Chapt. 6 ~ To Fit In

(Y/n)'s POV

~ • ~

My eyes felt heavy as I slowly opened them. A weight was on my chest and I didn't recognize the look of the ceiling. Where am I?

"MISS HUMAN! IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP!" I heard a familiar voice shout. Opening my eyes and sitting up slightly, I found Papyrus to be the weight on my chest. I felt embarrassed, scared, and confused.

"P-Papyrus...? Um... what...?" I stammered in surprise and shock. Papyrus got off of me and I sat up and looked around. This was definitely not my apartment.

"FATHER MADE BREAKFAST!" Papyrus answered what he thought my question was. I take a minute to regain myself before just trying to accept and internalize what was going on. Then I stood up and looked at him. "FOLLOW ME!"

He then marched over to the kitchen and I followed, still tired and out of it. Though, he suddenly turned and pointed toward the table.

"GUESTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE KITCHEN! PLEASE TAKE A SEAT AT THE TABLE!" Papyrus shouted. It caught me off guard. My eyes glanced up at Gaster who just smiled and nodded his head toward the table.

"Alright..." I replied, still tired. I go to the table and take a seat. Waiting to be served I guess. I saw Sans also sitting at the table, but he was pretty much asleep.

Either way, I kept my gaze elsewhere. I thought about my parent's lunch plan. Wondering what would happen. Usually when they arranged a lunch with me they had bad news or a gift that is entirely unnecessary.

"BREAKFAST IS SERVED!" Papyrus announced as him and Gaster handed out plates and silverware. It was spaghetti. Not that I'm complaining, just surprised.

"Th-thank you." I stuttered, still trying to snap out of my dazed state.

"YOU ARE WELCOME HUMAN!" Papyrus exclaimed before granting me a wide smile. I smiled back and began to eat once everyone else did. It was strange to watch them eat, but I ignored it.

"Did you sleep well?" Gaster asked, making me perk up my head. I swallowed what food I had in my mouth.

"Y-yes... thank you, by the way. I-I didn't mean to fall asleep..." I apologized, awkwardly. That probably sounded weird to the children...

"It's perfectly fine. It was 3 am." He said with a shrug. Thaaaaat probably sounded weirder.

The rest of breakfast was rather quiet. Both of us didn't know what to say I guess. Soon we were all finished.

"Alright, boys, go get ready." Gaster said, rising up from his seat. The two nodded, Papyrus dashed off up the stairs and Sans disappeared in the blink of an eye.

"Wh-where...?" I began, staring at the seat, confused.

"He teleported. Every since he's gotten the hang of it, he teleports whenever he wants to." Gaster replied. He answered so casually it made me feel awkward and rude.

"R-right... C-can I help with the dishes?" I asked, feeling obligated since I did accidentally insert myself into his home. He paused and nodded.

"If you'd like." He replied. I grabbed the dishes and the two of us went into the kitchen. He put the leftovers away and I cleaned the dishes.

It was nice to work together in a home environment. It was a comfort I only felt when my parents were home. I guess I was smiling, because when I finished and turned away, Gaster had a curious brow bone raised and a curious grin.

"You seem happy?" Gaster said, a questioning tone in his voice. He must've found something weird in his remark, because he blushed(?) and tried to fix it. "N-not that you don't seem content at other times."

"I understand what you mean. I-it's just... I don't know. B-being here reminded me of something and I-I guess just made me smile." I explained, rubbing my arm nervously.

"Oh?" Gaster questioned, still curious. I shrugged and brushed my hair back.

"Whenever my parents were home, we always cooked together. My mother would sing and my father would help me with anything I was struggling with. It was rare though, for that to happen. So this just reminded me of that..." I said, smiling still. I take a glance at the time. "I should get going. You're probably busy and I have somewhere to be in an hour or so. Uh... thank you for your hospitality."

"It wasn't a problem at all, (Y/n)." When he said my name I felt a shiver run through my body. It was strange but pleasant.

"S-see you around."

Gaster walked me out and sent me off with a smile. He was nice to say the least. It was nice to finally have some friends. Gaster and Toriel. I didn't get to speak with Asgore much so I couldn't consider him. And Papyrus is a child, so that might seem strange.

Peeking down at my phone, I catch a message from my mother. It was just a notice that they would be arriving soon. I quicken my pace and soon made it out of the neighborhood I was in and walked down the road.

Gaster had a nice area. There was a school right outside the neighborhood and there was the Needs and Wants store and of course a few restaurants here and there.

My apartment building was soon in sight. A twinge of relief came over my body. I had tried to ignore it, but I got so many weird stares on the way back. Maybe I should wear a matching contact? So I can fit in.

