3. Opportunities
As I stared at the blank screen in front of me I sighed in exhaustion. I set down the remote beside me. I had just come back from a mission and wanted some peace and quiet. I laid there limply, waiting.
But I didn't know what I was waiting for.
My mind wandered back to my past that seemed to pop out of nowhere. I thought of everything and felt as if I was reliving it. I wanted to forget my past and start anew. I did get that opportunity.
And I held it tight in my grasp.
~past~
"I can see the future." I breathed out. Right when it left my mouth it felt as if time slowed down. I couldn't breathe, no matter how hard I tried. I was suffocating at the silence that enveloped us. The city sounds were no longer there, it faded so much I could barely hear it. Erwin's eyes traveled up to the rearview mirror and I was in the spotlight. he blankly stared at me and I looked at him, doing my best to hide my fear.
I feared what would happen to me.
I feared what this intimidating man do to me.
I was lost. I didn't know what to do.
I could feel fear creep up behind me and breath on my neck. I felt a drop of sweat trickle down my forehead, splattering on the leather seats. I unknowingly gulped in fear and waited. He was still staring at me with blank eyes. Until they slowly widened and the car jerked to the side as he shouted, "What?!"
Thank goodness I had fast reflexes that stopped me from splattering onto the car door. "S-sorry, this is just - wow. I-I never expected this. After so many possibilities I never knew that this would be one..." He muttered to himself.
"Please - I beg you! Don't take me to scientists or any other creepy people!" I begged. It was pathetic of me but I was very emotional at this point. I would've been on the floor continuously bowing but I obviously can't do that in a car.
"You're not bluffing?" He asked with suspicion. I looked at him, bewildered.
"How do you think I saved us from the crash?" I almost yelled.
"You knew I would be coming?" He asked again. What's with all the questions!
"No! The future flashes whenever it wants. There's no way I would know it would happen. It comes out of the blue!" I sighed with frustration. The suspense of what he'll do was killing me.
"You refer your visions as if it was a real person," Erwin mumbled, most likely to himself. He mumbled as if it was an observation. Butterflies filled my stomach in an uncomfortable manner as I felt myself shiver in fear.
"...you can be useful." He muttered.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
"That job? Yeah, it's a secret organization working for the government. They thought it would be best to have us." He explained. I looked at him with wide (e/c) eyes.
"We are a private organization that consists of hackers, assassins, agents, and many more. With a short staff, we could use some help. You are our help. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You don't accept, we kill you without hesitation or...you can go live in the streets again. Your choice." He said in a serious tone. His piercing blue eyes trailed up to me in the rear view mirror.
"...what would I be if - IF, I join this place...?" I said emphasizing on if.
"You would be working as a Double A. Agent and assassin. We would greatly appreciate your help. You can keep humanity safe instead of living pathetically on the streets." He said in disgust as the car passed by an old, homeless pervert gazing at girls. I shuddered and looked back at Erwin.
"What do you say...?" I breathed in and thought of the outcomes. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. It has many benefits; a home, food, strength, and hope for my life. But if I didn't accept he would kill me or throw me on the streets again. If I told anyone after they spared my life, no one would believe me. They'd look at me as if I needed to go to an insane asylum. It's private, no one would know. That's when I realized. This was the hope that I waiting for. The hope that kept me going. That made me force myself to get up and steal food. To run away from disgusting men. To live my life. I won't be living on the streets anymore. I won't live pathetically.
"What do you say?"
With confidence strapped to my words, my gaze traveled to his blue eyes. A smirk raised upon my lips. I felt a fire burning within me, fueled by hope and determination.
"When do I start?"
~present~
14 years later...
Snapping out of my thoughts and memories I got off my leather couch. I slip into the kitchen to make my favorite drink. When I was done, I took the cup and walked back into the living room. Right when I sat down my doorbell rang. I growled under my breath at the sound that disturbed my peace. I sighed as it rang again, I put my drink down and quietly walked to the door. My hand slowly went to my waist as I neared the door, I took my revolver into my hand and looked through the peek hole. One of the messengers from HQ stood at the door, fear evident in his eyes. I blinked and opened the door suddenly. He jumped at the sound of the door opening.
"What?" I growled. He shivers at the sight of me.
"Uh-um Miss Rose! Commander Erwin Smith has s-sent to me to fetch y-you! He wants you to g-go to headquarters immediately!" He stuttered. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my phone and keys before I locked the door to my apartment. I twirled the keys with my finger and walked down to my car. The messenger scurried to his car and drove the opposite away from me, perhaps he had another task to complete. My (f/c) Mercedes zoomed down the streets, dodging cars left and right. I finally arrived at HQ, which was not far but not close either. Headquarters was found underneath the capitol's building. Right under the government, where we should be. Long ago, an abandoned lab and building was found accidentally. The government had the great idea of creating a secret organization that does their dirty work. Such as; terminating terrorists, assassinating dangerous bosses of many illegal things, finding murders, and shipping important crates to anywhere and anyone. Under us was a place we called, The Underground. A place full of thugs, gangs, prostitution, and black markets. I've only been there a few times but only for jobs or missions, never to gawk at anything.
Besides, what's there to gaze at?
After parking, I opened my trunk and got a bag full of my gear. 3DMG was supposed to go to HQ with their person, one of the required rules of Erwin Smith. I slung the bag over my shoulder and looked at my clothes, judging if they were worthy of going in. I had black leather jeans and boots that were knee-high. A red tank top with the black survey corps jacket. It had our infamous wings of freedom logo on both shoulders and back. My (h/c) hair was down as well. I shrugged and went inside.
