Homemade Crayons
By: CraftyLady1
Have you wondered what to do with all those broken crayons? Tired of buying crayons all the time. Then it is time to make crayons from crayons.
I have done this many times and it does not take a lot of time. You can have the children help you and make it fun.
The supplies you will need:
Broken Crayons
Sharp knife
Cooking Spray
cup cake tin or molds in the shape of kids choice
Essential Oils (optional)
Oven
Cutting board
Oven mitts
Timer
Freezer
Towel
Direction Pre heat the oven at 350 degrees F.
While the oven is preheating have the children come and sit at the kitchen table. Bring the broken crayons to the kitchen table and have the children take the paper off all the crayons. Then have them throw all of the papers into the trash.
Once all the paper is off the crayons have the children sort the crayons by color.
When they are done you can then have the children bring you the crayons by color (example. Please bring me all the blue crayons). Then place the crayons on the cutting board and you pick up the knife and carefully cut the crayons into pea size pieces. Keeping the crayon pieces into like color piles. Then you can place the molds or muffin tins on the table.
Then spray the molds or muffin tins with the cooking spray. Now have the children place the crayons into the molds or muffin tins. This is where your children can get creative. They can keep the colors separate, or they can mix the colors to make their own unique color crayons.
Once all the crayons have been cut and placed into the muffin tins or molds, grab your oven mitts and put them on. Then open the oven door. It is time to place the muffin tins or molds into the oven. Then close the oven door.
Cook for 15 minutes or until the crayons are fully melted.
Once the crayons are fully melted, place your oven mitts back on. It is time to take out the muffin tins or molds.
Optional. Now before placing the molds or muffin tins into the freezer you can add the Cederwood and Lavender Essential oils or scents of your choosing to the molds or muffin tins, for extra nice smelling crayons.
Now place the muffin tins or molds into the freezer for them to cool completely. This should take another 15-20 minutes.
When the crayons are fully cooled you can take them out of the freezer.
Now place towels on your table for the crayons to go on to. After that is done, you are going to take the muffin tins or molds over to the table.
You are going to flip the mold or muffin tin over and the new crayons should slip out onto the towel, if not tap the molds or muffin tins to help them come out.
Now time for the children to have fun and get creative with their new crayons.
While you pop the muffin tins or molds, knife and cutting board into the dish washer to get clean.
