chapter ten, bad news?
Hughes picks up a file and holds it out to Roy.
"Thirty cases, all the same... how nobody made the connection earlier astounds me," he says
"All the kids were between the ages of two weeks and three months, far too young to have to go through what it is suspected they went through," he sighs "they were all found in back Alleys or side streets usually ones that are not used much, all were found with nothing but a worn down basket, blanket and a small toy. Each kid was found dead, most often from hypothermia caused by being left outside in the cold with little warmth, some starve, two or three of the older ones had signs that they had been mildly abused before being abandoned but all the same each and every child was left on purpose, most likely to die." Hughes explains sadly. His eyes watering as every now and then they flicked to the photo frame of his beautiful family, with an image of his baby girl Alicia and his loving wife Gracia.
"That's horrible, who would do that... why would they do that," Alphonse mumbles quietly.
Ed looks down at Rowena and gulps.
"So... if we hadn't of found Rowena that night... she would have died?" He asks in a soft voice.
"It is extremely likely, she would have been very sick at the least. I suspect that whoever left her there had not long left before you found her," Hughes says
"she would have at least had a cold or possibly even the flu if she had been there any longer, you really were her hero Edward, and I hope we find the monster who did this so we can get justice for all those other children who were not so fortunate," mustang says standing taller as he looks to Hughes with narrow eyes.
"I'll Send over some of the files I still have and have Falman and Furey can come over and assist you, we will find this bastard," he adds with a low and hostile tone.
Maes nods and turns to the baby in Ed's arms. A smile making its way to his face.
"So... Rowena? Quite a beautiful name you have given her," he chimes.
"Yeah, I did think about maybe naming her after our mother or Nina but... I think that would make it more painful if I ever had to give her up to someone else," he explains with a frown.
"That's fair, Rowena suits her," Maes grins.
"Anyway back to this, I've got my men looking around all the Alleys and backstreets where children have been found and could be left, for now, that's about all we can do until something shows up that can point us in the right direction of this person I'll keep you updated on what comes up," Maes says while watching Ed calm Rowena down a little.
"Until then we should assume that this person is intentionally harming these kids and I'll keep my men on high guard to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. I want them found as soon as possible but until then all we can do is make sure people are safe," mustang mutters rather darkly.
"If it's alright with you colonel, I want to help, I want to know why they are doing it," Edward mutters slowly while looking at Mustang for approval.
"No, you look after Rowena, she needs you with her. Alphonse can come to help us if you would like to," Maes quickly puts forth.
"Also I don't think we need you losing your cool when we find them, it might be difficult keeping you calm when the time comes," he chuckles
Ed opens his mouth to protest then shrugs.
"They would have it coming, in all fairness," he says. At this moment Rowena starts to cry again and Ed immediately reaches for the bottle in Al's arms to feed her.
"I'll have Gracia drop some of her cooking off for you, maybe give you a little break so you can sleep," Hughes smiles picking up the phone on his desk.
"Thanks," Ed sighs as his tense demeanour relaxes "Mustang is horrible at watching her, and it's not fair on Al if I make him do it all the time," Ed claims.
"I don't mind watching her, brother," Al giggles while Roy glares at the young blonde alchemist muttering under his breath
"I'm not that bad," the older alchemist pouts Ed glances at him with an eyebrow raised.
"No," he says with a shrug before turning to leave. He looks over his shoulder and grins, "your worse," he giggles before hurrying off laughing. Rowena giggling at the blonds antics as he runs past confused officers of many ranks while making his way out of the investigations building attempting to get to the car before Roy can really realize and process what he had jokingly said.
Ed's cheeks flushed red as he ran, he came to a rather sudden stop as his eyes widened slightly. There was an odd feeling in his stomach. One he had experienced once in his childhood but could never give a name to. He ignored the odd looks that people gave him. They were essentially invisible to him now anyway as his mind whirled. Biting his lip slightly he looked back over his shoulder.
Why had teasing Mustang had such a different effect on him now? He never usually felt this way towards the man. But for some reason, today, teasing him like this. It left butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
(sorry this chapter is a little shorter than the others I just felt like that was a good place to stop)
