Chapter 2: You Should Smile More
Tsu was generally a happy person, she didn't have much reason not to be happy in her day to day life. Despite being happy, Tsuyu didn't show her happiness through endless smiles. Mina and Ochako were the types to smile all day, their bubbly personalities ensured there was always a grin slapped onto their faces, but Tsu just wasn't the type. However, some people just couldn't seem to grasp that concept.
Tsu had been minding her own business, simply doing her homework in the lounge area, when the door to the dorm building had burst open and a gaggle of boys had bounced into the room, flooding the large space with their voices. Tsuyu knew that completing homework in the lounge meant that she ran the risk of being distracted, but she took that chance just so that she could be around her classmates, they were like family to her and the noise they made was reminiscent of the noise her siblings made when she was still able to live at home. Being around her classmates cured her homesickness, if only slightly.
"That was very enjoyable." Todoroki deadpanned monotonously.
"Yeah, it was dude! Pranking 2B will always an awesome way to spend our time. We should just be thankful that Iida wasn't around, I don't think he would have found it as fun." Kaminari chuckled, throwing his arm around Todoroki's shoulder, a difficult task given Todoroki was significantly taller than the buttercup haired boy.
"Mhm. Xe only partakes in felonies." Todoroki's voice lilted with what Tsu had come to recognise as their rare attempt at humour, the problem with Todoroki's humour is that their jokes are so obscure that nobody understood them but a select few.
"Huh?" Sato asked, his laughter interrupted momentarily by his pure confusion.
"Nothing! It's just an inside joke that me, Iida and Shoto have." Midoriya chuckled nervously, shooting a look of warning at Todoroki, "Anyway, what should we do now? Has everyone completed their homework?"
"Nah. But Bakubro promised that he would do a homework session with us tomorrow so we're all set!" Sero assured.
"O-oh ok. Then, what should we do?" Midoriya asked once again.
"Well..." Kaminari started, a mischievous grin working its way onto his face, "I was saving up my allowance and I finally got that new game 'Killer Robot-Bear'! Who wants to play?"
Kaminari's reveal was met with several exclamations from the other boys, all of them looked as though they were enamoured with the idea of playing the oddly named game, Tus had heard Mina and Kyoka lamenting over the fact that they couldn't buy the game yet, so Tsu assumed that despite the peculiar name, the game as very anticipated. Whilst Tsu was sure that the game was nothing but intriguing, she didn't particularly want to watch as her classmates tried and failed over and over again, eventually rage quitting before trying again the next day.
Seeing as the lounge area was going to get noisier than Tsuyu was comfortable with, she decided to pack up her things up and go to a more private area, she pondered whether she should visit Ochako's room as she did so.
Tsu was just leaving her table when Sero bounced towards the kitchen, passing Tsuyu as he did so.
"Ah, Tsu, I didn't see you there! How long have you been here?" Sero asked kindly.
"Oh, I've been here for an hour or two. Don't worry, I won't tell Iida about your prank." Tsuyu assured her classmate.
One of the downsides to being one of the smallest class members was that Tsuyu had to look up at all of her classmates when addressing them. Tsu had few qualms about her physical appearance, and her height didn't usually bother her, but it hurt her neck to be looking up so frequently.
"Thanks, Tsu. Hey, are you ok? You look a bit upset, or pissed off." Sero inquired.
"Yes, I'm fine."
"OK. Good. You should smile more. It'll make your emotions more clear." And with that Sero patted Tsu on the shoulder and moved past her and into the kitchen, leaving her perplexed.
Tsuyu wasn't sure what to take from Sero's words. She was sure that there was no malicious intent behind Sero's words, even so, it wasn't his place to tell her to smile more. Tsu had heard those exact words several times throughout her life, sometimes the person saying them had ill intent, sometimes they were just making an idle comment and meant nothing by it.
Knowing that Sero most likely meant no harm by his words, Tsu simply resumed her walk towards the lift so that she could go to Ochako's room. Even though Tsu had deduced that Sero meant no harm, she was still annoyed.