No... I shouldn't. I shouldn't have to change for those around me, but it's so hard. I was just something for people to look at. I'm sure that's what the monsters felt as well when they were freed from the underground and even now people still stare at them.

I went to take off my bag only to realize I didn't have it. I face palm and sigh. I'm such an idiot. I removed my phone from my pocket and sent Gaster a message.

"I left my bag at your house. Can you message me when you're available so I can retrieve it?" I run my fingers over the top of my doorway and a key falls onto the floor. I'm always prepared for silly things like this to happen.

I grew up so sheltered in my home, I'm so reckless when it comes to the most basic things. It's not like there was anything important in the bag. It was just my library card, the book, my bottle, with now old tea, and a small journal where I write down my emotions.

Soon I entered my apartment and shut the door. Locking it, I release a sigh that I'd been holding for way too long. I quickly took my medication and drank some water. I was only a little late to taking it so it's fine.

Remembering that my parents were still an hour away, I gathered some things so I could take a quick shower. While I was waiting for the shower to be ready, I cleaned up a little. I went back into the bathroom and stripped, pretty much throwing myself into the shower.

Knowing me, I probably got a bruise on my side. I washed my hair with only shampoo and then washed my body, including my face. I didn't have enough time for everything else. Though, I did brush my teeth after I got out of the shower.

I scrambled to my room to put some nice clothes on. Knowing my parents they picked the nicest place in town. They just like spending their money. They do like smaller businesses, but they also have an image to keep up. So when they have to sit down and talk with someone they choose grander more expensive places.

I didn't particularly care though. Apart of me just hoped that it wasn't one of the bigger restaurant waitress positions I applied to and got rejected at because of my mismatch eyes. I shook my head and shrugged.

"I shouldn't care about those things! I mean Gaster didn't judge me on it! At least he didn't say anything! And neither did Toriel!" I say out loud, not knowing how loud though. I shook my head and put on a nice dress my mother had bought for me before I left and looked in the mirror.

"This is the least inappropriate one and it still feels super revealing!" I sigh. The dress was red and off the shoulder with laced sleeve. It was fitted at the top and flowing at the bottom. The dress went down to my knees and showed off my legs. "Whatever..."

I go to the bathroom once more and apply some light makeup with a matching red lipstick. I did my hair in (style) so it wouldn't mismatch the outfit. I put on the matching red heels and waited. My mother was crazy about matching so I usually was.

I just knew that my parents were going to come with gifts and money to spoil me even more. Sometimes they give me gift cards which I usually give to the homeless. They knew that I usually did that and they didn't mind. They donate to charities monthly and help out any homeless person they meet.

It was rare for them to give the homeless individuals jobs, but sometimes they did. I may be spoiled, but I grew up in a home of kind hearts.

A knock was soon heard and I scrambled to my feet and go to the door. Once I'm there, I take a deep breath, look at my reflection on the dark screen of my phone, and once I'm sure I look alright I opened the door.

"(Y/n)! How wonderful to— Wow... you look absolutely beautiful." It was Toriel. How could I forget?! She was dropping off a pie for me to welcome me to the town.

"I-I— o-oh— h-hi— uh... th-this is nothing. M-my parents ar-a-are-are coming over and they like l-looking fancy due to their b-business and such so... yeah..." I stammered, blushing entirely embarrassed.

"Well you look lovely. I'm sorry dear, I have to get going. So here you are." She hands me the pie which I take from her with a smile. "Have a good day with your parents~"

"Th-thank you Toriel!" I called after her as she walked away. I practically slam my door shut and groan with embarrassment.

I know I looked nice, but I just didn't want to put the "hey I'm rich" expression onto people not to mention it isn't my casual look. I'd love to dress nicely everyday but I have no one to impress and I don't really care what I wear because either way I'll be judged.

A sigh escapes my lips as I put the pie in the oven just to keep it nice for when I return. Maybe my parents would like to try some?

Knock-knock-knock!

"Speaking of which..." I mutter before turning back toward the door. "Coming!"

I go to the door and look through the peep hole this time. My parents are there, smiling widely at each other with soft gift boxes in their arms. Sigh.

I open the door and the two waddle in, set down the gifts then hug my tightly. My mother hugs the tightest despite being a tiny thin woman. My father on the other hand a tall man with a dad bod and slightly muscular arms, feels like a teddy bear.

"Oh darling I missed you so!" My mother said in a chirpy voice. It made me smile as I hug her back.

"I've only been gone for a week." I reply with a laugh. My mother stayed on me whilst my father moved back slightly.

"No matter how long we're away from you we miss you dearly, (Y/n)." He said, his voice wasn't deep, but still masculine. Both my mother and father had very welcoming vibes despite being super well dressed.

