Ten word prompt
So basically this competition was ten words, and you have to make it into some sort of story of any genre.
Hope you like it :)
"It's not my fault!" I exclaim as I hurry my footsteps to follow her brisk pace through the weaving, polished white halls. "It's not like I mean-"
"It was a houseplant, Kat! A houseplant!" She spins on her heels to face me, and I'm secretly glad she stopped before I'd have a stroke. I snigger slightly, struggling to maintain myself.
"H-How was I supposed to know she'd scream?" I reply, almost bursting out into laughter midway through the sentence. Hayley gives me a pointed look.
"You should have known better. You should have seen the signs! Why did you think she didn't have any? Huh?" She's in my face now, and I roll my eyes.
"I thought she hadn't had time to buy any yet! She's only been here a week, so I thought I'd do the decent thing and buy her something! It was only a tiny cactus. Its pricks are the size of half a fingernail."
"Do you not recall high school at all?!" Hayley throws her arms up.
"What? Should there be something I remember?" I ask, confused.
"Grade eight, summer camp. The volleyball incident!" My eyes widen and I splitter, struggling to form a coherent sentence. She tucks a stray strand of chocolate hair behind her ear in frustration, and I bite my lip. Now is NOT the time! My mind tells me...
"W-Well..." I struggle, then get an idea. "You were the one who insisted we tell her today! I wanted to do it next week when everyone is there!" I accuse her, positing a finger.
..too bad I never listen to my head.
"Me?! We had to tell them sometime, Kat!" She exclaims, then sighs, the tension leaving her shoulders. "I...I couldn't wait any longer...I can't stand waiting! You know that! And with something as big as this?! I was scared of what she'd say. She is our best friend." She whispers, rubbing her arm and looking away. I frown slightly, reaching forward to cup her cheek, and gently lift her head to look at me.
"I know, Hay. I've been scared too. We're a lesbian couple, we're gonna get some looks. That's why I kept putting this off. But did you see her face when you blurted it out?" I examine her confused blue eyes and smile slightly. "She was beaming. She was happy for us...until I 'wielded' the cactus. I blamed you right now because...well, you know how I am. I panic!" I exclaim, and she laughs, taking my hand and rubbing her thumb across.
"I know. I know you do, Kat."
And just like that, the argument is over, and we find ourselves walking back to our apartment in silence.
When we get there, we're surprised to see a big box sitting in front of our door. We look around in confusion. "Surely they wouldn't just leave this here," I comment, peeing left and right. "To me, that's a big red flag, with the words I'm dodgy! In bright yellow. Maybe it's for someone else?" I suggest.
"It's for us. Says 'Hayley and Kathrine. Enclosed is the deluxe luxury package en route through China and Europe to ensure it's safety...' huh."
"Seems genuine," I mutter sarcastically, fishing my key out of my coat pocket to unlock the door. I shove it open with my foot. "Yeah..we never ordered a package!" Hayley mutters as I step into the apartment and flick on the lights.
"Should we open it?" I ask her, stepping aside as she shoves it into the room, it comes up to our knees, and we're 5'9. She shrugs.
"Well...what would we usually do in this situation?" She replies. We slowly make eye contact, staring for a few silent seconds as if in a trance, before we both leap on the box, laughing and shoving as we try to be the first to pen it.
Eventually, we somehow get it open, and to our utmost surprise, a black slick cat runs out, hissing at us before hiding under the couch. I blink.
"Uh...now we have a pet?" I remark, cocking my head in confusion.
Hayley just laughs and shuts the door before our little surprise can run out.
"Maybe it's a test from the gods," She teases, "To trial our relationship!" I squat her shoulder as I move past, pulling some mince from the freezer.
"Well, in that case, we better make sure our little test passes!" I exclaim, and Hayley grabs a bowl...

"It's number C!" I exclaim, pointing to the tv screen. Hayley laughs at me, shaking her head as the cat stirs slightly in her lap, but remains asleep.
"No honey. It's A!" She responds, petting the cat. You see, we're watching a back to back five hour special of a trivial show. It's sort of our Sunday night thing.
I roll my eyes, grabbing reaching for a slice of pizza...before I realise it's gone. I get up to go to the kitchen for the other box, talking as I go.
"It's C."
"No, A!" She calls to me as I stand in the kitchen.
"Answer's C!" I'm nearly telling now, as I grab something to cut the pizza with.
"Its A!" Hayley sings, walking into the kitchen.
"NO, IT'S C!" I shout, glaring at her.
"PUT THE KNIFE DOWN!" She yells, but she's laughing. I glance at the long black-handled appliance before throwing it into the sink with a huff.
"Fine, fine. Let's go do something before I stab the couch!" I joke, taking a peek at the tv as it displays the right answer is actually B.
"Where are we going?" Hayley asks me as we head towards the door. I smirk at her.
"It's a twist!" I tell her, opening the door for her.
She shoots me a confused look. "You know...The Prestige. The twist!" She continues to look at me blankly and I throw up my hands. "The movie! Don't tell me you've never watched it! That movie is so crazy it's hard to keep track of what's going on!" I exclaim as we step into the hall.
"Sorry, haven't seen it." Hayley grins at me innocently. I sigh. Another movie I'll have to force her to watch!
"Alright, well, where we're going, is a surprise!"
"You're taking me on another date? Should I be wearing something nicer?" She examines her baggy jeans and her favourite blue T-shirt. I raise an eyebrow.
"One, you look perfect to me...and two, take a look at what I'm wearing! Do you really think I care what you look like?!" I gesture to my Trackie-dacks and my fifty-year-old shirt.
She laughs. "At least you're comfy." She replies as we head for the elevator...
"So..." I begin once the elevator doors close behind us. "What's better? Chocolate Ice cream or-"
"Chocolate. There is no other option, Kat!" Hayley replies like it's the most obvious thing in the world, rolling her eyes. "So, where are we going?"
I smirk at her. "Nowhere." And in one slick moment, with one simple movement, we're set for at least fifteen minutes in this elevator together.
"You had to press All of the buttons? ALL of them?!"
"I felt obligated to!" I confess in a royal accent. She almost smiles, before frowning deeply.
"You know I get travel sick!" Hayley complains.
"Ah, I can make you forget about it!" I smirk at her simply. She shoots me a confused look.
"How?" I glance from her eyes to her lips.
"I have a pretty good idea..." I trail off and press my lips to hers. Her hands slip to my blonde hair as she kisses back, and I feel her smile into the kiss.

A little random, but it's a competition and I decided to write this (actually rather boring) entry for it. Complain if you must, but that's why I made a separate book for it!
If anyone is interested in the contest, here's the link to the book: https://my.w.tt/QqjM9kZtV4
See ya!
