44. Leaving.
"Let go a' me! Let go!" Rosie screamed as a man pulled her through a hallway. "Glenn! Maggie!"
"Stop your squirming, girl. You're lucky we haven't killed you," the man holding her spat, his grip around her arm tightening. As they continued walking, Rosie started to hear gunfire. A lot of gunfire. "Ah, fuck," the man growled.
He switched his hold on her to his left hand so he could use his gun in his right hand. Rosie took this moment to her advantage and ripped her arm out of his grip. She tore the bag off of her head and started running.
"God damnit, kid!" she heard the man shout from right behind her. Before she knew it, she was back in his hold, but this time, she could feel something pressing into the back of her head. "You're gonna cooperate or I'm gonna kill you, do you understand?" the man said. Rosie didn't say anything, but she didn't try to run again.
The man lowered his gun to her back and started leading her towards a crowd. There were bleachers and torches lit to light up what looked to be an arena. People were chatting amongst themselves like everything was good and normal. Rosie couldn't believe what she was seeing. She couldn't say anything about it because every time she made any sudden movement whatsoever, she could feel the man press his gun harder into her spine.
"Sit," the man hissed, shoving her down onto one of the bleachers. He sat down behind her and kept one hand on her shoulder while the other still held the gun to her back. Looking across, Rosie could see Merle looking at her. She glared at him. She hated him now. She really, really hated him.
After a few minutes of waiting, Rosie tensed as the Governor walked out into the center of the arena. He had a white bandage over his right eye now. "What can I say?" he said. The people went silent. "Hasn't been a night like this since the walls were completed. And I thought we were past it- past the days when we all sat, huddled, scared in front of the TV during the early days of the outbreak. The fear we all felt then, we felt it again tonight. I failed you. I promised to keep you safe. Hell, look at me. You know, I should tell you that we'll be ok, that we're safe, that tomorrow we'll bury our dead and endure, but I- I won't. Because I can't. Because I'm afraid."
You're afraid? Rosie thought. You're the one who kidnapped me and my friends and put a gun to my head.
"That's right. I'm afraid of terrorists who want what we have," the Governor shouted. Rosie was so confused. Did he think that they were trying to take from him? From what Rosie could tell, he was trying to take from them. "Who want to destroy us! And worse... because one of those terrorists... is one of our own," the Governor pointed over to Merle. "Merle. The man I counted on, the man I trusted. He led 'em here. He let 'em in. It was you. You lied, betrayed us all!
Rosie stared at Merle, confused, but he looked just as confused as she did. But he also looked angry. He didn't have the knife on his right hand anymore, but Rosie wondered what he would do if he did.
After a moment of looking at Merle, Rosie's attention was directed over to two men pulling someone in with a bag over their head. For a moment, Rosie worried that it was Glenn or Maggie, but then she saw the clothes he was wearing and the tattoo on his chest. It wasn't Glenn, it wasn't Maggie, but it was Daryl.
What is he doing here?!
"This is one of the terrorists," the Governor announced. He pulled the bag off of Daryl's head. "Merle's own brother!"
Daryl stared at Merle and Merle stared back. Rosie realized that it was the first time either one of them was seeing the other alive. After a moment, Daryl looked away from Merle, his eyes scanning the crowd. When his eyes landed on Rosie, a dark bruise under her eye, clad in a white dress, something in his chest started to hurt. As Rosie looked back at Daryl, she wanted to jump out of her seat and help him somehow, but the moment she even made the tiniest move, the man behind her pulled her back roughly, reminding her of the gun pointed at her back.
"So what should we do with them, huh?" the Governor asked, his bandage starting to soak through with blood.
Rosie started to panic as the crowd chanted for him to kill Merle and Daryl. To her left, Rosie could see someone fighting against some of the men. She stood on the tips of her toes to try and see who it was, and when her eyes locked on to a head of curly, blonde hair, she couldn't believe it. Andrea was there. And she was talking to the Governor.
A man came up behind Daryl and cut the binds around his wrists. "I asked you where your loyalties lie. You said here. Well, prove it. Prove it to us all," the Governor said to Merle, blood now trickling down his cheek as if his tears were red. "Brother against brother. Winner goes free. Fight! To the death!"
"No!" Rosie shouted, standing up. The man behind wrapped his arm around her torso, holding her back, while he held his other hand over her mouth. Rosie squirmed and shouted, but it didn't matter. He wouldn't let up.
The crowd started cheering for Merle. "Y'all know me!" he shouted, raising his hand into the air. "I'm gonna do whatever I gotta do to prove," he punched Daryl hard, knocking him to the ground. Rosie struggled even harder in the man's grasp. "That my loyalty," Merle kicked Daryl in the side, "is to this town!"