My mother wore tighter clothes despite being insecure about how thin she is. She says it makes her feel a little more confident when embracing her thinness. She was still trying to eat better to get more meat on her bones. Though it never bothered me.

"Thank you, dad." I reply with a smile. My father on the other hand loved suits. He liked how they looked on him, plus it exhibited a serious nature, despite him being a not very serious man. They make him feel like he's in charge. (But my mother is actually the one in charge.)

"We got you some lovely gifts for you and your new home! We're so proud of you!" My mother said, finally letting go and taking a step back.

"Thanks momma." I reply, smiling. "Does that mean you want me to open them now?"

"Preferably."

"Alright." I giggle and take a seat and they hand me one right after the other. As I suspected it was the basics: candles, dresses, shoes, books (always love those), sketchbooks, and small decorations (like fake plants).

"Thank you both. I'll be sure to light these delicious things while I'm reading." I say with a grin. My mother rolled her eyes and laughed. My father chuckled.

"Well we have our reservation in 2 hours, so how about you tell us about how things have been?" My father questioned, sitting down on the couch. He did the dad hand fold while sitting leaned forward. My mother sat beside him and rested her hands on his shoulders, though she never applied any pressure.

"Well..." I begin. "I met someone. Well, some people, the first day I moved in. I had to go to the store and while I was there I lost control of the cart and it ran into his—"

"Oooh~ him~?" My mother purred, wiggling her brows suggestively.

"Yes. It was a he. I ran into his cart and apologized. He was really nice about it, even though I scared his kids."

"Awe! He's married isn't he!" My mother pouted, interrupting once more. I rolled my eyes and shake my head.

"No he's not. He might be seeing someone though, I haven't asked. He left in a hurry right after though. But I bumped into him again at the coffee shop and he joined me at the table to talk so that was nice of him... then later that day one of his sons ran away from their babysitter, the lovely woman I'll talk about next, who I then had to return and spent the rest of my day with. I ran into him again at the library—"

"Late night visits again (Y/n)?" Father asked to which I nodded. "We can get you a therapist—"

"No it's fine dad. I'm fine. I talked to him a little about things and I asked him if he could ever show me the underground and he did. It was beautiful, b-but I fell asleep on the couch so he took me back to his place and let me sleep there. A-and that's it about him."

"Oh! Is he a monster?" My mother questioned, suddenly catching on.

"Yes, he's a skeleton." I replied, internally hoping for a positive reaction.

"That's wonderful! We've had so many monster clients recently! They are so kind!" She hummed. So clearly she didn't have any negative feelings about monsters.

"What about Toriel? Is she a monster too?" My father asked, sounding genuinely curious. He smiled when I nodded. "That's great, sweetheart. Now what's Toriel like?"

"She's a very worrisome, nurturing woman. She had a child of her own who passed away, but she did adopt another one, who was the one who freed them from the underground. I-I haven't met them yet but I'm sure they're nice. She has a husband named Asgore, he seemed nice but we didn't talk much. Toriel actually had just dropped off a pie before you arrived. M-Maybe when we get back from lunch we can share it?"

"Oh that's a wonderful idea!" My mother said happily.

"As much as we'd love to stay longer after lunch, we might have to head back to see a client. So don't keep your hopes up, hun." My father commented sweetly. Though it was bitter to my ears. I knew they had to work, they were a very worrisome couple themselves, but sometimes I wish they'd make more time for me. I knew they loved me, but sometimes it doesn't feel like they do.

"That's alright, dad. At least we'll spend lunch together." I reply with a faltering smile.

We spent the last hour talking just about anything we could. My mother tried to pry on Gaster, trying to see if I had a crush on him, which even if I did, I would never tell her. Either way, I enjoyed the rest of that hour with my parents.

I began to wonder what I was even worried about earlier.

But when we got up to leave I remembered.

Whatever...

Time to go fit into a new crowd once more.

~A/n~

I'm back!

Hi—

Hey—

How you doing?—

Did you enjoy?—

My deepest apologies for being absent for so long, but your comments have motivated me to update this, so thank you for that!

To make up for my long absence, I wrote this chapter much longer than the others and hope to continue writing long chapters for the rest of the book (but no promises).

This story might have long waiting periods between updates because sometimes it's very difficult for me to focus on these.

Even if they bring me so much joy (including the comments you all leave for me), I still get stressed when I try to face them when I'm not feeling inspired.

So thank you all for granting me the inspiration and motivation.

You might see things formatted differently in the next chapter, but thank you for all your support.

I hope you enjoyed this chapter as well as the rest of the story!
