Leprechaun

Jayden was walking home. He had gone on a walk and decided that it was about time he headed home. It was dark out and the city was rather quiet. He found it a tad bit odd, but it was admittedly a bit relaxing.

That is until he decided to take a shortcut through an alleyway. The first thing he noticed was a mean sounding laugh, then quiet, yet terrified pleas. That seemed to pull him into action. He sprinted down the alley, ready for a fight as the noise got louder with his approach.

He darted around a corner and saw the scene. There was a kid, a boy dangling something from his hand. The thing was crying and pleading, surprising Jayden. He wasn't sure what the kid was torturing, but he wasn't about to let him continue. He darted forward and called out.

"Hey!" He shouted, making the kid jump and spin around to face him. Now this wasn't a big kid. He was maybe five foot, and the fact that he could hold whatever was crying, and even sobbing now, was a shock. The kid seemed startled and dropped the creature before spinning around and running away. Jayden quickly reached out and caught the falling thing before it could hit the ground. He looked at it in confusion as he gently shifted it up right. His eyes widened when he saw what it was. A man about his age, but he was tiny, only about a foot tall.

Jayden set the little guy down and backed up a few steps, giving him space. The little guy seemed to be trying to collect himself and was stumbling around in an attempt to gain balance. He finally stopped moving and just stood there, breathing shakily. Jayden thought the little guy had calmed down some and took a small step forward, but that just sent the man into action.

"G-Get away! Stay-Stay back!" The tiny cried, running away from Jay. He blinked in surprise before breaking from his trance. He followed the small man in a hurry, coming to a stop when the man's foot got snagged on a loose stone. He was stuck, desperately trying to pull himself free. Jayden stopped just behind him, kneeling down. His eyes softened as the man gave up his struggle and went stiff. He was shaking like mad and was now crying softly.

Jayden couldn't take it. He carefully freed the tinys foot and scooped him up. The little guy sobbed quietly and tried desperately to kick the hands away. He was held to Jays chest and shushed softly.

"Hey, it's alright little guy. You're safe now, I won't hurt you. You can relax now, you're safe, you're safe," Jay soothed warmly, huddling him up in his chest and arms in an attempt to calm the man down. It seemed to be working, the tiny man slowly relaxing and even leaning against his chest. Jayden smiled softly and cradled the small creature.

"There you go, little, uh... what exactly are you?" Jay asked, speaking gently. The little man shied back a little. He licked his lips and looked down.

"I-I'm a leprechaun-n...." the tiny answered quietly. It could speak! Jayden smiled reassuringly, a bit surprised.

"Woah. That's amazing, you know. I can't imagine that it's easy, though," Jay said. The man seemed to be calming down, which was good.

"It's not...." the man whispered solemnly.

"Where do you live?" There was a silence, allowing Jay to piece this together.

"You don't have a home, do you?" Jay asked gently. The little man slowly shook his head, refusing to look up. Jayden made an immediate decision and stood up, starting his walk home. The small leprechaun gasped and tried to once again get away, but Jay hugged him into his arms and chest again.

"No, no. It's okay, don't panic. Just relax," Jay soothed as he held the leprechaun closer. The little guy once again went limp in the gentle and comforting hold. "I'm taking you home with me. You can stay there as long as you want to. I won't tell anyone about you, you'll be safe." It was quiet for a moment, but then there was a small tug on Jays shirt. He glanced down to see the leprechaun was gripping his shirt and seemed to be smiling.

"Th-Thank you, th-thank you so much," he whispered as he took a shaky breath. A warm and fuzzy feeling flowed through Jay as he walked more, a happy smile on his face.

"You're welcome, little guy. What's your name?" Jayden asked warmly as he wrapped his jacket around the the leprechaun. The little guy didn't fight it, but instead curled up and nuzzled Jays chest.

"A-Alex. What's y-yours?" The leprechaun asked back. Jayden smiled and pulled his keys from his pocket as his house came into view.

"Jayden. It's nice to meet you, Alex," Jay chidded sweetly. He unlocked the front door and stepped inside the familiar walls. He closed the door behind him as Alex hummed in thought.

"It's nice to m-meet you too, J-Jayden," Alex spoke quietly. Jayden smiled and went to the living room, setting the leprechaun on the couch. He stood up straight and glanced at the clock.

Well, he knew what he was going to do with his time.
