Chapter 10: Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh

The snow had finally stopped. It was a miracle really, for the past five days it was either heavy snowfall the entire day or small little flurries for a few hours, stopping for another and then starting back up again. But this time, the snow had completely stopped, a true blessing. I had woken up around eight, my mental alarm clock never failing me even when I could sleep in. I got dressed, made myself some breakfast and set out to clear the walkway and the driveway. I sat on the couch, lacing up my snow boots. I recounted how the past few days were; taking in an injured man with odd burns on his back, how his story didn't add up for how he got here. It's a bit worrisome, not completely trusting of Gabriel, he could be a killer for all I know, but hopefully he'll be compassionate when he's better; if that is true.
Getting to the shed was a hassle, having to trudge through 4 feet of snow in below freezing temperatures. Shoving the shed door open, I grabbed a shower and a bag of salt for the walkways. It wasn't going to be easy, shoveling out 4 feet of snow, but it'll make it easier to get around outside if needed. Following my foot imprints back to the house, I started to shovel out some snow to make an outline of where I needed to make a path. Making it to my car, I started to shovel away the snow to reveal the gravel underneath. After clearing away most of the snow, I laid down some salt to finish the job.
Heading back inside, I breathed a sigh of relief to be back in a warm house. Pulling off my beanie, I flung it onto the couch and untied my snow shoes and left them by the door. I hung up my coat and put my gloves on top of my boots. Walking into the kitchen I put the kettle on, getting two cups ready for tea. Going to the fridge I pulled out a loaf of bread, turkey, American cheese and mustard. I made up two sandwiches and plated them. The hissing of the kettle turned my attention to it, turning off the stove I poured the hot water into both cups, letting the tea simmer for a minute. Humming to myself, I made the tea and put the cup on a tray, along with the plate containing the sandwich.
Walking into the hallway, I knocked on the door softly, balancing the tray in one hand.
"Gabriel? Are you up?" I asked, hearing a 'yeah' chime from the bedroom, I opened up the door and went in. Smiling to the man on the bed, I turned on the lights and put the tray on the dresser.
"How are you feeling today? Any better?" I grabbed a first aid kit off the dresser and walked over to the bed.
"I'm doing alright, better than I first got here." He gave a small chuckle, sitting up further on the bed, wincing a bit as he did so. I sat on the edge of the bed, the kit in my lap.
"Well that's good," I smiled at him, "is it okay if I dress your wounds?" He gave a nod and started to take off his shirt until I stopped him, doing it for him instead. Looking over his back, I saw the brown stains along the gauze and mentally scolded myself, 'should've dressed them yesterday.' Taking off the gauze and throwing it into the bin, I looked over the wounds. The gashes were cleaning up nicely, well as nice as gashes could, the infection was slowly going away, along with the redness. The tissue was still tender, scabbing hasn't happened yet. I grabbed a few cotton squares and put some rubbing alcohol on them, dabbing the wounds gently. Gabriel gave a grunt of protest, seeing his hand clench the bedsheet slightly. I redressed the wound, wrapping the gauze around his chest and back tightly.
"Alright, I'll check your legs and be out of your hair." He gave a small smile to me and pulled back the blankets. I pulled down his pants and looked over the bruising on his legs, along with the gash. Taking off the gauze, i cleaned up the wound and redressed it.
   "So, what's the verdict?"
"What?" I looked up at him.
"Am I gonna live doc?" He grinned at me and I rolled my eyes.
"You're gonna be just fine." I pulled his pants back up and laid the covers over him gently. "Oh! I almost forgot, I have to clip your nails." Getting up I went to the bathroom.
"That's a thing?" Grabbing them from the medicine cabinet and coming back, I gave him a look.
"It's always been a thing, since like..forever ." He rolled his eyes.
    "I don't know, I think you're pulling my leg."
"If I were pulling your leg, you'd be crying." He flushed and I gave a small chuckle of amusement. "Alright, let me see your hands." I sat back on the bed and took his hands gently, clipping his nails down to an acceptable length. Gabriel mumbled something underneath his breath as he watched me, a peculiar look on his face.
Wiping off the mess onto the floor, I put the nail clippers back and came back into the room. I sat on the foot of the bed, my body facing Gabriel's.
"So I got the walkway shoveled out, the plows haven't come yet and I can't guarantee they'll come anytime this week or next." He gave me a look.
"How come? Isn't that like important?" I gave a snort of laughter.
"For us, yes. For the government? Not really. They care about the main roads, not some backwoods back roads."
"Well that's dumb." I nodded in agreement.
"Very dumb." I paused, not knowing if I should pester him or not. Considering it's for him wellbeing, I decided to go for it.
"So...are you sure there isn't anyone I can call to get you?"
    "Tired of me already?"
"No I," I laughed softly, "I just want to know if there's someone you can stay with after you get mobile." He stared at me, for quite some time, his eyes unblinking.

