Chapter 13: Nothing Is Going To Change
Saturday morning sunlight streamed into Kyoka's room, stirring them from their gentle slumber. Upon opening their eyes, Kyoka felt their heart stutter in their chest as they remember what they had resolved themself to do that day. They were going to ask Momo out on a date and, hopefully, she would say yes to being their girlfriend. Just the thought of being able to call Momo their girlfriend made Kyoka's heartbeat erratic.
With more enthusiasm than they usually had, Kyoka leapt out of bed and pulled off their noise-cancelling headphones. Determination burned in their gaze as they marched over to their wardrobe and pulled out some of their best casual clothes. They couldn't look like a mess when they asked Momo out, could they? Of course, Kyoka wasn't the type of person to dress up a lot either, they scarcely had any formal clothes aside from the deep indigo, bordering on black, suit that they'd had to buy for a hero event everyone was required to attend. Wearing such a suit on a simple date with Momo (provided the girl said yes to going on a date) would be overkill. So, Kyoka pulled out their best jacket and shoes that they only wore on special occasions, actually ironed their t-shirt and jeans, got dressed and stepped out into the corridor, determined to not let their nerves get in the way of asking Momo on a date.
Kyoka's first obstacle came in the form of Momo not being present at breakfast. Ordinarily, Momo was very punctual when it came to attending meals. She, alongside Iida, stressed that eating meals with everybody in the class would make everyone more comfortable around each other and more coordinated on the battlefield. It was extremely out of character for Momo not to be one of the very first people seated at the tables and eating her breakfast.
"Hey, have you seen Momo?" Kyoka asked, pulling Shinso to a stop beside them.
"Huh?" Shinso slurred sleepily, "No, she hasn't been down since she went to bed yesterday."
"Dude, did you stay down here all night?" Kyoka asked their classmate.
"No. I couldn't sleep. I don't know where my medication is," Shinso replied blearily, their head continuously fell forwards to rest upon Kyoka's shoulder.
"It's in the bathroom cabinet in the boy's bathroom," Midoriya supplied as he passed the two.
"Oh. Thanks, I guess I'll just use them tonight," Shinso attempted to shrug, but he was wholly unsuccessful.
"Dude, go to bed, you're gonna pass out," Kyoka sighed, they looked around for a second before gesturing over to Kaminari. "Get over here!"
"What's up?" Kaminari beamed.
"How do you have so much energy? I bet you didn't actually go to sleep until 4 am again. That doesn't matter, take Shinso to their room. They look like they're about to pass out and I don't want to risk it." Kyoka ordered. Kaminari saluted as he took Shinso from Kyoka and started hauling them towards the lift, chuckling and telling jokes as he did so.
With a heavy sigh, Kyoka made their way into the kitchen and made themself breakfast, resigning themself to the fact that they wouldn't be able to ask Momo out over a cup of her favourite smoothie.
The next interruption that Kyokas faced was the unexpected visit from Aoyama's mother. Of course, that really shouldn't have impeded their progress, but somehow it did. They had just caught sight of Momo, the object of their affection was crossing the lounge area in what could only be described as a graceful waltz. Kyoka was just about to walk over to her and strike up a conversation which would eventually lead to them bashfully asking Momo if she wanted to go out on a date when somebody bumped into them. Despite being a hero in training, Kyoka was in no way prepared to be knocked into with such force, so they were sent careening to the ground, landing with a harsh bump.
"Oh my!" somebody squeaked in alarm.
Kyoka rubbed their arm, taking notice of the slight abrasion on it before they glanced up at the person who had knocked them over. It was clear who she was related to as soon as Kyoka set eyes on her. The bright violet eyes, the wavy golden hair, the flamboyant sense of fashion. It was clear as day that this was Aoyama's mother.
"Oh dear, I'm terribly sorry!" the woman cried out, she held out her hand for Kyoka to take. Kyoka took her hand, noting that they were just as silky as Aoyama's. They must use the same moisturiser, Aoyama had given some to Kyoka before, it worked wonders.
"It's ok. I should have been paying more attention to my surroundings," Kyoka dismissed with a gentle smile. They looked over Aoyama's mother's shoulder to see if they could catch a glimpse of Momo, but she seemed to have disappeared.
"Have you seen my daughter yet today? He was supposed to meet up with me 10 minutes ago so that we could go shopping. You know, that Midnight lady looks lovely, I'm sure she knows quite a bit about fashion. My husband, of course, thinks she's a bit scandalous. But our Yuga seems to like her so who am I to judge. She's supposed to be accompanying us and I'm not sure how long she's willing to wait." Mrs Aoyama rambled on. Kyoka was awkward when it came to interactions with those they were not familiar with, having to stand there and smile whilst Mrs Aoyama spoke, in-depth, about her shopping habits was a special kind of torture.
"Mama!" Aoyama shouted happily as he rushed into the common area. His burgundy skirt swirled around his ankles, Kyoka knew that if they were wearing that outfit they would have tripped no less than three times moving at the speed Aoyama was going.
"Yuga!" Mrs Aoyama squealed in return, rushing over to greet her child.
