Chapter 8

"Okay people," Ms. O declared after the door shut on the chalkboard room. "Let's come up with a plan. Any ideas?"

Oona raised her hand. "You and Oscar still hang out sometimes, right? And the same with Otto and Olive? Maybe you could invite them to come to the same place with you, and we could help them sorta...bump into each other. And we can have code names! I'll be Catlyn with a C, and Olympia can be Katlyn with a K, and Ms. O can be Caitlyn with a C and an i, and Otis can be Kaitlyn with a K and an i, and Otto can be Kaitlin with a K and two i's!"

"That's a great idea! I mean, not the name thing," Ms. O scrunched up her nose, "but the rest of it is good."

"Sounds good to me, where should we take them?" Otto asked.

"A basketball game?" Olympia offered.

"I don't think so, it should be something that they both like," Oona pointed out.

"And something we all like so that it's not suspicious," Otto added.

"Right," Oona agreed. "How about the museum?"

"Better, but we need more of a crowd so you three can blend in and Otto and I can disappear when we need to," Ms. O said.

"Maybe a movie? There are crowds there," Olympia suggested.

"Too quiet, and it would be really hard to get them together," Otto said. "Ice skating?"

Ms. O shook her head. "There are only so many places you can hide with skates on."

Olympia jumped from her seat. "A CARNIVAL!"

Otto smiled. "Yeah, a carnival! That's perfect!"

"Except there won't be any more of those until next spring," Ms. O sighed.

Olympia rested her chin on her fists dejectedly.

Otis spoke up. "How about 50s night at Club 24 tomorrow?"

Olympia slowly lifted her head. "What did you say?"

"50s night. Everyone dresses up in 50s clothes, they play 50s music? There's always quite a few people, it's loud enough that they could talk without being conspicuous but quiet enough that we can all hear each other with our earpieces, plus Otto and Ms. O both like dancing. Do Olive and Oscar like to dance?"

"Oscar does, training videos #9 and #531," Oona confirmed.

"So does Olive," Olympia added. "'The Force of Gravity' music video. But how in the world are we going to get costumes by tomorrow night?"

Oona grinned. "You have no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to say that."

* * * * *

"I present to you, the wardrobe room!"

Olympia, in a rare turn of events, was speechless as she walked down the massive corridor of clothes. "What? How? Oona, did you...did you make all of this?"

"Yessiree! Outfits from every time period custom made specifically for every agent," she replied, gesturing at a rack. "This is Olympia's, and Otis, yours is right here, next to hers. Outfits are sorted by agent, time period, region of the solar system and color."

Otis raised an eyebrow. "Solar system? Are you suggesting that there's life on other planets?"

"Well, I'm not sure, of course, but I have a hunch about Uranus. Aaaaaanyways, the outfits are all yours."

Olympia decided on a pink poodle skirt with a white shirt while Otis experimented with various suits, fedoras, and fake glasses.

"But wait, what about Olive, Oscar, and me? We don't have a wardrobe room at our precinct, and Oscar doesn't have a precinct at all," Otto pointed out.

Oona thought for a moment. "Sewing is part of our training to become head scientists. Oscar will make his own, I'm sure, and I can make outfits for you two. Unless, of course, you think it would be less suspicious to ask O'Quinncy—"

"No no!" Otto exclaimed, waving his hands emphatically. "I'm sure that asking you would be perfectly un-suspicious."

Ms. O stepped forward. "Okay, we've got a location and outfits. Here's the plan. Otto and I will ask Olive and Oscar to come to the dance. Olympia and Otis, you'll trail Olive, and Oona, you've got Oscar. Olympia and Oona will be in charge of watching their body language and helping Otto and me do things to get them together. Otis, you're backup. Once Oscar and Olive are close enough, Otto and I will disappear and watch from a safe distance to make sure everything goes smoothly. Any questions?"

Everyone shook their heads.

"In that case, Odd Squad on three!"

The agents put their hands on top of each other. "One, two, three, ODD SQUAD!"

"Now what are you waiting for? Get back to work!"

Olympia and Otis nodded and took their outfits.

Suddenly, Oona realized something. "Oh, Ms. O, we haven't gotten you an outfit yet! Your section is over h—"

"That won't be necessary, Oona," Ms. O cut her off, her eyes a bit misty. "I think I've got the perfect thing..."

E/N So those of you who follow Anna Cathcart on Instagram, you may know that in Fall 2016 she posted a picture of her Halloween costume—which was a pink poodle skirt 50s outfit. (I put it in the picture header above, too!) Yes, this is exactly the same outfit Agent0002 described above when Olympia picks hers off the clothing rack. Go figure!
