3. Kokedama: Build a hanging garden for your room!
No more space for flower pots on the windowsill? Never mind With a self-made moss ball - the so-called Kokedama - you can conjure up a mini hanging garden in every room
For a Kokedama you need:
- potting soil
- sand
- two 30x30 cm pieces of burlap
- a small fern or flower of your choice
- fresh moss
- loads of twine
This is how the Kokedama is made:
1. Mix two handfuls of earth and two handfuls of sand in a bucket.
2. Cut two pieces of twine, each 1 meter long, and place them crosswise on the table.
3. Place the piece of burlap on the spot where the twine crosses and pile the earth-sand mixture in the middle of the burlap.
4. Carefully take the plant out of its pot and leave some soil on the roots. Place the plant in the middle of the soil-sand mixture.
5. Carefully lift the corners of the sackcloth so that it encloses the soil like a bag and the plant peeks out from above. Now tie the sackcloth into a ball with the string.
6. Put the second burlap over it for stabilization and tie the ball off at the top.
7. Place the moss on the ball and secure it with more string.
8. Tie up the moss ball tightly with a lot of twine.
9. Now it's time to water: Place your moss ball in a bowl of water for 30 minutes.
10. Let the moss ball drain (preferably in the bathtub or the shower) and hang it up. Your Kokedama is ready!