"Stop it! Stop it!" Rosie was shouting, but her voice was muffled by the man's hand over her mouth. She panicked even more when other men started leading walkers into the arena on sticks, just like the ones Hershel used to use when he kept walkers in his barn.
For a few moments, Daryl didn't fight back, just letting Merle land blow after blow, but then he landed a punch to Merle's nose and got back up to his feet. Daryl went to tackle Merle, but Merle got the upper hand. Merle was leaning over Daryl, their hands around each other's throats. Rosie could see their lips moving, but she couldn't tell what they were saying.
Suddenly, Merle pulled Daryl up to his feet and they stood back to back in the center of the arena, facing the walkers that were closing in on them. One by one, they started pushing away the walkers, until gunshots flew down into the arena, straight through the walkers' heads. The crowd panicked, screaming and shouting as they ran.
"Fuck!" the man behind Rosie shouted as smoke filled the arena. He held her close to his chest with one arm while the other was holding his gun out. He pulled Rosie up and off of the bleachers.
"No! No! Let go a' me!" Rosie shouted, trying hard to kick the man. Smoke filled her lungs and she started to cough. The man kept dragging her forward, but she couldn't see where they were going through the fog. "No!" she kept shouting in between coughs.
Then, all of a sudden, Rosie was thrown to the ground, still in the man's grasp. She felt someone grabbing onto her, pulling her away from the man, but he wouldn't let go. The person pulling her away sent a harsh kick into the side of the man's head and his grip loosened. The person pulling her scooped her up and started running. Rosie couldn't see who it was through the smoke, but she could feel leather on their back as she held onto them, so she hoped that it was Daryl.
Once they got out of the smoke, the person set her down. And she was right, it was Daryl. "Hey, ya ok?" Daryl asked her, raising his eyebrows a little. "Ya ain't hurt?" he asked. Rosie shook her head, trying to catch her breath.
"They're all at the arena. This way," Rosie heard Merle's voice from behind her. She turned around, glaring at him. She didn't want him there, but she knew Daryl wanted to see him. He was his brother. Rosie knew she'd do anything to see Fraser again, so she didn't bother complaining.
Rick had a different idea, though. "You're not going anywhere with us," he growled out.
"You really wanna do this now?!" Merle asked as they all ran behind some buses.
They pushed through a broken part in the wall and started killing some walkers on the other side. Rosie stuck by Daryl's side as they started running. They ran for a long time, none of them saying anything, but after they were sure they were far enough away, they slowed down to a fast walk.
As they were walking, Daryl glanced down at Rosie, who was walking directly by his side. "Hell ya wearin' that for?" he asked. It was a question he'd been wanting to ask since he saw her in the arena. Rosie just shrugged, suddenly feeling uncomfortable again and remembering how exposed her collarbones were. "Who gave ya that bruise?" Daryl asked next, eyeing the dark bruise on her cheekbone.
Before Rosie could say anything, much to her relief, Rick spoke. "Car's just up ahead. Glenn!"
"Rick. Rick!" Rosie could hear Glenn saying. They walked through the trees until Glenn and a woman Rosie didn't know came into view. "Rosie! Oh, thank God. You're ok," Glenn breathed out, weakly stumbling closer.
"Now, we got a problem here. I need you to back up-" Rick started, but the strange woman pulled out a sword.
"What the hell is he doing here?!" Glenn shouted, pulling out his gun at the sight of Merle. The woman ran forward, ready to stick her sword through Merle's heart, but Rick was able to stop her.
"Put it down!"
"He tried to kill me!" the woman screamed, not lowering her sword even when Rick pointed his gun at her.
"Drop the sword!"
"Look what he did! If it wasn't for him-" Glenn shouted.
"He helped us get out of there," Daryl told Glenn, trying to get him to calm down.
"Yeah, right after he beat the shit out of you," Rick reminded him.
"Hey, we both took our licks, man," Merle said.
"Jackass," Daryl murmured.
"Hey, shut up!"
"Enough!" Rick shouted.
"Hey, get that thing out of my face!" Daryl shouted as Glenn kept his weapon pointed.
Merle chuckled from behind him. "Man, looks like you've gone native, brother," he said.
"No more than you; hangin' out with that psycho back there!" Daryl shouted.
"Oh, yeah, man. He is a charmer, I gotta tell ya that," Merle said, smiling. He looked to the strange woman. "Been puttin' the wood to your girlfriend. Big time, baby."
Rosie scrunched her face up with confusion, looking up at Merle. "What's that mean?" she asked.
Merle laughed loudly, a large smile growing on his face. "Well, honey, it means-"
"Man, shut the hell up!" Daryl shouted at him, pulling Rosie's behind him by the arm.
"Calm down, baby brother," Merle said, holding his hands up. "The girl's got a question, why not answer it?"