"Oh, hey Tsuyu!" Ochako greeted jovially.
Tsu was reminded of Sero's words briefly at the sight of Ochako's beaming grin, a flicker of jealousy and possibly anger ignited in Tsu's chest but she immediately snuffed it out. There was no reason for Tsu to feel such negative emotions towards her dear friend, she couldn't let the words of others affect her relationship with her friends. Just because Ochako was a naturally bubbly person who smiled easily, it didn't mean that Tsu had a reason to envy her on those grounds.
"Hi, Ochako. Is it ok if I do homework in your room, the boys are being too loud in the lounge and I can't concentrate when it's silent?" Tsu aked.
"Of course, come in. Toru and Yaomomo are in here with me, I hope you don't mind." Ochako smiled sweetly as she closed the door.
Just as Ochako had said, Momo and Toru were sat around the table in Ochako's room, both of them laughing at something somebody had said. Upon seeing Tsuyu enter the room, their laughter ceased ever so slightly, though broad smiles still remained on their faces.
"Tsu. Hi, what are you doing here?" Momo asked.
"I'm just going to do my homework in here, don't worry about keeping quiet, I prefer to have background noise." Tsuyu explained as ae took a seat on Ochakko's bed, laying her homework and revision resources out in front of her.
"Oh, ok. But tell us if we're getting too loud, ok?" Momo had always been thoughtful when it came to others, a quality that Tsu appreciated in people.
"Of course, but you shouldn't concern yourself too much, I'm used to there being a lot of noise whilst I'm working," Tsu assured her friend.
Seemingly placated, Momo nodded and turned back to engage in the conversation with Toru and Ochako. Their voices were a low hum in the background as Tsuyu focused solely on the history essay in front of her.
Roughly 45 minutes later, Tsu finished her history essay and put her pen down, rubbing her eyes to rid herself of the floating letters that seemed to be circling around her. The girls by the table were still happily talking, having gotten louder as the minutes had passed, Tsu hadn't minded. Seeing as all of her work was done, Tsu elected to slip onto the floor with her friends and engage in the conversation they were having.
"No, I understand that, but wouldn't it be cooler if you could teleport, that's a really cool quirk. Plus, people would be able to see you!" Toru sounded extremely excited, and if the way her sleeves were flailing about was any sort of indication, she was waving her hands around to gesticulate.
"Yes. I guess that would be cool. Teleportation is a rather rare quirk," Momo sighed, "But think about this, you can transform into whatever person or creature you read about as long as you know the lore behind them! You could transform into a literal god!"
"Yeah, but you'd have to do a lot of research for that. And you already do a fair bit of research for your quirk, for somebody who doesn't like to read, that wouldn't be an ideal quirk. Transforming matter into whatever you want, however, is really useful and if you don't have to understand the molecular composition, even better!" Ochako exclaimed happily. Tsu couldn't help the fluttering of butterflies in her stomach when she beheld Ochako's rosy cheeks and her wide smile.
"What do you think, Tsu, if you could have any other quirk, what would you have?" Ochako asked, turning to address the new addition to their group.
"I'm not sure? I really love my quirk, but there are a lot of really interesting quirk," Tsuyu mused to herself, "I guess I would have something along the lines of... well Tokoyami's quirk is pretty cool. Having a sentient quirk means that you'd never be alone, plus it's powerful."
The other girls hummed and nodded in agreement. "That makes sense. Tokoyami's quirk is really cool. There are a bunch of cool quirks in our class and class 2B." Toru hummed. She was leaning against the table with her head resting against her hands, maybe wistfully staring off into the distance. Tsu couldn't be 100% sure, she couldn't actually see her friend.
"Talking about class 2B, did you know that Tokage and Kendo are together? I thought Kendo had a crush on Tetsutetsu, but obviously not. I've seen Tokage and Kendo outside of school, I think they were on a date so I didn't want to interrupt." Ochako pipes up.
