CHAPTER 07

"YOU'RE A FREAK! MONSTER!"

Jacqueline sat on the medical counter, staring off into space while the doctor examined her. Steve stood in the doorway, in case she tried to bolt, "Can I go see him?"

Steve looked up at her, his arms crossed over his chest, "Probably not the best idea."

She sat up straighter and winced at the movement in her ribs, "But I want to fix this. I have to fix this."

The blond shook his head and slowly walked over, "I don't think there is anything that you can do, Jacq. I think we just need to train you on how to control this. That is how you can fix this."

"That's not the only problem here!" She exclaimed and the doctor poked her back, where a bruise was from the fighting match that occurred only an hour ago. Jacqueline hissed in pain and gripped the leather under her.

It began to frost over, then the ice came. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees and the doctor back away with caution.

"Jacqueline, where are your bracelets?" Steve asked, approaching her,

She lifted her wrists, showing him that she was wearing them. The doctor pressed a button from underneath the table and an alarm went off.

In fear, Jacqueline ran out of the room, freezing Steve's feet to the ground in the process. She sprinted down the hallway, avoiding guards and people after her. The young woman panted, leaning against the wall in an empty hallway.

She heard multiple pairs of footsteps coming towards her and Jacq slipped into the nearest room. She backed away, listening as the footsteps passed before bumping into something.

Jacqueline turned around, seeing Agent Barron in a hospital bed. He was hooked up to a monitor and his frozen arm was kept in an incubator. To Jacq, it looked like the ice was spreading.

"I'm sorry." She whispered, running her fingers over the railing of the hospital bed, "I'll fix this." Jacqueline walked over to the door and froze it shut in order to not be interrupted, "I promise."

She gently removed his arm from the incubator and ran her fingers over it, "I'm not a monster." the ice began to melt and Jacqueline smiled, "I'm not a freak. I'm me." She held his healed arm in her hands, feeling relieved. Maybe she can help. Maybe she doesn't just destroy.

The sound of a gun firing caused Jacqueline to tense. She felt a slight tinge of pain, like a flu shot, and looked down. Red stained her white work out tank top and she felt herself grow cold.

Jacqueline gripped onto the bed railing as she slid onto the ground, holding her stomach, where the red was coming from.

She heard yelling and punching coming from outside the room, and a few more shots firing off. Jacq winced each time, thinking they were supposed to end her life.

Cracks began appearing in the ice, as the sound of a fist making contact with it made Jacqueline flinch even more. She began to feel light headed. It this what her mother felt, Mark felt, during the last moments of their life?

The final punch was landed to the ice and it shattered, leaving a panicked Steve Rogers in its wake with unconscious soldiers behind him, "Jacq!"

"Steve?" She gasped in confusion as he rushed over to her and checked her wound,

"You're going to be fine. It doesn't look like it hit anything. Just flesh." He told her, stroking her hair in order to calm her down, or maybe it was to calm himself.

"I just wanted to fix things." The younger woman mumbled, looking over at Agent Barron, "I don't want to be a monster."

"You're not, Jacqueline. You're not a monster, you never were." Steve replied,

The adrenaline began to wear off and Jacqueline felt the pain in her abdomen as the stain spread, "Steve, I'm scared. Why'd they shoot me? I just wanted to help."

"And you did help. You did so well." He smiled sadly down at her, "Just hold on, alright? Help's on the way, Jacq. You're going to be fine."

"Don't leave me."

"Never."
