seven: mother-in-law

seven: mother-in-law

"Key, slow down before you hurt yourself." Niall calls after his son, shaking his head with a soft smile on his face as Kian runs right up to Anne's front door. Niall trudges a little further behind, in no rush to pick up the twins from their grandmother's. He already knew it was going to be a battle to get them out of the house, if it was one thing the boys loved more than footie it was their grandmother. Niall was grateful for that though, grateful that Anne loved them enough that they didn't seem to mind that they only had one grandma. Anne was the one to open the front door, a bright smile on her face as she scoops Kian up into a hug. Kian lets out a bunch of giggles as Anne peppers his cheeks with kisses, the six year old pushing away but enjoying it all the same.

"Where's Harry?" Anne asks once she catches sight of her son-in-law, letting go of Kian who runs into the house to find his brothers.

"He's at home, felt a bit under the weather this morning so I told him I'd get Kian out of the house and pick up the twins. Were they good?" Niall asks, walking up the stairs on Anne's porch, giving his mother-in-law a hug once he reaches her.

"They're always good for me, I'm their favorite." Anne says, once again grinning as they walk into the house. Niall can't even bring himself to argue with her, nodding his head in agreement as they head to the kitchen for a moment. Niall could hear the boys playing in the living room, Kian already talking about his birthday party but his brothers didn't seem to be all that invested in the conversation. They were still fairly young, their attention span consisting of toy cars and dinosaurs but that didn't stop Kian from telling his brothers everything. Niall used to worry that Kian wouldn't want siblings, especially when they found out they were having twins instead of just one baby... but Kian had taken on the role of big brother with such ease that Niall had a hard time picturing Kian as an only child now. Kian loved his brothers, even if they didn't exactly see eye to eye. It was something Niall wished he could've had growing up, but Niall was an only child and in a way he was grateful for that... His childhood was fucked up enough, he would've hated to see a sibling going through what he went through.

"Are you staying for lunch?" Anne asks, sitting down at the table before Niall answers her. He sits down in a seat that gives him a view of the boys playing, Sawyer making car noises while Grayson shrieks. Kian was still talking about Spider-Man, acting like he's shooting webs as he does so.

"Probably not, Key and I had a late breakfast and I don't want to leave Harry home alone for too long. You know how he gets when he's sick, wants nothing more than cuddles. Plus, I think he missed the twins last night." Niall says, chuckling softly with Anne who nods.

"Well I suppose he'll be glad to see them then. Them on the other hand... You might be looking at quite the fight. Sawyer was pretty upset when I packed their bags this morning, started unpacking his stuff while I packed Gray's." Anne says, Niall shaking his head at his son's antics but he honestly wasn't even surprised.

"They love spending time at Grammy's... I swear every time we get in the car, they're begging us to take them here. I think you're bribing them with sweets." Niall says, Anne shrugging her shoulders which earns another laugh from her son-in-law.

"A woman's gotta do what she's gotta do to get some company around here. I live in this big house all on my own, I need the laughter of my grandsons to make it seem less empty." Anne admits, Niall finding himself knowing the feeling all too well. It was exactly how Harry and he felt when the boys were spending the weekend at Anne's, their house uncomfortably quiet without the constant giggles of three boys.

"You know you're welcome to come over and stay with us, we've got the guest room all set up for you." Niall says, jumping when there was a rather loud yell from one of the boys. It didn't seem like any of them were in distress though, so he goes back to his conversation.

"Kian and Harry are done with school now, so H will probably need help with the boys while I'm at work if you want to come stay for a little while?" Niall offers, looking at Anne who looks as if she's considering it. Niall hoped that she would, knowing full well that Harry's energy level would be dropping when he finally got pregnant. They were going to need all the help they could get, even if Harry was convinced he could do it all himself. Niall admired his husband for that, but Niall was more realistic about it. Harry was a great father to their boys, he knew how to take care of them... but sometimes even the best of parents get tired and need help.

"Maybe. It would be nice... but I don't want to be a burden on you guys or get in the way of anything..."

"If that were the case, Anne, I wouldn't have offered." Niall says, smiling at Anne who rolls her eyes at how Niall called her by her first name.

"Niall, you've been married to my son for nearly eleven years, I think you can call me Mum."