Finally freed from the conversation, Kyoka quickly rushed away before they could be interrogated about their favourite fashion brand (they did not have one, for they were not knowledgeable about such topics, that was more Mina, Toru and Momo's forte).
The final time that Kyoka tried to ask Momo out on a date did not go how they had expected it to.
Finally, Kyoka had set their sights on Momo and there was nothing and nobody around which could interfere with their plans to walk over to Momo, start a casual conversation, and build up to asking the younger girl out on a date. What could possibly go wrong? Despite Kyoka being sure nothing could possibly interfere with their plans, there were no outside forces that could possibly cause their plan to go to shit, it was in fact Momo who wrecked all of Kyoka's plans.
As soon as Momo caught sight of Kyoka, her entire facial expression lit up, which wasn't out of the ordinary, and she started walking towards Kyoka with purpose in her step. Whilst her behaviour was peculiar, Kyoka thought nothing of it. They were about to greet their friend, determined to initiate their plan when Momo threw an unforeseeable curveball.
"Kyoka!" Momo shouted with excitement colouring her tone, "Will you go on a date with me?"
Kyoka tripped over their feet at Momo's sudden exclamation, luckily, they managed to catch themself before they fell to the ground. Kyoka stared up at Momo with a gaping mouth and wide eyes, they had expected to be the one asking the other on a date, not the other way around. Regardless of who was asking, it didn't matter all too much to Kyoka, all they wanted was to be able to call Momo their girlfriend.
"O-of course!" Kyoka shouted, jumping forwards to wrap Momo in a hug that she returned with the same amount of love and joy.
Kyoka's plan hadn't gone as they had expected, but what did that matter when they were sat under a willow tree (seemingly the most popular on-campus location for dates) with the beauty that was Momo sat beside them.
When Momo had called out to Kyoka, asking them to go on a date with her, it had been a spur of the moment decision. Momo's original plan had been a lot more elegant and refined. She had intended to strike up a conversation, as she usually would with Kyoka, she had planned to mention Tsu and Ochako's new relationship and how she too desired to be in a relationship for a multitude of reasons, and then she would ask Kyoka out on a date, waxing poetry about every reason that Kyoka was an amazing person. That entire plan had disappeared upon seeing Kyoka, the sight of them had sparked nerves in Momo to the extent that she lost control of her mouth, she had shouted (rather loudly) the intimate question at Kyoka, doing so had killed her a little bit inside from sheer embarrassment. You can imagine that Momo was extremely relieved when Kyoka didn't reject her brutally and instead accepted her proposal to date.
Now, Momo and Kyoka were having a picnic and laughing easily. At first, the date had been slightly awkward, after all, they were spending time together for purely romantic reasons. But, after a while, the two students began to loosen up and their easy way of speaking reared its head.
"How long have you liked me?" Kyoka asked with an intrigued and cheeky gleam sparkling in their eyes.
"Oh," Momo blushed violently and turned her head away slightly, "Umm... I think it was a little after the summer camp. You were always there for me and I realised that I liked you as more than a friend, it's taken me a while to act on those feelings,"
"Ha! I win!" Kyoka grinned, "I've liked you since just after the USJ incident, maybe a week or two before the Sports Festival."
Kyoka's admission was shameless, though there wasn't much to be ashamed about. The only possible cause of shame may have been the fact that she had waited a year to tell Momo about her feelings.
"Is that so?" Momo smiled serenely, taking a sip of the mango juice she had carefully prepared just for this date.
"Yep!" Kyoka smiled, "It makes me sound kinda pathetic, but oh well. At least I have you now, right?"
Kyoka's voice turned bashful towards the end, they ducked their head and looked up at Momo through their fringe. It was this sight that took Momo's breath away. There wasn't anything particularly special about Kyoka that day. They had pulled on some of their nicer clothes and they had lined their eyes in black, making the violet of their iris even more profound, but there was nothing profound about their appearance. And yet, as the sun shone through the willow's jade curtains and struck Kyoka, Momo couldn't help but be struck by how beautiful they were. Their hair, their pale skin, their eyes that seemed to swallow up light, their fashion sense. Everything about Kyoka was enchanting to Momo, and it seemed like all of Momo's affection for them crashed over like a tidal wave in that one moment.
"Yes," Momo muttered breathlessly, "Of course, we're... We're together now."
"Perfect," Kyoka smirked, "That means I can finally do this, if you'll allow me, of course,"
Kyoka pushed onto their knees and leaned closer to Momo's face, doing so slowly so that Momo could pull back at any time she wished. But Momo didn't move backwards, she inched forward slightly to greet Kyoka in the middle, eyes enraptured on inky pools of purple.
"Are you sure?" Kyoka asked.
"Positive," Momo reassured.
Kyoka nodded and closed the distance between them once and for all. Their lips pressed against Momo's in a way that showed their inexperience, and yet Momo didn't mind. This was her first kiss as well. It was chaste, there was no need for it to develop any further, it was a simple display of their sweet, teenage love.
