CHAPTER 10
IT WAS FIVE A.M. WHEN STEVE'S ALARM WENT OFF. He sat up and made the noise stop. Steve turned to look at Jaqueline who groaned into the pillow, "Why... would you ever set an alarm for this early in the morning?"
Steve smirked and sat up in the bed, "That's because I like to go for runs in the morning."
She opened her eyes to give him a small glare, "Please tell me I don't have to go, too."
"Sorry, Jackie. Rules are rules." Steve stood and put on a t-shirt, "You have to train with me if you are going to keep going outside SHIELD facilities."
Jacqueline let out a long groan before Steve walked over to her side of the bed. He lifted the smaller girl over his shoulder, "No! Steveeee!" She protested, too tired to put up a fight.
He placed her feet on the ground, "Get ready. We're going in ten." He told her before walking into the kitchen.
Jacq stuck her tongue out after him before sighing. She walked over to her drawer and grabbed a pair of running shorts and a t-shirt before changing.
The two went to a park and Steve had her do sit-ups, push-ups, and crunches before going for a run.
"I don't understand... why..." Jacqueline panted after running back to Steve's apartment, "I have to run... if I have to train at SHIELD in a few hours."
Steve tossed her a bottle of water from the fridge, "Think of it was a warm-up. Plus it wakes you up."
Jacq rolled her eyes and took a sip, "A warm-up for a super soldier." She walked towards the bathroom, "Feels like I can sleep for a week."
She quickly took a shower before grabbing her bag. She hopped on the back of Steve's motorcycle and they headed towards the Triskelion.
When they arrived at the Triskelion, everyone seemed to stare at Jacqueline. As if they were just waiting for her to break. For the whole world to turn to ice.
Steve noticed how nervous she was and grabbed her hand. Jacq gave him a small smile before they continued to the training rooms.
"Jacqueline Braden, please report to laboratory one. I repeat, Jaqueline Braden, please report to laboratory one." Someone said over the loudspeaker.
Steve and Jacqueline looked at each other, confused, before going to the lab. Inside, there sat a large pool of water with machines around it. There were a few scientists looking at clipboards and Fury stood talking to one of them,
"What is this?" Steve asked,
Fury walked over, "Her powers had to have come from somewhere." He stated,
"But I don't remember." Jacqueline stated,
"Which is exactly why we set this up." Fury replied, motioning to the pool,
"Is it safe?" She asked,
"For the most part, yes." He answered,
"Fury, I don't think-" Steve started but Jacqueline put her hand on his arm to stop him,
"I'll do it." She stated,
Steve turned towards her, "Are you sure? Jacq... you can't control your powers yet." He said,
"I'll have my bracelets on, Steve. Besides, I want to know."
He sighed and nodded, "Let's get her suited up." Fury stated and Jacq was led towards the pool,
"The water is set at 5 degrees celsius." One of the scientists stated,
"Isn't that going to kill her?" Steve asked,
"In order to enter her subconscious, we need to lower her already lowered core temperature and pulse. There she will enter a comatose state and will need to be led towards the answer we seek." He responded,
"As long as she stays calm while under, everything will be okay." A female scientist stated.
Jacqueline stripped to her sports bra and underwear. The female scientist attached wires and such to her temples along with her arms, the top of her chest, and her stomach, "These are to keep an eye on your vital signs." Jacqueline nodded and stood at the top of the stairs, ready to get into the pool of near-freezing water.
"Anything I have to do?" Jacq asked, looking at the SHIELD scientists,
"Just... don't fight it." The male stated, "You may enter the bath."
Jacqueline gave Steve one last nervous smile before stepping inside and laying back until the water covered her completely.
Steve watched nervously as she slowly went into a comatose state. She didn't move, just laid there. She almost looked dead.
The beeping from the machines slowed and the male scientist nodded at Fury.
"Jacqueline, I need you to think." Fury stepped forward, "When did this change happen? How did this happen?"
A small girl laughed and played in the snow in the backyard, her parents watching her. They smiled lovingly at their six-year-old daughter, who was making a snowman.
"Honey, I'm gonna make some hot chocolate then you have to come inside, okay?" Her mother called out from the porch,
"Okay, mommy!" The little girl continued to make her snowman while her mother went inside. Her father stayed to watch over her, to make sure she didn't get in trouble.
A crash came from the kitchen and the man turned, "Char? You okay?" He went inside to check on his wife, leaving his daughter alone.
A lightning bug flew in front of the small girl, "Pretty." She gasped, dropping her large snowball. She followed the bright insect into the woods that was behind the house.
The little girl went deep into the woods until she came into a clearing where more lightning bugs lit up the air.
She twirled and danced and played with the little living stars buzzing around her.
But what she should have been paying attention to was underneath her. Cracks appeared in the ice below her feet. A bright blue flash appeared in the clouds and the girl gasped.
The thin ice collapsed and the little girl fell through. She let out a small scream before her head went under the water.
That's when her parents noticed she wasn't in the yard. They yelled her name before following the footprints into the woods.
Steve, Fury, and the scientists watched as Jacqueline began to panic under the water. It began to freeze and Steve ran over to the tank but was held back by security, "If you touch the water you could freeze yourself." The male scientist stated,
Steve broke free and he grabbed the edge of the tank, "Jacq? Jacqueline, I need you to listen to my voice." His knuckles turned white as he gripped the glass, "I know you're scared right now, but everything going on in your head right now is just that. It's in your head. If you open your eyes, it'll be over."
The ice began to melt. He reached into the water and nothing happened. Steve gently grabbed Jacqueline's wrist and pulled her out. Jacq gasped air back into her lungs and opened her chocolate brown eyes.
"I'm sorry." She whimpered and Steve wrapped his arms around her, trying to warm her up,
"You have nothing to be sorry about." Steve told her as he was handed a towel and wrapped her in it,
"Did you see it?" Fury asked, "What turned you into this?"
Jacqueline nodded, "I saw all of it."
