Chap. 5 - Safety Day Pt. 1
On the front page, Chanelle winked at the camera. The title read 'FOX NEWS - Daily Gazelle Wages WAR Against ALL Carnivores.' Words such as 'feral', 'deer', 'figure-head' popped up. A quote under Chanelle's picture said "I want feral carnivores to be a thing of the past!" She looked so proud in her photo. It irked the fox who wrote the page. Underneath her, words such as 'false news', 'allegedly', and 'Safety Day Event' were the most important.
There was even a picture of Cooper, who looked nervous to be in the paper. That was all the better. The fox knew that this made him appear guilty. It made Chanelle look cocky. That guilty face had its own quote. "I've never been more than the deer on the debate team. I hope to help all with this cause." What lies. The fox knew better. He knew they planned to destroy the carnivore's reputation and cause a civil war between carnivores and herbivores. He wouldn't stand for it.
"This has to get the word out. Animals need to know. I knew this was coming. Ever since Chanelle introduced herself to that little buck." The fox took the paper off the press. He placed it aside, prepared to print hundreds of copies. He was better at his job than anyone else at this school. He knew he was better than that dopey gazelle.
"She's too good at making males do her dirty work, the filthy creature. She's more interested in getting rid of carnivores and playing around with males than in running her actual paper." He picked up the pen and pad beside him. He didn't need much. Just unbiased news. As a strict omnivore, and one who was quite intelligent, he was the best suited for the job.
"I will get the truth out there. Like a real editor does." He barged into the dorms. He had to find someone. "Who cares if she doesn't care about real news? I just need one more interview. Then her darkness will be revealed." He knocked. "Even if it kills me."
The door in front of him flew open. A black head popped out. Vibrant, friendly green eyes honed in on the fox. "Noah Silva? " The fox held out a paw. He was tiny next to this panther.
"Yes sir!"
"Is that Portuguese?" Small talk was the best way to get one's interviewees to trust oneself. Fortunately, this cat was extroverted.
"It is! And you are?" The feline shook the paw. He was sold!
"Nyx Carlson. Lead editor of FOX NEWS here at University." The little omnivore watched as the feline's whiskers twitched. They did that when they were confused, he thought.
"You mean journalist, right? Editors don't do interviews." Yep, there was the confusion. The topic was a source of embarrassment. Still, the fox needed the panther to trust him enough to discuss personal concepts.
"Yes, I'm aware. I'm conducting this interview because I... am a little, eh, short-staffed." As far as he was concerned, his girlfriend was the only one in the news room besides himself. And it was only ever if he took a pen of hers and forgot to return it.
"Welp, come on in I guess! Just let me get a shirt on. You can look around if you'd like." Noah invited the fox with open arms. That was all that mattered. Nyx observed his surroundings the entire time. He looked for escape routes. The windows, the door, and that was it. It was a small dorm, like all the others. He was here alone with a much larger carnivore that could both outmaneuver, and outrun him. Neither of those exits was safe. This was it. Do or die.
At first, he thought 'this is a college, the guys do nothing but sit and eat all day'. His host proved him wrong. Like all carnivores, the panther was naturally built. He had powerful muscles that rippled across his body. The lack of fat on his body showed he probably worked on it instead of wasting it away with junk food. That made survival seem less likely if the fox struck a nerve. Which he planned to do. Oh well.
Something on the counter caught Nyx's eye. He swung in that direction, to confirm his suspicions. "Venison blood?" He wasn't sure whether he meant to question it so loudly.
"Yeah, it's my favorite drink. They sell it at most stores. It's just really expensive." The panther rummaged through his things. The fox noticed a large scar across his back. That could make for a story.
He cleared the thought from his head. He wasn't here to write about huge markings. "I apologize. I must be mistaken." He hated being wrong.
"How's that?" Noah pulled a shirt over his torso. The scar, now hidden away, would not be the topic of his discussion today.
"The Noah Silva I want to interview, he lives with a deer." Nyx shielded his face behind his clipboard. Not because he was scared, but because he was embarrassed. His street reputation would be ruined in an instant if an extrovert with many friends joked about his idiocy all day. "I should've assumed this was the incorrect place when a panther opened the door."
"Nope. You were right, Mr. Fancy-words. You know, my deer pal talks like you." Noah took a swig from his drink, then smiled at Nyx. "You can talk like a normal guy, you konw. For interviews. It makes people feel, I dunno, understood? I gave up telling Cooper that a long time ago."
The panther apparently loved to talk. He spoke on and on. Nyx could hardly hear him. He was focused on the fantasy in his mind. Noah was a panther who drank deer blood, he was a friendly carnivore, and he was very confident. Cooper was a deer himself, about to do a speech against carnivores, and was very timid. Not only were they best friends, but they lived together, in the dorms? "This has the potential to be the story of a lifetime!" He blurted in excitement.
Noah laughed it off. "Look, dude, if you think he's betrayed by my drinking habits, you're wrong." The panther still didn't get it. Nyx should've known a feline wouldn't put all the pieces together.
"Tell me," The fox tucked the clipboard under his arm. He felt a wide grin cross his face. "Do you know what he's talking about at tomorrow's 'Safety Day', when he gives the speech at the end?" His eyes followed the panther's tail as it swished. He struck a nerve. Perfect.
"The dangers of feral carnivores. No big deal." Noah's back was turned to the fox, but Nyx could still faintly hear the snarl in the cat's throat. He could see rippled muscles on his snout. When Noah's shoulders tensed, there was no way to hide the anxiety. He reeked of it.
"I don't think you understand, Mr. Silva," Nyx had probably already gone too far. He should've toned it down after that first question. But he had more to ask. He had more to know. He had to drive into that nerve with full intensity. "The daily gazelle wants to wage war against carnivores. With Cooper as their voice. I know he's not an idiot. He's just shy. So he knows what he's doing. You know what I mean?" The fox crept behind the panther. He wanted to get the most real reaction he could pry.
