the beginning going through each aisle all over again and I repeated this process three freaking times but came to no avail, it's like he disappeared into thin air and just vanished.

"Can Ellie Hart please report to the counter, please? Ellie Hart."

I've always wondered why they call people to the front at supermarkets and stuff. I pushed the cart along and got to the front where I saw the lady at the register.

"I'm Ellie," I cleared my throat.

"Right over there, hun." She pointed to a bench near the entrance where Zach was sitting, his elbow resting on his knee, and his chin in the palm of his hand while he looked around, his foot bouncing off the ground as he tapped it.

"Thank you," I smiled before heading over to him. I stood in front of him, my arms folded across my chest.

He stood up slowly before walking over to me. "Where were you?" he asked.

"Ask me that one more time and I will smack you across your face," I deadpanned, "I was sitting in the shopping cart, in the same spot as you asked me to, and then you just disappeared. I've been looking for you this whole time!" I smacked his arm.

He rolled his eyes and took the cart and proceeded to the checkout and pay for all of it even though we were supposed to split it.

"I mean seriously, what were you thinking? Where did you even go? I looked in every single aisle three times and you were nowhere to be found. You were literally lost. It was lost and found, like hide and seek but accidental," I rambled on and on, pushing the cart and following him to his car. "Where even were you?" I questioned as he opened the trunk.

"I went to the front like a normal person would, Elle," he sighed.

"How the hell did you get lost?" I asked.

"I forgot which aisle I left you in," he admitted.

"Well, that makes me feel great, thanks," I said sarcastically.

"You're welcome," he said while closing the trunk before we got into the car and then he started driving to Brett's apartment.

We got up, both of our arms full of groceries. Once we stopped in front of the door, he turned to me, stacked three more bags in my arms. I grunted while keeping balance even though I could not see anything in front of me before he took out the key and opened the door.

He took most of the bags from my arms, which was slightly surprising because I expected him to leave me hanging, before he stepped inside, me following suit.

We set the groceries down before he went and plopped down on the couch and I placed them all in the correct places. "Are you hungry? I'm making lasagna," I said while washing my hands.

"Sure," he shrugged.

I made the lasagna like I said I would and then handed him his plate before sitting on the counter myself. I thought he would go to his room or eat on the couch and act like I wasn't there, but he walked over and sat opposite to me.

"You don't have to keep me company while I eat, I think I'll be fine." He didn't say anything, just continued eating. I looked at him weirdly before grabbing myself a glass of water as we ate in silence. "I can't believe you got lost in a grocery store," I snickered.

"We're still on that?" he sighed.

"I'm telling the others," I laughed.

"No, you're not," he retorted warningly.

"Yes, I am. It makes for a great story. You forget where you've left me, yet somehow you're the one that gets lost," I teased him further.

"I never go to that grocery store, and I haven't been in this town for two years, all right? Give me a break," he rolled his eyes.

"You roll your eyes a lot. Especially at me, it's not very nice," I shook my head disappointedly.

"Neither are you," he replied.

"What have I done?" I asked, now genuinely curious and slightly offended. Because last I checked, I haven't done anything or said anything to him, whatsoever.

"Nothing," he shook his head.

"Why don't you like me?" I questioned.

"Who says I don't like you?" He raised a sharp eyebrow at me.

"Your behavior. I haven't done anything to you and you're still so rude to me. What did I do? And if I haven't done anything, then clearly something is up with you," I sighed.

"I told you, I'm trying to figure something out and I haven't been able to. It's just fucking with my head," he huffed.

"Is this about a girl? Because considering that you're supposed to make me fall in love, that's not a very smart thing to do," I chuckled.

"It's not about a girl," he shook his head.

"Well, whatever it is, I hope you figure it out. For the sake of your mental stability," I shrugged.

I wonder who's been running on his mind long enough to drive him insane like that.
