chapter eight, what's in a name.
It's been a week since Hughes started the search for the parents of the baby, just over seven days since Ed had found her in that alley. They had been giving them the benefit of the doubt about it being purposeful abandonment but Ed's hopes had been steadily dropping on them finding the parents anytime soon.
He still had not given the child a name just in case a new lead did come up. but now sprawled over mustangs sofa with the baby sleeping on his stomach...
"Did you sleep much tonight Ed?" Mustang yawns walking into the living room with his arms stretched above him.
"Not really," Ed says.
"He refused to move from that position so that she wouldn't wake," Alphonse points out from where he sat in the corner just out of Ed's minimal point of vision.
"She looks so cute and peaceful, I couldn't disrupt that," he murmurs running his flesh hand through her hair.
"Why didn't you just sleep their then?" Mustang asks with a frown.
"I think I want to call her Rowena," Ed responds ignoring Mustangs question.
"Rowena?" Mustang mumbles as though testing how it rolled off the tongue.
"Hmm, So you've finally decided to give her a name," he smiles.
"I like it, it suits her," Alphonse says.
"Its been a week, and Maes is no closer to finding her maternal parents then we are to finding a stone, All leads turn up nothing and it's becoming transparently clear that they don't seem to want to be found, its like they don't even exist," Edward explains while finally carefully lifting her off him and cradling her close while swinging his legs off and standing up.
Rowena stirring slightly at the movement but not waking up.
"I need a coffee or something," Ed yawns shuffling to the kitchen.
"Ok well I have to go soon are you two staying here today or are you going to come to do more 'boring paperwork' Ed," Mustang asks with a smirk, using air quotes when mentioning paperwork.
"I'll stay here thanks," Ed scoffs not falling for the temptation of gracias home cooked lunch again, it had worked for the past three days but he was finally learning that as good as the food is doing paperwork was not worth it. Especially since Mustang insisted on having Ed sit at the same spot at the end of his desk rather than just cleaning up one of the spare ones.
"Al, do you want to go get the research you've been doing, I'll go over it with you," Ed says over his shoulder as he walks down the hall to the kitchen.
With Rowena cradled in one arm Ed Pulls out a red ceramic mug and a thermos placing them on the bench he fills the kettle and sets it on the stove top to boil. With little to no thought, he puts one spoonful of coffee into the mug and two into the thermos then two sugars into the mug and half of one into the thermos. He gets the milk out of the fridge and pours a little into the thermos then puts it away.
As the kettle starts to whistle mustang walks in to grab his wallet which had been left on the dining table. Ed carefully tops the thermos off with hot water and fills the mug, stirring and carefully putting the lid on her hands it to Mustang without a word.
"Thanks, Ed" Roy says while walking to the front door.
Ed just nods, picks his own coffee up and walks back to the living room.
"Alright, what ya got," he yawns sitting back down on the couch sipping the coffee while rocking Rowena.
"When was the last time you called winery?" Alphonse asks picking up his research notes.
Coughing slightly on his drink Ed's eyes widen.
"Ok first off don't shock or surprise me while I'm holding Rowena and a hot drink, secondly, I am not calling her.... she'll just yell at me about taking care of myself, ask us to take her shopping again or complain about something," Ed mutters putting the cup down on a coaster on the side table.
"I think she would like Rowena," Al laughs.
"Let's just focus on the research. We might not be able to go out and search for a physical stone but we can still do through research investigations," Edward pouts.
"Ok brother," he giggles.
-----
After a long day, going over all the research Al had been doing and then further research with some of the books that Alphonse had gotten out of the library, Ed was once again sprawled over the couch holding Rowena close while humming a soft tune to her. Alphonse sat on the rug in the middle of the room silently listening to the tune of the lullaby.
"Did mum sing that for us when we were kids?" He asked. Ed just kept humming with no reply
The whole day Rowena had Been restless, and he was almost at the stage of passing out from exhaustion.
"Hmm, no, that ba... Hohenheim taught it to me... before he left us," Ed whispers with eyes closed and a frown tugging at his lips
"I use to sing it to you after he left but once I realized he wasn't coming back I stopped. It was such a beautiful song from the Xerxes culture, he always refused to say how he learnt it though," he explains "I couldn't remember the actual words now if my life depended on it, I forgot about it over time but the tune is wonderful so it seemed like a good way to calm Rowena down a little until Mustang gets home." Ed sighs before picking up where he left off with the lullaby.
"Its beautiful Ed," Mustang says from the door frame, leaning against the wooden frame his military coat off but the rest of his uniform still on.
"I didn't know your father was descendent from Xerxes," he adds walking to the couch and falling down onto it gracelessly next to Edward.
"I never use to think it was such a big deal, but now that I think about it I guess it is sort of strange. To think that Hohenheim was the last decent from their race, they were all wiped out overnight weren't they," Ed mutters sitting up.
"No one really knows what happened to them it was all way before Amestris was even a country, speculations and conspiracies I've heard link it to having something to do with all of them being wiped out at once, a countrywide epidemic of sorts that lead to each and every one of them dying at the same Time," Mustang says
"You seem to know a decent amount about it?" Alphonse points out.
"I studied it in my spare time while at the military academy, stumbled upon a history book about it and researched from there," Mustang shrugs.
"How's Rowena doing?" He asks glancing at the baby.
"She's calmer now but still a little restless, your going to have to watch her tonight while I get some sleep," Ed says handing the baby to Mustang. The young alchemists shuffle out of the room with An aura of delusion brought on by his sleep depravity.
"Good night Alphonse, night Roy," he yawns.