"She's nine!"
Merle stared at Daryl with an incredulous look on his face. After a moment, his lost expression morphed into another smile. "Look at you, bein' all protective," he chuckled, waving his finger between the two.
"Shut up, man," Daryl said. "Just- who the hell are ya talkin' about?"
"You saw her in there. Andrea," Merle said, looking at the woman with a sword.
"What? Andrea's in Woodbury?" Glenn asked, his voice weak.
"Right next to the Governor," Daryl said, nodding.
The strange woman made a move towards Merle, making everyone jump back. "I told you to drop that!" Rick shouted at her. "You know Andrea?" The woman wouldn't say anything. "Hey, do you know Andrea?"
"Yep, she does," Merle said from his spot against a tree. "Her and blondie spent all winter cuddlin' up in the forest. Mm-mm-mmm. Yeah. My Nubian queen here had two pet walkers. No arms, cut off the jaws, kept them in chains. Kind of ironic, now that I think about it."
"Shut up, bro!" Daryl shouted.
"Hey, man, we snagged them out of the woods. Andrea was close to dyin'."
"Is that why she's with him?" Maggie asked.
"Yeah. Snug as two little bugs. So what you gonna do now, Sheriff, huh? Surrounded by a bunch a' liars, thugs, and cowards," Merle said.
"Shut up!" Rick shouted.
Rosie didn't remember Merle being this much of an asshole last time she saw him in Atlanta. He was rude, yeah, but now he was just plain annoying. Rosie couldn't even count how many times someone had told him to shut up in the past five minutes.
"Oh, man, look at this. Pathetic! All these guns and no bullets in them."
"Merle, shut up!" Daryl shouted one last time.
"Shut up yourself! Bunch a pussies you roll w-" Merle launched himself forward, but before he could make any other move, Rick slammed his gun into the back of his head, knocking him out cold.
"Asshole," Rosie muttered.
The group started heading towards the road, leaving Merle by the tree line and the woman by the car. Rosie was about to follow them, but Maggie stopped her. "Stay here for minute," Maggie said.
Rosie furrowed her eyebrows. "Why?" she asked.
It took Maggie a moment to answer, so she could think of a reason for Rosie to stay behind other than I need to talk to them about what happened without you there. "To keep an eye on her and Merle," Maggie said, nodding towards the woman by the car.
"Ok," Rosie said with a sigh. She wanted to join in on their conversation, but she figured if she had a job to do, she better do it. Leaving Rosie with the woman, Maggie joined the others in the road.
"It won't work," Rick was saying.
"It's gotta," Daryl argued.
"It'll stir things up."
"Look, the Governor's probably on the way to the prison right now. Merle knows how he thinks and we could use the muscle," Daryl reasoned, raising his eyebrows.
"I'm not having him at the prison," Maggie said.
"Do you really want him sleeping in the same cellblock as Rosie or Beth?" Glenn asked.
"He ain't a rapist," Daryl scoffed.
"Well, his buddy is," Glenn said, an angry look on his face.
"They ain't buddies no more. Not after last night."
"There's no way Merle's gonna live there without putting everyone at each other's throats."
"So you're gonna cut Merle loose and bring the last samurai home with us?" Daryl said, gesturing over to the woman by the car.
"She's not coming back," Rick said, his hands on his hips.
"She's not in a state to be on her own," Maggie disagreed.
"She did bring you guys to us," Glenn added.
"And then ditched us," Rick reminded him.
"At least let my dad stitch her up."
"She's too unpredictable," Rick argued.
"That's right. Why the hell'd ya leave Rosie with her?" Daryl grumbled as they all looked over at Rosie and the woman. The woman was leaning against the car while Rosie was sat on the ground with her knees up to her chest.
"I wanted to talk to you without her listenin' in. We don't know what happened with her when we got there," Maggie said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"We were separated until the Governor brought her in and threatened to beat her, asking where our camp was. He put a gun to her head and we gave in. Then they left us in there and she wouldn't talk," Glenn said, glancing back and forth between Rosie and Maggie.
"You need to talk to her," Maggie said, looking at Daryl.
"She'll come around," Daryl said, shaking his head a little.
"Daryl-"
"No. Point is, we don't know who the woman is. But Merle, Merle's blood," Daryl said, avoiding Maggie's eyes. He was trying to push his worries about Rosie out of his mind. He had to focus on his brother.
"No, Merle is your blood. My blood, my family is standing right here and waiting for us back at the prison," Glenn said, his jaw clenched.
"And you're part of that family. But he's not. He's not," Rick said.
Daryl looked over to the woods and saw that Merle had woken up and was standing back up to his feet. "Man, y'all don't know," he grumbled. No one said anything for a moment as Daryl looked back and forth between Merle, them, and Rosie. He sighed. "Fine. We'll fend for ourselves," he said.
