chapter fifteen. a new clue.

Hughes grinned. This could be a big lead, a huge lead in the case.
"He Sheska, how would you like to visit an orphanage," he says standing and throwing a coat on.
"What?" The young assistant replies utterly bamboozled.
"I have a lead, I have a feeling it's a big one and I need the Sunnydale orphanage to help confirm it for me." Hughes explains walking out the door.
"You can stay hear if you want but if you want to get some fresh air then your welcome to join me, it's not that far of a walk," he adds.
Sheska contemplates it for a second before returning to her paperwork, 'I'm sure he will be fine without my help, I'd just get in the way,' she thinks to herself.

---

Walking into the orphanage Maes frowns at the state of the building. Run down, the yard was overgrown and looked a complete mess. Knocking on the door he could hear the sound of many people hurrying about insinside. A young woman opens the door with a bright smile.
"Hello and welcome to Sunnydale orphanage are you hear to adopt a child?" She greets brightly.
"No sorry,  I'm just heard to inquire about some of the previous children, all from about the age of four weeks to a year, I'm investigateting a possible abandonment case and we suspect that whoever did this might be responsible for the abandonment and death of these kids," Maes divulges.
"Oh why that's horrible, do come in I'll get our head nanny, Lucinda is in charge of all the paperwork for the children, she should be able to help you answer these questions," the woman says with a polite smile.
"Thank you miss," Hughes says stepping into the building which he now saw looked similarly on the inside as it did our side, only in here there were many children of various ages and ethnicity running around playing and a few of the older ones helping clean up and look after there younger ones.

"Good morning, sir, please come this way," an older women asks politely leading him to an office.
"Thank you, I just want to ask you if you know who adopted these children," Maes asks as he takes a seat handing her the file with all of the current assumed victims in it.
"I'm sure I can help with that," the woman who Hughes guessed must be Mrs Lucinda says.
She open the file onto her desk and scanned over them.
"Hmm, odd," she murmurs.
"Whats that?" Hughes asks sitting forward.
"None of these children were ever adopted, not legally at least, they are all ones which I admit have gone missing over the years," she says Looking up.
"But no reports were ever filed?" Maes asks raising an eyebrow.
"No, an I know that this will sound horrible, I hate that it has happened so much, but the truth of the matter is that I can not afford to pay for any more employees then what I already have and two of the three are hear as volunteers, that means that by the time we notice something like this has happened we have to either assume it was someone adopting them and not going through proper procedures or that they have been kidnapped, it's usually to late to do anything about it without risking the place being shut down, and these kids have no where else to go," Lucinda explains with a sorrowful sigh.
"They are all suspected to be victims of a series of purposeful abandonments, we have recently had someone save one more and they are looking after her while we work this case, could you help us identify the child?" Hughes asks holding up a photo he got off Roy of Ed and Rowena sleeping on a couch.
"Oh my... but that's?  Oh dear see I would not have even realized if you had not bought this to my attention,"Lucinda murmurs leaning closer to get a better look at the image.
"You know her?" Hughes asks hopeful.
"Yes, she was bought in three weeks ago by a young woman who feared she could not care for the child, she was unofficially named Sophie by one of my workers, Ellison cockney, she is usually in charge of caring for the young children," Lucinda mentions. "Is she ok? I would be welcome to have her returned if she is in need of care," she adds.
"No, no its quite alright, a kid I know has taken her in, he has done a great job looking after her and I think has grown to be rather attached to her, if you would like I'll happily have them come in and sign some adoption forms so it is official that he is Rowena's legal guardian," Maes smiles.
"That sounds lovely, I am glad she is safe, I will be sure to start implementing some better safety standards to prevent raises happening anymore, have a good day." Lucinda says standing and rummaging for paperwork to presumably tighten the security.
"You too ma'am." Maes replies taking the file and leaving the office.
The same woman who had opened the door and let him in greets him on his way out.
"So long sir, have a wonderful day."
"Yeah, you too." Hughes mumbles as he leaves his mind racing with different thoughts and possibilities as to what is going on.