                              Gabriel's p.o.v
Shit, fuck, shit. What the hell am I supposed to tell her? I mean I could tell her Cas' number, but what if dumb and dumber are there? Then they're gonna ask her questions and possibly get her killed, cause if their weird Winchester curse. I sighed mentally. I can't lie to her more than I already have.
"Hey? Are you still with me?" I blinked at her, shit..I was just staring in awkward silence.
"Oh..yeah sorry." I gave a quiet chuckle. "There is someone you can call...my brother."
"I thought you said you don't have any connections with your brothers?" Damn, I did say that.
"Technically he's my cousin, but he's basically my brother." She nodded her head and pulled out her phone, handing it to me.
"Here, I'll give you some space and you can call him." She got up and left the room.  Looking down at the phone, I dialed in Cas' number and held up the phone to my ear. Hearing the ringing, I grew impatient until it clicked.
"Hello?" Hearing Cas' deep voice over the receiver made me breathe out a sigh of relief.
"Castiel, little bro. How's it hanging?" I asked jokingly.
"Gabriel?" He asked with confusion and disbelief.
    "The one and only."
"How are you alive? Lucifer killed you." I could hear shuffling in the background, no doubt the Winchester's.
"Yeah well, Lucifer ain't the only one with tricks up his sleeves. Long story short, got kicked out of Heaven, Grace is zip and done." Castiel gave a sigh.
    "How are you contacting me?"
"Funny story actually, this chick found me and taking care of me." Castiel paused, I could almost hear the clogs in his head turning.
"How do you know she's human?"
"Are you seriously asking me that? Of course she is."
" are you sure? It could be a demon, or a shifter, or-
"Or a human? Like I said?" I gave a huff of annoyance, "Come one Cassy, not every being in this world is evil. There are some decent humans out there." I could hear a snort of disbelief, no doubt from Dean.
"..where are you?" He finally asked.
"Somewhere in New Jersey, bum fuck nowhere by the looks of it." Castiel gave a hum of acknowledgement.
"Sam's tracking the call, we'll have your location shortly. Just stay where you are."
"Oh trust me, I will." I rolled my eyes.
"Just when you come, don't bring those two knuckleheads." I could hear the phone shift, an annoyed voice filtering through.
"And why not? You call for Cas to come get you and then you have the audacity to keep us out of it?" Hearing Deans voice I gave a sigh.
"Well, seeing as whenever you and your brother come to the rescue, people always seem to die in the end. I'm not trying to get [your name] killed." I paused and mentally cursed myself.
"Is that who you're with? Real nice Gabriel. You say we being death with us, but you're no better." Before I could answer, he hung up and I was left with silence. I put the phone on the bed and closed my eyes. I really did hate those Winchester's, bunch of pricks. I sighed and called for [your name], who quickly came into the room.
"Everything go okay?" She asked with concern.
"As okay as it could." I chuckled and handed her back her phone. "My brother said he'll be here when the snow clears up." She gave a nod.
"You sure everything's okay?" She took a step forward. I put my hand up.
"Yeah...I don't wanna be rude, but can I be alone for a while?" She looked at me oddly, but nodded.
"Yeah of course..if you need anything just yell" she gave a small smile and left the room. I leaned back against the bed frame and closed my eyes once more. I don't want anything bad to happen to her, but with me being here it puts her at risk. As soon as Castiel gets here I'm leaving, not looking back. I can't let her get hurt. I furrowed my eyebrows, why am I caring so much about her? I gave a shrug, probably just the humanity setting in.

Hey guys..I'm really sorry about the hiatus between the chapter. Life kind of went haywire but hey! Made it back to writing, so that's good. I'm hoping it stays permanent cause I really wanna see this story through. Oh one can hope. Hope y'all enjoyed!
