CHAPTER 19

"CAPTAIN, WE NEED YOU DOWN HERE."

When Steve made it to the detention section, where Loki previously was locked in a cage, staff stood in the doorway, hesitant to go inside. Everyone parted to let him through, to see what had happened.

In the middle of the room, Jacqueline laid there, unmoving. Surrounding her was a layer of ice on the metal ground. Steve went to take a step before Fury stopped him. He tossed his gun onto the ice and it froze immediately.

"We can't examine her wound until she calms down, Captain." Fury told him.

Steve took a step into the room, where the ice hadn't reached, "Jacq, it's me, Steve. Doll, we need you to calm down, we need to check to see if you're okay."

Her fingers twitched and Steve knew she was listening, "Everything's fine. Phil's okay." He lied, "Everyone is okay. We just need to make sure you're not badly injured. I need my best girl."

The ice began to melt and Steve walked closer, "Good job, Jacq. You're doing it. I told you, you could control it."

Once it was completely gone, medical had immediately rushed towards Agent Coulson and Fury followed. Steve ran to Jacq and brushed back her hair, "Just open your eyes now, doll."

Her eyelids fluttered open and her hazel eyes immediately connected with his blue ones that held a twinge of green, "It's really you." She whispered,

"Of course." He responded, helping her sit up, "Are you okay?"

Jacqueline brought a hand to her head, "I think so."

"Agent Coulson is down." They both turned to see Fury standing above his body,

"Paramedics are on their way." Someone responded over the earpieces,

"They're here." Fury replied, "They called it."

Tears fell down her cheeks and they immediately froze on her skin. She should've helped him, should've acted sooner,

"Hey," She looked back up at Steve who wiped the frozen teardrops away, "Just breathe. You need to stay in control."

"I should've helped more." Jacqueline whispered, "I was weak."

"You aren't weak. Sometimes there are casualties." Steve replied,

"We aren't soldiers." Jacq stared into his eyes,

"No but we are at war." Steve responded.

Once all Coulson's body was remove and Fury had left he room, Steve helped Jacqueline up. He had an arm wrapped around her waist as they headed back towards the briefing room, where they met up with Ana and Tony.

Natasha was with Clint, who was captured and apparently rehabilitated after being hit in the head really hard.

Everyone was in a daze. Bruce and Thor were missing, and they lost one of their own.

Steve kept an arm around her and Jacqueline was grateful. That arm kept her grounded, kept her from loosing control.

"These were in Phil Coulson's jacket. Guess he never did get you to sign them." Fury threw Coulson's Captain America Trading Cards on the table towards Steve. Steve unwrapped his arm  from around her and picked the bloodstained cards up,

"We're dead in the air up here. Our communications, location of the cube, Banner, Thor. I got nothing for you. Lost my one good eye. Maybe I had that coming." Fury sighed, "Yes, we were going to build an arsenal with the Tesseract. I never put all my chips on that number though, because I was playing something even riskier. There was an idea, Stark knows this, called The Avenger Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea, in heroes."

After Fury's attempt at a motivational speech, Tony got up and walked off, clearly not wanting to hear it anymore. "Well, it's an old-fashioned notion." Fury stated.

Ana stood and looked down at Steve, "I'll talk to him. You watch over her."