"Oh, yeah, Mina told me about that. She and Tsunotori were speaking and Tsunotori told her. Her Japanese has gotten a lot better since the start of the first year, but Mina wasn't sure if that was what she meant. But that puts that to rest! Oh, I can't believe that the first couple in the year is from class 2B. I was sure that you and Midoriya would be the first couple. Though, you two do dance around each other a lot." Toru giggled. She'd turned to Ochako, and she seemed to be teasing her, the rings on her fingers wiggled in a kidding gesture.
"Stop it," Ochako chuckled in embarrassment, "I don't like Deku like that anymore. Or, at least, not as much as I did. My crush on him is sort of disappearing. I don't think he wants a relationship at the moment anyway."
"Crushes come and go. I think it was bound to happen at some point," Momo reassured.
"I know. I'm not upset, really. It doesn't matter anyway. If I end up in a relationship, that's good for me, but I'm here to become the best hero I can be so that I can help my parents! No boy is going to distract me from my goal!" Ochako pumped a fist into the air, her determination was truly admirable.
"Good for you, Ochako! I bet your parents are super proud of everything you've already done!" Toru exclaimed joyfully. "I think I might ask Ojiro on a date, I'm devoted to becoming a hero, but it's getting a bit hard to concentrate when my mind is full of ideas on how to ask him out! What do you think I should do?"
"I think you should just go up to him and ask." Tsu stated bluntly, "But if you want to make it special, maybe do an activity with him such as baking or visiting the flower garden, it's beautiful at this time of the year."
"OMG! You're right, Tsu! I'll do it tonight! I'm going to ask Ojiro out!" Toru sounded so excited, Tsu felt her heart swell with friendly affection for the invisible girl.
"Wow, you plucked up the courage to do that fast," Ochako chuckled.
"I'm happy that you've made this decision, Toru, I hope he agrees to go on a date with you." Momo's smile was reassuring.
"Do you think they understand how harmful their words can be?" Ochako asked idly, she was sprawled out on her floor tracing shapes in the air.
"Hmm?" Momo asked, confusion scrunching up her brow.
"The guys. When they say all this shit like you should smile more and you should eat less or more it's kind of annoying, I think Kyoka had every right to snap at Mineta the other night, and Deku as well, but I don't think most of her anger was directed at him." Ochako sighed.
"Yes, it's quite annoying. Sero told me I should smile more earlier, I'm sure he didn't mean any harm by it, but it's getting rather repetitive. Kirishima has said it, Tetsutetsu has said it, Sato has said it, Mineta has said it, my dad has said it. But, then again, so have a few girls. My mum, sister, one of my friends from middle school, it's not exclusively a male thing." Tsu ribbited, sighing heavily as she did so.
"Yeah. But men say it more. I just feel like I need to do everything they tell me to otherwise they'll see me as a lesser person or...or something along those lines." Momo hummed. Toru made a noise of agreement.
"Yeah. But what can we do? I've tried explaining it before, and even the sweetest guys like Kirishima don't quite grasp it completely. They just keep saying the same things without thought." Toru grumbled.
The four girls remained in silence for a little while, all of them consumed in their thoughts of various experiences and how they got under their skin. They may have remained there for a good while longer had the dinner bell not echoed through the dorms, summoning everyone to the dining area so that the class could have dinner together.
Seeing as it was a Saturday night, the girls all sat together for the evening's meal. Every Saturday, the girls caught up with each other as fully as they could be by sitting with each other at dinner. Being in a class that was primarily full of boys, and going into a field of work that was primarily men and benefited them more, was stressful and spawned doubts and anger faster than bacteria could multiply. It was nice to gather together at least once a week to vent out their emotions over a delectable meal, usually compliments of Sato, Bakugo and Momo.
"So, what's new this week, girlies? We spoke a bit over breakfast on Wednesday, but who needs to share something more?" Mina crooned as she flopped into her seat beside Toru.
"Well..." Toru teased, "I'm planning on inviting Ojiro to the flower garden after dinner so that I can ask him out on a date. Hearing about Tokage and Kendo has inspired me!"