When the two of them pulled away, they smiled giddily at each other before falling into a tight embrace. This was what Momo wanted. Just her and Kyoka, happily content to live life in their own little bubble.
When Momo and Kyoka returned back to the dorms, they did so hand in hand. They were greeted with happy smiles and pats on the back of their classmates. Mina whined that she was now the only one not in a relationship, though everyone knew that it was just an act, but congratulated the two of them nonetheless. The only person who wasn't happy was, predictably, Mineta.
"This is pathetic," Mineta drawled upon seeing Momo and Kyoka walking into the dorms hand in hand. His eyes had been clouded over by malice and he looked absolutely disgusted.
"Shove your homophobia up your ass, Mineta, you perv!" Kyoka spat. They flipped him off as they did so, not offering him any more attention as they walked past with Momo's hand firmly in their's. Kyoka had promised themself that they wouldn't let Mineta's words affect them as they had Tsu and Ochako. They had promised that they wouldn't let him lay a finger on her girlfriend without facing severe consequences. They had promised themself that if he so much as looked at them funny, they would do their best to get him expelled. And Kyoka planned to follow through with those silent promises.
It didn't take long for Mineta to act. There was no denying that the boy was adequately smart. You had to be to get into UA, not to mention the fact that he was 9th in the class in terms of academics. It was a shame that Mineta only used his smarts for negative things. He only used his brain when it benefited him. Accosting both Momo and Kyoka behind the dorm building at sunset, when he was well aware that the rest of the class was noisily playing games in the lounge area was an example of putting his mind to work in a negative way.
Momo and Kyoka had offered to take the rubbish out that evening, promising their friends that they would be back soon so that they could join in on the class activity. It was supposed to be a quick trip. The two of them could take the six bulging bags to the bins and return within a few minutes, ordinarily, but that wasn't the case this time around.
"How the fuck do we produce so much rubbish?" Kyoka bemoaned as they huffily deposited their bags into the bin.
"I know. Only a fraction of this is food waste and wrappings, I'm not sure what we do warrant six bags," Momo chuckled gently. Momo's light laughter, however, abruptly cut off when she tried to move from the bin and found that she couldn't. She was stuck.
"Kyoka..." Momo trailed off as she looked down and her eyes were greeted with an all too familiar sight. She was stuck to the bin by a squishy purple ball. Immediately, Momo's head snapped up and she looked around frantically for the perpetrator, but he was nowhere in sight.
A pair of scissors sprung from Momo's arms and she quickly went to work with cutting the fabric of her trousers.
"It's a shame that you had to turn out like this, Yaoyorozu," the eery, lispy voice of Minoru Mineta leered from behind the bin, a place that Momo couldn't help but sagely think he belonged. "You're too pretty for this. You could have made a man very happy,"
Mineta walked closer to Momo, his eyes alight with a sick light that Momo didn't want to know the meaning of. All she wanted was to be as far away from him as possible. Being within two meters of the boy made her extremely uncomfortable.
"Fuck off you creep!" Kyoka snapped, they didn't hesitate in kicking him into the bin, seemingly disorientating him slightly, "I'm sick of the words coming out of your mouth!"
Just then, Momo finally managed to cut through the surprisingly durable fabric of her trousers. She quickly grasped Kyoka's hand and dragged her towards the dorms. She was determined to do something about this. She was going to get Mineta expelled if she could, his harassment had gone on for too long.
"I'm not sure what we can do about this," Aizawa sighed.
"What do you mean!" Kyoka huffed, "This has been going on for so long, he won't leave the rest of the girls alone. Who knows how far he'll go and what he'll get away with as a hero. If Endeavour can get away with child abuse then Mineta will certainly be able to get away with harassment or worse."
"Please, Aizawa, he might have developed a proficiency in battle and his quirk use can be ingenious at times, but surely his behaviour is unbecoming of a hero," Momo said, her voice bordered on begging. She was desperate.
"Look, girls," Aizawa sighed, once again, he leaned forwards in his chair and levelled Kyoka and Momo with his tired and yet attentive gaze, "I can't expel him. I can force him to do housework. I can restrict him from leaving the dorms. I can ensure that he only works with you on rare occasions, but I can't expel him. And, unfortunately, neither can Nezu. That power has been taken away from him by the Hero Commission. You're well aware that UA's reputation has taken a hit, you're well aware that since All Might's fall villain activity has been rapidly increasing. The Commission won't expel students from any hero course in the country unless they have done something drastic, like purposeful murder. We can punish and educate him, but the decision to expel him is no longer in our hands."
Kyoka and Momo sat there in complete and utter shock. It was ludicrous. It was like they could never win, even if Aizawa had wanted to expel Mineta, he couldn't, all because of the idiotic Hero Safety Commission. An organisation whose priorities laid less in safety, and seemingly more in the direction of traumatising students and maintaining their own personal interests.
"I really am sorry," Aizawa said as gently as he could. That's to say, his voice was rough and he looked pained.
Momo nodded numbly. What else could she expect? What did women's safety matter when the entire countries system was at war with itself? It didn't matter what she said, what any of them said, nothing is going to change.