"That's not what I was saying," Glenn said, holding his hand out a little.
"No him, no me," Daryl said, clutching his crossbow.
"Daryl, you can't do that," Maggie said.
"It was always Merle and I before this."
"Don't," Maggie said.
"Are you serious?" Glenn asked, looking at Daryl with wide, annoyed eyes. "You're just gonna leave like that?"
"You'd do the same thing," Daryl said.
"What about Rosie?" Glenn asked him, gesturing over to where Rosie was sitting.
Daryl looked over at Rosie, thinking. After a moment, he sighed and looked away. "She's a tough kid. She'll get over it." No one said anything for a moment, just staring at him. They couldn't believe what he was saying. Daryl sighed and started walking away. "Say goodbye to your pop for me."
"Daryl, are you serious? Daryl!" Glenn said following after him.
"Daryl, stop!" Maggie shouted at him, making everyone go silent. Daryl froze a second, reluctantly turning around to look at her. "You do not get to leave right now," Maggie snapped, "You can't leave Rosie like that. You need to talk to her about what happened."
"She's got one bruise. Like I said, she's tough. She'll get over it," Daryl said, shaking his head.
"She was in a room, alone with the Governor, and came out of it wearing different clothes, Daryl. She doesn't even understand what that means!" Maggie said, glaring at Daryl.
Daryl stared at Maggie for a moment, unsure of what to say. "Doesn't gotta be me," he said, shaking his head. "I ain't her dad."
With that, he started walking away again, Rick hurrying after him. "There's gotta be another way," Rick said.
"Don't ask me to leave him. I already did that once," Daryl said and continued walking towards the car. Seeing him coming, Rosie stood up to her feet, confused. She followed after him as he passed her, opening up the trunk. "No him, no me. That's all I can say," she heard Daryl saying.
"What're you doin'?" Rosie asked, trying to see into the trunk. Rick put his hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off. "What's happenin'?" she asked, furrowing her eyebrows. Daryl didn't say anything, he just pulled his bag out of the car. "Hey, what're you doin'? Where are you goin'?" Rosie asked quickly, anxiety filling her stomach.
Daryl stopped and knelt down in front of Rosie. He pulled something out of his bag and handed it to her. "Lady said ya dropped this," Daryl said, handing her the item. It was the Parasaurolophus that Glenn had given her at the store.
"What're you doin'?" Rosie asked, keeping her eyebrows furrowed as she took the toy from his hand.
"I gotta go," Daryl said, looking Rosie in the eye.
"What? Why? For how long?" Rosie asked quickly, the anxiety creeping up her stomach and into her lungs, making her breathing get a little quicker.
"They don't want Merle at the prison. Don't got a choice," Daryl said.
"So, you- you're not comin' back?" Rosie asked, her voice higher than it usually was.
"Not unless they change their minds."
"Well, I can- I can come with you," Rosie said, looking towards Merle in the forest. She didn't particularly like Merle at the moment, but she'd rather have Daryl stay, even if it meant Merle had to stay, too. She took a step towards where Merle was in the woods, but Daryl stopped her, holding her still.
"No," Daryl said, shaking his head. "It ain't safe." He was already beating himself up for allowing her to go on that run, he wasn't about to let her leave the safety of the prison just because she didn't want to have to miss him.
"I don't care," Rosie said, the anxiety creeping up her lungs to form a lump in her throat. "I want to come with you."
"You can't," Daryl told her, shaking his head. He could see her eyes start to get glassy as they filled up with tears, and it pulled at his heartstrings, but he couldn't let her come with and he couldn't leave Merle behind.
"Kid wants to come, let 'er come," Merle's scratchy voice rang out. Looking to her left, Rosie could see Merle watching with a strange grin across his face.
"Shut up, Merle. It ain't up to you," Daryl snapped at Merle before turning back to Rosie, his hands on her shoulders. "You can't come, Ro. It ain't safe."
"I don't care!" Rosie said, her voice breaking a little.
"You're stayin' here and ya listen to Rick, ya hear me?" Daryl said, looking her in the eye again.
"No," Rosie said. Daryl tried not to feel bad as he stood back up and started walking off towards Merle in the woods, but his chest hurt. "No! No!" Rosie shouted. She tried running after him, but Rick caught her arm in time and pulled her back, holding her back against his chest. "No! Daryl!" Rosie shouted, struggling in Rick's hold as tears started to fall from her eyes.
Daryl spared one last look at the group when he reached Merle, who threw his arm around him, before walking away together.
"Daryl! Don't leave me!" Rosie screamed, thrashing in Rick's arms. "No! Please! Come back!" she shouted, but he didn't. He wouldn't come back.