As I walked in, the lobby was bustling with people rushing to get to their stations and tasks completed. The receptionist was a middle-aged lady named Faith, she was always kind no matter what. She was one of my friends and a mute. She lost her voice after someone tried to kill her with a knife to the throat. Thankfully, an agent interrupted before she could die but she suffered from a permanent consequence. She's been here for as long as I remember, Faith was in her late twenties when she first saw me. We grew a bond over time and she's always the first person I see when I walk into HQ. She saw me and waved excitedly. I walk up to her and lean on the granite counter. My boots were quiet against the polished white tile floor as sunlight poured in through the wall high windows. (Imagine the Zootopia police station lobby)
"What's up with the rush hour?"I ask cooly as I looked at the panicked workers. She pushed up her glasses and smiled. 'You didn't hear? I thought Erwin would've informed you first.' She wrote on a sticky note. I raised my eyebrow. She smiled and wrote something down. Faith finally gave it to me I read it. Shock engulfed me.
"We got new recruits?!" I almost shouted. She nodded and gave me a grin. It has been awhile since we got new recruits. The last one was about 4-5 years ago. Faith wrote something else down and gave it to me. 'Heard it was two males and one female. I also heard one of the males is just a year older than you.' She wiggled her eyebrows in a suggesting manner.
"Pfttttttt! Don't get your hopes up Faith, I've never got into a relationship before. Not now, not ever." I told her. She stopped her eyebrows but gave me a smirk. I rolled my eyes as she ruffles my hair.
"Even though you're old, you still got the mind of a child," I stated. She pouted and wrote furiously on another sticky note. 'I'm not that old!' It read as she pushed it in my face. I fixed my hair and turned around. I gave her a wave without looking at her as she smiled. "Gotta go before Erwin bites my head off."
I could hear her breaths as if she was laughing behind me. It got quieter and quieter as I walked farther. I slipped into the elevator before it could close. It was filled with so many people I was almost against the doors, it didn't help that I had breasts. I blew my hair out of my face as half of the people left on one floor. When I reached my floor I walked out with my hands in my pocket. I stride down the pure white corridors to Erwin's office and knocked on the door.
"Name and business." Erwin's muffled voice commanded.
"Rose, you called for me?" I said loudly so he could hear. A faint, 'Come in,' could be heard and I opened the door. I then closed it and turned around to see 3 figures on the right couch. Erwin sat in between in his boss chair and boss desk. He beckoned me to sit on the left couch, across from them. A coffee table was in the middle of the two leather couches. Dark oak bookshelves lined the right wall as a board full of plans and missions on the left wall. I set my bag right beside the couch and I caught two pairs of eyes follow my movements as I sat. A man in the middle just glared at the coffee table with legs and arms crossed. He was leaning back which made his dark black hair, styled in an undercut, hang over his steel gray eyes. He had this emotionless face and dark aura around him. While the other man had a cup of tea in his hand as he watched my movements with his pale blue eyes. He had this kind of messy blonde hair and unknown aura around him. Last but not least, a girl who was sitting up straight had this excited look in her jade green eyes as they gazed at me. She had this awe look in her eyes and almost looked like a child with her red hair pulled into pigtails. A kind and loving aura surrounded her. They were all wearing white shirts and black jeans or sweats. That was our extra clothing. Altogether, it was noticeable that they had a bond. Almost family like.
But how can people have a family-like bond if they're not even related?
I leaned back with my arms crossed and looked at the man in the middle. "What did the coffee table do to you?" I ask. His eyes snapped up to me and his glare was now directed at me. Erwin clears his throat and started to speak.
"Rose, these are our new recruits. Isabel Magnolia, Levi Ackerman, and Farlan Church. Levi, Isabel, Farlan, this is (y/n) (l/n) also known as Rose. We use code names for safety precautions and most-wanted workers. We've gathered here today because I wanted you to meet our number one Double-A and get your code names. (Y/n), you can help." He explained. I felt as if there was more but I didn't question it. Then the phone rang he looked at me and as if we had telepathy and I nodded. He went to the corner and spoke quietly into the phone.
"Just pick any name you think is cool or suits you." I said. I didn't really care and I didn't know them so I let them pick for themselves. They murmured amongst themselves and after awhile, nodded, and looked at me. Erwin came back with a frustrated look on his face. He sighed and leaned on the desk as he pinched his nose bridge. It was something he often did if some plans were changed last minute.
"We got some...news. I know the three of you wanted to be in the same training group but it seems our staff is cut short. (Y/n), you remember our recent mission?" Erwin said. I raise an eyebrow. "What about it?"
"It seems that the 2 groups we sent in were annihilated. Only about a couple survived and they're not in the condition to train. You three, I have bad news for you." Erwin explained. I sat there, frozen. The recent mission should've been easy. It was just a search and destroy mission. Two groups, two squad leaders, eight members all gone. This had danger written all over it.
"What's the news?" Farlan asked.
"I'm going to have to separate you," at the news, Farlan and Isabel gasped and glared at Erwin. They started to argue but Levi shut them up. Erwin continued, "Isabel and Farlan will be assigned to Hanji's group." I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. I don't think they'll last long in that maniac's squad. I was lost in my thoughts until Erwin looked at me.
"Levi. You'll be assigned to (y/n)." Erwin finished.
"What?!"
"WHAT?!!!"