"Aww. I'm so happy for you, Toru, you have to tell us how it goes as soon as you come back!" Mina squealed around her mouthful of rice and pork. Toru's sleeves were held out in front of her, it was always hard to tell, but Tsu believed she was giving Mina a thumbs up.
"Anything else of note?" Ochako hummed.
"Well Tsu was saying about how annoying some of the things the boys say are, but we've had this conversation so many times, it's getting rather redundant." Momo sighed. She was somehow already on her second plate of food, despite dinner only having started ten minutes prior. Momo was a pro when it came to eating at lightning-fast speeds in a dignified manner that didn't result in her getting hiccups or acid reflux.
"On the upside," Kyoka hummed, "Midoriya apologised for the other night. I wasn't even really mad at him, it was mainly Mineta. I mean, I appreciate it, and he said that he'd meant no harm, but I already knew that. He didn't really need to apologise, but I'd appreciate an apology from a certain somebody else, not like I'll ever get it though."
"That's good," Tsu smiled brightly, "Midoriya worries a lot about upsetting people, so I understand why he apologised."
"Yeah, Deku is sweet. The same can't be said for He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned, don't hold your breath when it comes to an apology from him." Ochako scowled, anger rarely clouded over her features, causing her bubbly smile to drop, but when it did she was usually either worked up or working herself up in one way or another.
"Don't worry, Ochako-chan, we'll keep complaining to the teachers and soon enough they'll have to get rid of him. He's a menace to society." Tsuyu reassured as she gently placed a placating hand on the girl's shoulder.
Ochako took a few deep breaths with closed eyes, the angry flush that had coloured her entire face soon faded, leaving behind nothing but her usual rosy cheeks and bubbly smile. "You're right, Tsu. Justice will be served one day, and when that day comes we can have a party to celebrate the end of his wicked reign."
Chuckles circulated around the table, the girls laughed and joked, but Tsu knew that it was a deep-seated fear in all of them that Mineta wouldn't be expelled or at the very least educated on why his actions were wrong. They all feared that he would make his way to the position of a hero and abuse his power to do something truly sick and frightening. In that position, who would listen to some poor civilian instead of a fully licensed hero? Everybody placed blind trust in heroes, and there was no way that some people hadn't abused that or planned to abuse that in the future.
It was decided that since they hadn't gotten the chance the previous week, the class would watch a film, hopefully without any sort of outburst this time around. As was the routine when the class decided to watch a film together, everyone piled into the lounge and took up whatever place they felt the most comfortable. Popcorn was being brought out in droves from the kitchen alongside some other snacks to accompany them. Toru and Ojiro were not present when everyone settled down, but Tsu had expected that, so she wasn't worried.
"Ok. Since we didn't get the chance to watch it last time, let's watch Homoculous, and then we can watch a Disney film. Yeah?" Mina, once again, stood at the front of the room, by the TV, and looked around at her classmates, silently asking for their opinions.
"I'm happy with this plan," Tokoyami muttered from where they were cocooned in black blankets in the corner of one of the sofas.
"Yeah! This film looks really good!" Kaminari cheered.
The rest of the class agreed steadily and the film was put on. Tsu didn't have a strong opinion either way when it came to horror films. She didn't adore them like Kyoka, Tokoyami, Bakugo and (surprisingly) Ochako did, but she certainly didn't hate them with a burning passion like Mineta, Koda, Kaminari and Toru. Tsu was merely neutral when it came to horror films.
The film was good, and the following Disney films were just as good, if not more so. By midnight, everyone was getting sleepy and they all retired to their rooms. Tsu lay in bed that night and reflected upon the day's events. Toru had come in thirty minutes into the first film and whispered to the gathered girls that Ojiro had bashfully agreed to go on a date with her. Tsu was happy for her friend, though knowing that there were two confirmed couples in her year group made Tsu's heartache with solitude. That didn't matter at the moment though, Ochako and Midoriya had the right idea, she needed to focus on becoming the best hero that she could be.
Sorry if this chapter had mistakes and isn't the best, I'm really tired whilst editing this, but I want to get it out. Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
