A Pirate Day

Our little ones are getting restless, school at home is not so fun and not seeing their friends is setting their mood off.
How about some fun activities to do together?
School at home can be fun when we mix it with games and craft.
So. Today, we propose to go on an adventure. A pirate treasure hunt!
Ahoy matey! Let's get set...
To start our adventure, our little pirates need some props:
· A costume;
· A treasure map;
· A treasure chest.
The Costume
Many resources are available online to help find an easy way to create those essential parts of the pirate costume.
The eye patch shall be no issue, a scrap of black cloth, a piece of black felt or some cardboard coloured in black will do the trick.
The jacket is optional. Some felt or an old black tee-shirt to recycle, cut in the front, remove the sleeves and voila!
On the head, you can just play with a black bandana or foulard, another old tee-shirt to recycle would make a good start for our little pirate head.
Though, if you really want a pirate hat, we found an easy tutorial the children can follow on Alex and Alexa blog.
What do you need? Things you will find in the house or in your kid's pencil box: cardboard, scissors (or cutting knife), ruler, pencil, glue, paint/crayons, thread (elastic is a must, but regular will work the same)
Follow the tutorial and you will have a happy little pirate!
What makes really a pirate costume, besides the eye patch and the hat, Is the sword.
There are many different ways to make swords, including the origami or the rolled newspaper. You will find HERE a simple tutorial to make those.
There is another interesting and easy way to make a sword. Just take a look at this video.

With a hat, an eye patch and a sword, our little pirates are now ready to wreak havoc... in the house!!
The Treasure Map
What would be a pirate without a treasure map?
For this fun activity, you can take many paths.
Let your little ones making one from their imagination, or use a template.
Here are some resources you can download and/or print:
· A treasure map colouring page from supercoloring.com
· 6+ treasure map templates to download from template.net
· A quick google search will give you also access to many templates for your children to pick from..
But, if you want to fine-tune the map, make it a bit more 'authentic, we propose two easy 'how-to' to follow:
· Make a vintage map with shoe polish
The Treasure Chest
A treasure map is all fun to make, but it's even better when there is a treasure chest to find under the X.
There are many ways to go with making treasure chests. The easiest is to use any available cardboard you can find in the house. Shoeboxes make it great. Or you can just cut all you need in different pieces of cardboard...
Following the treasure map making, we found some examples of tutorial for easy treasure chest making:
The common point is the use of carton base material. Any carton box is good. If it is thin cardboard—like in a shoebox, it is always possible to reinforce it by doubling the side with another layer of carton.
In the examples above and below, we use carton and wood glue to fix them. The carton is easy to round to set the form for the cover top. Paper tape is also a good help to make all stick together.
A layer of paper tape will give a wood vein-like finishing touch when painting the chest.
Painting or covering with paper, adding decoration, anything is possible.
But the most important in the treasure chest is the treasure you put inside!
Other Resources
Having fun making Pirate costumes, treasure maps and treasure chests is all good. And if our little pirates are happy...
